swirl around Lear as the storm does on

the heath- where we find the heart of

the play and the soul of the King as

mirrored by his Fool. SSF is grateful

and fortunate to have at the heart of our

play an accomplished and soulful ac-

tor, Gerard Moses, a Professor Emeri-

tus at Syracuse University. Gerard last

performed Lear at the astonishingly

young age of 29 for the Champlain

Shakespeare Festival. His obviously

more mature portrayal of the character

will bring our audiences a richness,

compassion and insight of astounding

depth and complexity. Do not miss

this stunning and stellar performance.

by James Bruno,

Producing Artistic Director, SSF

An old man wishes to retire.

He has three daughters and will

divide his possessions among

them. Each daughter is asked to

tell him how much she loves

him. The elder daughters flatter

him, and are rewarded; the

youngest speaks the truth, and is

disowned.

From these familiar family fairy

-tale beginnings, Shakespeare

crafted perhaps the most har-

rowing tragedy of world litera-

ture. The characters are written

in vivid, primary colors; the

loyal Kent, exiled by his master,

returns in disguise to serve him

as a yeoman; the treacherous,

charismatic Edmund arranges

his brother’s ruin and his fa-

ther’s arrest; virtuous Cordelia

invades Britain to rescue her

father from her wicked sisters.

Liberty of Low Expectations Comes to the Newly

Named Nancy Cantor Warehouse Theatre in January

An Extraordinary Ode to the Ordinary

Shakespeare’s characters and situations exist at the extremes of human experience. When we are made privy to

the thoughts of Hamlet or Lady Macbeth, Beatrice or Malvolio, we react to stimuli that, for the most part,

is foreign to our everyday lives. (continued on p. 3, Liberty)

ED’s Musings… by Ronnie Bell

As we continue to move SSF forward we are always trying

made for our 2015 season to be chosen in December…

(Liberty, continued from P. 1)

If you were to give the people around you a dollop of eloquence and pay

attention to them for five minutes, what kind of a soliloquy would they

deliver? The question intrigued and tickled me for years, leading me to

write monologues in blank verse from a video game addict, an embittered

math teacher and a slacker living in his mother’s basement among others.

My hope is to present a wide view of ordinary human experience, with

humor, compassion, and honesty. We have a great cast performing these

works, with the Underground Poetry Spot and I Am Fool joining us to

make the fundraiser a really special event.
