6PM to eat and 7 PM for the Gathering Jimmy’s Family Restaurant

1018 By Pass 123, Seneca, South Carolina 29678

Hi, Family,

We’ve got things to do this month…

Chapter Picnic, Sat 9/14, 5PM at Swain’s

Region A Convention in Eufala, AL,

NC District Convention in Concord, NC

Picnic lunch ride with John Moore on Monday, September 16th,

Saturday lunch ride with Gary on September 7th (notice we’ve changed the date for this month), leaving at 10 AM

Plaque Attack Saturday, September 28 in Aiken. Eat at noon.

Weekly dinner rides on Friday nights, leaving Belk’s promptly at 6:30 PM for a location to be determined.

Gary Brinson has offered to lead a regular monthly lunch ride on the 2nd Satur-

day of each month until further notice. You know he’s a rain or shine kind of

guy, unless it’s pouring rain at leave time. We’ll start at Belk’s each time, and

the leave time will be sent by email and announced at the Gathering.

The District picnic will be in October on the 5th.

If you didn’t already know, the Capmans are back and we’re so lucky to have

such fun people return. I gather winter interferes with riding and they were able

to take care of the responsibilities for their parents. Grandkids are not too far

away to spend time with, either!

Please help us with ride ideas and with other kinds of activities we might enjoy. I

would really LOVE to have pictures for our newsletter… It’s so boring with only

text! Surely there are some of us who love to take pictures. I admit your Chapter

Director is not one of them! Help me out here, folks. I would like to receive them

any old time you can get them to me and I’ll put them in the next newsletter. I

do try to get this to you around the first of the month.

Ride Safe, Ride Often and have FUN!

Motorist Awareness

The Motorist Awareness Division and Rider Education Program, through a Team effort, are com-

mitted to a goal of establishing the safest motorcycling environment possible. While Rider Education

trains and educates motorcycle riders, the Motorist Awareness Division (MAD) will focus on educat-

ing the motorist community. Our primary goal in motorist awareness will be to reduce the number

of motorcycle crashes with other highway users, a reduction in the loss of life, and a reduction in in-

juries.

A New Era in Motorist Awareness—A Simple Plan…

The Motorist Awareness Division of GWRRA, through a “Share the Road” campaign will pursue

three aspects of motorist awareness. Each of these three are supportive of each other:

Awareness Education — Providing motorists with First Class, professional education through our

certified seminar presentations. Our presentations will be developed for a multitude of audi-

ences, educating them to a better understanding of motorcyclists, the risks involved, a heightened

awareness of motorcycle presence and what they as motorists can do in the prevention of

crashes.

“Drive Aware!”

Awareness Advertisement — Serves as a reminder to motorists that they share the road with mo-

torcycles. Reinforced reminder to the education aspect.

Public Relations—Interaction with the motoring public has the ability to reflect highly on

GWRRA and to mold public opinion on how they view motorcyclists.

Our goal in this area is to build a rapport with motorists and leave them with a feeling that motorcy-

clist are real people who could be their friend, neighbor, or even a relative.

The Motorists Awareness Division ha already begun working with the motorcycle Safety Foundation

(MSF) and other organizations within the motorcycling community. Communications and the shar-

ing of information between us and these organizations helps build our programs, sets the stage for

success and benefits the entire motorcycling community.

SC Chapter “I”

Motorist Awareness Coordinator

I have handouts of all kinds for Motorist Awareness, including bumper stickers and re-

flective warning stickers for helmet removal available for the asking.

Back to Riding FINALLY! Serious withdrawal was setting in….

The Chapter picnic is at the Swain’s on the 14th at 5 PM. They will provide a

Low Country boil (corn on the cob, potatoes, sausage, and shrimp), tea and

water. Terry will need a head count, so she can be sure they have enough.

We will need to bring desserts. Call her at 864-972-3324 or email

[email protected] ASAP, please.

The region Wandering Plaque goes to Eufala, AL, to find it’s permanent

home, and the new plaque will come back to Chapter J in Myrtle Beach to be

put up for grabs on October 12th...details to follow.

We are still looking for sponsors for our chapter newsletter. You do not have

to be an officer to get sponsors. Sponsors (1 year) will receive a business card

ad for $25, a half page ad for $50, or a full page ad for $100. We will include

the web site information if they have one.

Please support our sponsors and TELL them you saw their ad in

the newsletter! They will appreciate it, and so will we.

Bring Can Tables, lotions, shampoos, etc. in trial sizes to any Chapter

Motorist Awareness Seminar

Mike O’Harrow has offered to come up and give Motorist Awareness Semi-

nars any time to help those who need them for the next step in the Levels

program…. Or, for those who just want to see what’s up with Motorist

Awareness.

We will most likely him up on that in October or November, depending on

scheduling. Chapter F also has some participants who want the class. We

will, of course, notify anyone else who would like to come.

Keep an eye peeled in the newsletters and emails coming your way for fur-

ther details.

We are going to try something a little different with the “during the week ride” this month and

see how everyone likes it.

WHAT: PICNIC RIDE

WHEN: SEPTEMBER 16, 2013

WHERE: BELKS AT 10 AM

DESTINATION: CEASER’S HEAD STATE PARK

We will take the trailer and bring drinks, cups, plates and ice. Even though we will try to bring a variety of drinks, it would be nice to know who thinks they might be able to go and their preference of beverage. Each rider or couple can bring sandwiches, chips and whatever for a light, simple picnic. The park has picnic tables and rest rooms. Depending on the time and the way we return, we might possibly stop somewhere on the

way home for a meal if everyone is hungry by that time

Our lunch ride with Gary this month is on the FIRST Saturday, so as not to conflict with the Chapter picnic at the Swains on the second Saturday.

We will leave at 10 AM, planning to be pretty much all day. Next month, we will be back to the second Saturday. Gary’s rides are always fun and through beautiful scenery. Folks say they want to ride with him, so now’s your chance!

He has also been finding scenic ways to get to the plaque attacks, so ride with us if you don’t want to travel the main roads all the time. We’ve had pretty dreary riding weather this summer, but maybe it’s ready to get better… :)

All-Around Leaders (as it appeared in Wingin’ It)

By: Phillip & Terri Kozlowski, Chapter Director, GA –D

As a Chapter Director, the monthly Gathering is a very busy day for us. We are doing last minute things to make the Gathering successful, confirming items or answering questions of TEAM Members; we want to say hello to each Member and visitor that comes to the Gather-ing...we are busy! However, there is one item we must immediately at-tend to and that is a new GWRRA Member or potential Member visit-ing our Chapter for the first time. This visitor is very important to GWRRA and to your Chapter...a future Officer! They need to feel welcomed, special, have questions answered and to know that they matter to GWRRA and to your Chapter.

We understand that we all have times when we do not want to be social or we just want to be with our friends because we haven’t seen them in a while, but as a GWRRA Mem-ber, especially an Officer, you need to be proactive when it comes to first time visitors. Have a plan in place on how your Chapter will handle a first time visitor...be prepared for more than one at a time. Have a Welcome Packet prepared for them. As a Chapter Director, we need to greet them but we cannot spend the entire time with them as we have other duties to take care of...so have a few friendly Members sit with the visi-tor...never let them sit alone.

These trusted Chapter Members need to let the guest know what the Chapter does for FUN...where the Chapter has ridden...answer questions about the Welcome Packet..why are people buying ticket (only if they ask)...why they choose to participate...why they love GWRRA. They need to get to know the visitor...what kind of bike do they have...where do they live...ask about their family. If you get the visitor to personally con-nect to more than one Member, you will more likely get them to return. Note about the Welcome Packet: This packet is a quick way to be sure you get the information you want from - and to - the visitor. It has an information form they fill out and give to you so you have all their contact information, family members, birthdays, anniversary, what they ride, etc. It has information about the Rider Ed Levels Program along with the Level 1 application for them to fill out and if they are a Member, you can present them with the Level 1 patches that day and make them feel special! There is also the emergency medi-cal information form for them to fill out at their leisure and to put on their bike in the left side console unlocked case, so if we need it the information is there. This shows the guest that you already care about them and their safety. You can also put in the chap-ter Handbook that they can read later about the Chapter and how it functions.

Note about Ticket Sales: Please note that I said you tell them why people are buying tickets and only if they ask; but I did not say to sell them tickets. They are a guest...a first time visitor...treat them like one and do not ask them for money. Now if they ask and you explain what the ticket sales are for (it is how the Chapter gets its operating funds) and they ask if they can buy tickets, that is different, and, of course, they can buy them...you just should not ask them to spend money on their first visit.

So, after the really FUN and informative Gathering is completed, it is time for the Chap-ter Director to again go and visit with the guest. Thank them for visiting with the group, ask what they enjoyed about the Gathering, and ask them to attend an upcoming ride. This does not mean that other Members should not introduce themselves and thank them for visiting.

Remember, the more personal connections that can be made with the new Member, the more likely they will return. If they are not a Member of GWRRA, this is also the best time to ask them to consider joining as you hand the a membership application and let them know they can do it online or you would be happy to send it in for them.

None of the things listed here are difficult to do but you do need to have a plan of action and to be prepared for your first time visitor. This first tie visit is the most important op-portunity the Chapter has to add a new Chapter participant to all the FUN you are hav-ing. Don’t lose them and don’t let them sit alone.

Hi, Family,

We’ve been running around like a bunch of wild animals this month. (Pun in-

tended...don’t you wish you could be a tiger, too??)

Friday night dinners had 9 participants the first week, 5 went to visit Chapter A the

second week while Mike E and I went to Seneca Family Restaurant, third week saw 7 go

to the Coach House and forth week saw 8 back at the Coach House for more good times.

Our Saturday lunch ride with Gary had 5 go to Little Switzerland on a cloudy day. This

was an adventure, since the Parkway was closed in a different location than advertised,

so we had an unexpected change in route. Mike E said she’s much more confident on

steep, wet roads with loose gravel than she was before! The fear factor has been re-

duced… and a yellow 1800 pulling a camper trailer made the ride over that road, too.

(Maxine had a couple of hot flashes on this road, but the manual fan switch worked won-

derfully well.)

The Triathlon wound up with 7 bikes, including 2 from Chapter I-2, since we were short

from our own chapter. Isn’t it great that we will help one another? This is a major fund

raiser for our chapter, and we do need commitments ahead of time to meet our obliga-

tions. Art and Lucy will be able to go next time. You know Art’s having withdrawal symp-

toms from having to stay off the bike for so long after the surgery!

You can print the last 2 pages (chapter locations and our calendar) and hang them on

the refrigerator for a quick visual… There are articles about the planned rides (with de-

tails) scattered throughout the newsletter. The calendar shows you which pages to look at

for a particular article...or just read everything!

Lou Achille said to please be very conscious of overloading your tires. His brother-in-law

just had a major accident on his Harley caused by an over loaded back tire. We want

everyone to arrive safely every where they go, every time they go!!!

‘Til next time….

Ride often and ride safe!

Tippy (Didn’t know tigers could write, did you? We’re sneaky that way…..and we’re

WAY better spellers than cows. Just sayin’.)

DID YOU KNOW?

DISPLAY ON MOTORCYCLES

When the US Flag is flown alone, it needs to be at the center on the back of the motorcycle, or

to its ‘marching right.’ The ‘marching right’ is o the right side of the motorcycle to the rider’s

perspective when facing forward. If the US Flag is on your bike with another, it should be to

its ‘marching right.’ All flags flown with the US Flag are the same size and at the same height

of the US Flag. While the US Flag is on your bike with several othe flags, the US Flag is placed

at the cente and highest. Other flags should be arranged in alphabetical order and in dereasing

importance—Nations first, states (in order of admittance) and territories second, military third

(in order of establishment), and then any others.

Purpose of the Rider Education Program (REP)

The GWRRA Rider Education Program (REP) is intended to make the motorcycle environment

safer by reduing injuries and fatalities and increasing motorcyclist skills and awareness. The

REP does not propose to have all of the answers. However, our close working relationship

with the Motorcycle safety Foundation (MSF), as well as additional GWRRA programs and

stuies, has provided a wealth of information for use in establishing a comprehensive Rider

Education Program. Through commitment, Education, and Application, we can reduce our ac-

cident rate significantly. Listed below are several benefits of a fully implemented GWRRA

Rider Education Program at the Chapter level:

Increased rider knowledge

Increased rider safety skills

Prevention of accidents

Reduced Injuries

Reduced fatalities

Improved general public image of motorcycles

Enhanced enjoyment of motorcycle riding

The motorcycle community is already realizing many positive benefits from the GWRRA Rider Education Program. Through the efforts of the Rider Education Officers and participa-tion of the membership and others, we will reach our goal of establishing the safest motorcycle environment possible.

Member Opinion Survey

Most members have an opinion about many things relative to every organization in which they participate. They would like things to remain just as they are, or would like things to change to the way they used to be, or would like things to change to something new. Given the chance, most members never express their true feelings. Recent surveys at the GWRRA national level, get a response from less than 10% of the people asked for a response.

It is your choice whether or not to respond, but keep in mind that we cannot consider your thoughts if we never hear or read them. This is being sent via email to each chapter CD and can be processed as a chapter response or individual responses. If done as a chapter, we ask that it not be edited by anyone to only submit ideas liked by other members. Please submit all comments.

Reply to [email protected]. or 2319 Tickle Hill Road, Camden, SC 29020 or hand it to us.

We know that we cannot implement all ideas, but they will all be considered relative to the good of all GWRRA mem-bers.
