Dear Oatlands Families,

It is remarkable to think of how much has changed since I sat here writing the newsletter last fortnight.

I recognise that during these uncertain times it is natural to be concerned and I hope that you and your families are all well.

I would like to thank everybody for being so supportive of the school. Our teachers and staff are working exceptionally hard to make sure everybody is safe. Many teachers have commented about how kind our community have been!

Please know that if you do choose to isolate, teachers will not be able to provide the normal schedule of work to be completed. Teachers are already teaching face-to-face each day, as well as performing additional duties to keep students and the wider community safe.

We do respect the decisions you make for your families and I know many teachers have already sent work home. Please know that they are doing this outside their normal duties. We really do have amazing teachers and staff.

Our office staff are also working incredibly hard to make sure we have supplies as is our cleaner. I am extremely grateful for all the work they do!

Thank you again for all of your support. We appreciate all of your kind words and feedback. It means a lot to us.

Stay safe, Miss Gould Principal

Term 1 Week 8

Impact of natural disasters on mental health: Part 1

Natural disasters can be stressful and traumatic for children, young people and adults, with impacts on mental health and wellbeing.

Natural disasters can affect our usual coping strategies

Natural disasters, such as floods, earthquakes, fires or cyclones, can be frightening events.

Being involved in or witnessing such events can result in a sense of loss of control or feeling overwhelmed, especially for children and young people who are dependent on adults for their safety. As a result, individuals may have difficulty coping during these times of stress.

Coping strategies are actions that we take to help us manage difficult emotions and deal with challenging events. These can be either healthy (improving the way we feel and managing our emotions) or unhealthy (actions which are detrimental to our mental or physical health in the short or long-term).

Natural disasters can be traumatic

Trauma is a psychological or emotional response to an event or an experience that’s deeply distressing or disturbing.

Trauma experiences may impact on biological, psychological and social aspects of wellbeing.

Grief is an emotional reaction to a loss or change.

Grief can be experienced in varying forms and is not just related to the death of a person. Grief can be associated with loss of many things, including but not limited to, home, change in environments, routines and way of life.

The Emerging Minds Community Trauma Toolkit contains resources to help and support children, young people and adults before, during and after a disaster or traumatic event.

OATLANDS COVID-19 RESPONSE - OVERVIEW

Below is an overview of some key strategies we will all continue to implement: * Regularly washing hands. All work spaces have been provided with additional soap and sanitiser and we are carefully monitoring soap supplies. We have demonstrated how to wash hands correctly for 20 seconds at a time. * Ensuring nobody is at school if they are sick. * Keeping all workspaces/desks clear at the end of the day for optimum cleaning. All classrooms have been provided with cleaning supplies. * Using and promoting correct sneezing and coughing etiquette and reminding students. This includes putting tissues straight in the bin after use.* Ensuring there is ventilation in all workspaces by opening windows. We are also using outdoor spaces when possible and spacing out desks and lines. *Cancelling or postponing any events that require students or people to gather in close proximity. * Avoiding handshakes, high fives, holding hands or hugs (the 4 H's)
