NEW AdULT LEARNINGOPPORTUNITy WITH RABBI COHEN!Judaism, Reform, and Modern America: A Study of History,

Jewish Text, Practice, and the Reform MovementSaturday afternoons from 3:20 PM to 5:00 PM

in the Hartzmark CenterIn this weekly adult learning series, we will examine foundational Jewishnotions of time, calendar, ritual, and Jewish values as they are anchoredin biblical and rabbinic texts. We will also consider the implications ofthese notions to our religious identities and contemporary sensibilities. Our series will include a sequence of four units on specific calendricaltopics. Our first and introductory topic will touch on the calendar in general, its calculation, observance, and sources; the second – on the unfolding of events and textual evidence that are associated with ourHanukkah celebration; the third – on our reading of parts of the Estherscroll, its interpretations, and the evolving meaning of Purim; and thefourth – on our understanding of the story of Ruth and its implications forour understandings of Jewish belonging and identity. Our study of eachof these topics will include opportunities for both interfaith discussion andthe exploration of key Hebrew terms. A small set of secondary sourceswill be made available to participants to supplement each unit upon re-quest. Throughout this year-long series (corresponding to the LearningCenter annual schedule), we will develop and discuss both the contribu-tion and legacy of Reform Judaism to our religious identities as well as thelegacy of our Temple and its leaders. All are welcome!

FROM THE RABBI’S STUdySPECTACLE OR SUBSTANCE: THOUGHTS ON THE 2020 ELECTION

In a recent Friday evening d’var Torah I reflected on a fascinating passage in Chapter 13 of the biblicalbook of deuteronomy. The passage goes like this:

If there appears among you a prophet or a dream-diviner and he gives you a sign or a portent, saying,”Let us follow and worship another god” – whom you have not experienced — even if the sign or por-tent that he named to you comes true, do not heed the words of that prophet or that dream-diviner.For the Lord your God is testing you to see whether you really love the Lord your God with all yourheart and soul. Follow none but Him; observe His commandments alone …”

What is the test to which the author refers? Simply, whether our decision about whom to follow is based on substance, the content of belief and conviction, or spectacle, that which titillates, that which appeals to our eyes and ears. Whoare the “other gods” to which the author alludes? These are the powers that we see and feel all around us … the sun,the source of light and warmth and growth; the fertile earth that gives rise to the ripened crops and the fruit-burstingtrees; the thunder and lightning that make us tremble at the awesome, fearsome power of nature. These natural forceshave often, from time-immemorial, become objects of worship. These are powers that we see and hear and feel; theyarouse our senses and persuade us of their significance. Thinking of them as divine, as gods, is but a small step forthose so inclined.

The Bible rails against this very seductive form of idolatry, an idolatry that makes gods out of material entities. The Bible’smonotheism, on the other hand, insists that nothing material is divine and that which appeals only to our senses canlead us astray. What is the Bible’s alternative? In a word, the G-d of Ethical Monotheism. The G-d who stands forvalues, who points us to ethical imperatives, whose concern is the substance of life and its shadows. To worship a tran-scendent G-d is to turn from sights and sounds to what is substantial and to obligation, from captivating stagery to deepvalues and goals.

This passage has something to teach us about the challenges and opportunities that the current (and interminable!) election season presents to us. For, in our media-saturated age, spectacle is what mesmerizes and spectacle is what we get in abundance. A candidate who beguiles captures our attention and holds it. Sights and sounds, sensationalizedbarbs, seductive promises … these are calculated to lift a candidate above the crowd. And these are tactics that all too often work.

But, our country now faces enormous challenges: income inequality, climate change, unresponsive government, sagginginfrastructure, corrosive racism, a corroding educational system, inadequate health coverage. during this season, wecannot afford to be diverted from the necessary agenda by those who seek to captivate and entertain. We must insistthat our candidates deal in substance and offer real solutions to the many problems we as a society face.

SHABBAT MORNING TORAH STUdy WITH RABBI KLEINSaturdays, October 5, 12, 19 & 26 at 9:15AM

PARSHA AND POETRYThis year we return to a study of the Torah Portion of the week. There are 54 Torah portions in the Humash (The Torah, The Five Books of Moses, The Pentateuch), one for each week of the year. The Torah as a whole featuresa wide variety of genres: story, law, ritual, genealogy, poetry, instruction, lament and more. In addition, there areseveral master themes that weave their way through the Torah as a whole. We will begin each session with a briefreading and discussion of a biblical psalm. This means that over the many months of weekly Torah study, we willcover almost a third of the Psalter’s 150 psalms. After a consideration of the psalm, we will take up the Torah portionfor that week. Since the new cycle (starting with the Creation Story at the beginning of Genesis) does not commencethis year until October 26, we will have plenty of time for an overview of the Bible: its formation; its structure, contents and high points; its many uses throughout our history; its “demand” for interpretation and for personal response from the reader. And then we will explore the final portions of The Book of deuteronomy.

Bagels and coffee are served. Open to long-time participants and newcomers alike. All are welcome!

THE TEMPLE LEARNING CENTERA Message from Jamie Collins, Youth Director

There are a few quips and phrases that make me cringe, like hearing nails on a chalkboard. One ofthem is the standard answer to the age-old question “Why are we doing things this way?” which isoften, “Because that’s how it’s always been done.”

In my opinion, that expression is a cop-out answer for when we’re too lazy or too scared to comeup with a real response. When the only reason you’re still doing things is “because that’s how it’s always been done,” it’s probably time for a change.

I honor our youth group’s past and history and acknowledge that, for many years, it worked well forour congregation. Before radically changing things, I asked myself, “Am I willing to accept how it currently is? Or am Iwilling and able to challenge the status quo?”

Let me back up.

When I started as the director of youth engagement in April 2016, I inherited a small group of passionate and engagedteens. The programming was great; and the teens involved loved it. Nonetheless, I felt – I just knew – that our templeand these teens were capable of something more.

I wanted to innovate and co-create a way to reimagine teen engagement and programs with our teens. To do so, I neededto best understand what they wanted and needed from our synagogue and greater Jewish community.

So I spent the next two years figuring it out. I implemented small pilot programs, talked to teens, explored nontraditionalmodels of youth engagement, and considered when and how we could best innovate.

In time, I came to understand that our traditional temple youth group was creating a barrier to entry for many of ourtemple teens. Many teens are excited to be involved in temple and teen programs, but less so in "youth group.”In meeting the needs of only a small group of our teens, the system in place wasn’t working. I wondered how I couldfix that, so, alongside my teens and colleagues, I worked to reimagine teen engagement without barriers.

In March, I saw all of our efforts come to fruition. Our “youth group” teens wanted to have a “shul-in” (temple sleepover)the night before our Purim carnival. Instead of calling it the TEFTy Shul-In, we instead just marketed it a Temple TeenShul-In – and saw participation increase by 50%, just by changing the name. We couldn’t believe how this small changemade such an impact! I knew we were onto something.

Even with the little sleep they got the night before, the energy from the teens was unlike anything I had seen. Our teensfelt so much ownership over the Purim Carnival. It was theirs. This is their temple; these are their experiences.

After that success, my mind was whirring: How can we create a program inspired by their wants and needs? How canwe create a temple community that works for and supports them? What kind of program will offer opportunities forlearning, leadership, growth, and fun?

After a handful of meaningful conversations with other youth directors, a short post in The Tent (a collaborative onlineworkspace for Reform Jewish lay and professional congregational leaders), and a conversation with our youth grouppresident, we got to work innovating, creating, and changing the way we did things.

Why, for example, do we need a six-person youth group board when there’s so much more leadership potential outthere? The disruptive and innovative answer is: We don’t. We can change, evolve, and fix things that aren’t working aswell as they could be – and after seeing so much potential and energy amongst our teen community, we wanted tocreate a new model to match.

We created the Teen Leadership Committee, breaking down our six board positions into small, task-based committeesthat work together to enhance teen programming and engagement in a variety of ways. Now, for example, instead ofone teen overseeing all programming, a group of teens shares the work. A handful of teens has taken ownership of ourregularly scheduled programs, including Monday Madness, Hump day Hangout, and regional and sub-regional eventswith NFTy-NEL. We now have 28 teens collaborating and owning teen engagement at temple!

As a youth director, I’m charged with guiding our teens and youth programs to succeed. To be successful, we must question everything, never allowing the mindset of “the way it has always been” to stand in our way.

We are looking for parents to drive kids from The Temple to events. If interested, or for questions, contact Jamie Collins, Director of Youth Engagement at [email protected].

Our Temple kids, your children and grandchildren, are going forth, like Abraham and Sarah,in search of the promise that is to be theirs. Keeping in touch with them while they are awayis a priority for The Temple. Maintaining a connection makes a difference in their lives. It’simportant because they are in search mode, their identity is evolving and they’re open todifferent ideas. This link provides a touchstone for them to connect with the clergy, staffand the congregation.

Everyone loves to receive packages and cards! Several times a year we send something to remind them that they are missed and that they are in our thoughts when they are away! If wehave their addresses, they will receive High Holy day greetings; holiday care packages; and special emailsand notes from the clergy and staff. We have heard from students over the years about how much these packages meanto them and motivate them to do something Jewish even while away from home.

We depend on YOU to help keep the lines of communication open. Please help us remind them that The Temple remains a vital and important part of their lives wherever they go! Simply email your child’s contact information [email protected] or complete the online form at bit.ly/ttticollegeconnect and we’ll do the rest!

Feel free to call me at 216.455.1707 or email [email protected] if you have any questions.

ART TALKSTHE SHAPE OF

COLORby Bonnie dolin

dear Friends,

One of the lesser-known aspects of the history of our Jewish communities relates to the hallmarks of their founding. What turns a cluster of Jewish families into a community? How would Jewish families collaborate to form communityand create the potential for continuity in a new location? Part of the answer to these questions lies in the history of theJewish cemetery. Throughout this country, and especially during the 19th and 20th centuries, the first effort engaged byJewish families in a new location was the securing of a site for Jewish burial and remembrance. These efforts most oftenpreceded the creation of houses of worship, schools, and other communal institutions. Cleveland was no exception tothis trend. Securing Jewish burial and the memory of loved ones was core to the founding of our city’s Jewish community. To this day, our cemeteries are the sacred grounds of memory, history, rootedness, and inspiration.

Among the various ways Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple and The Temple-Tifereth Israel collaborate and share, our ownership and management of the Mayfield Cemetery is of particular significance and meaning. We together bring kavod (“respect/honor”) to the memory and remains of our deceased, at a time when families are in need, andoften through pre-planning that members of our synagogues arrange so as to ease the burden of surviving relatives and loved ones. Pat Corrigan at Mayfield Cemetery is prepared to help you consider the benefits of arranging to utilize thebeautiful garden-style Mayfield Cemetery or mausoleum, located at 2749 Mayfield Road in Cleveland Heights. Pleasedo be in touch with him.

yet we are writing to you now not only to encourage your consideration of burial at our Mayfield Cemetery, but also tocall to your attention that Mayfield Cemetery was constructed and founded by our synagogues in the 19th century. Soeach year, although our institutions operate in an extremely efficient manner, additional funds are needed to supportthe Mayfield Cemetery, to help supplement the cost of operating and keeping up with the challenges of ongoing care.Would you be willing to make a financial donation to our Mayfield Cemetery annual fund?

Typically, this invitation to help with the Mayfield Cemetery annual campaign would come in a separate mailing. However, we wanted to alert all our members to the unique value of the cemetery. your involvement, if at all possible, would make a significant difference at this time. Please know that you would be performing a special mitzvah: in additionto various forms of kindness we express and bring to friends and relatives when they are bereaved, we are able to contribute to a cause that our congregations deemed highly important starting at the time each of our communities was founded. The Mayfield Cemetery will always be sacred to us, a site of shared history, identity, and legacy, as wellas personal and familial memories.

In this season of fresh starts and remembrance, please consider a special contribution to the Mayfield Cemetery annual fund.
