May 3, 2020 Fourth Sunday of Easter 3

FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK: FATHER PAUL CAODear

Parishioners of St. Mother Theodore Guerin;

I am sure you have missed going

to church since we were ordered to stay at home on March 15. Last week, Governor J.B. Pritzker’s extension of the mandatory stay–at–home order through May 30, while difficult, is a necessary step in protecting the common good and well being of all in Illinois. Bishop Hicks, our Vicar General from the Archdiocese, announced last Friday that we will continue following the guidelines to remain at home. We invite parishioners to our broadcast/livestreamed Masses through our Facebook page or website. Cardinal Cupich has asked his COVID–19 Task Force to begin creating a strategy for the eventual re–opening of our parishes, schools and agencies. They will do so in coordination with civil authorities and health care experts to determine how we might safely and prudently re–open our churches to attend to the sacramental life of our parishioners in a gradual way. Bishop Hicks will keep us informed and asks for our patience.

I ask you to continue to pray and trust in God during this difficult time and to do your best to keep healthy and safe by following the recommended guidelines. During this Easter Season, we may know that the Risen Christ is always with us and gives us the hope, trust and peace that He did to his apostles when he appeared to them. I am sure Jesus is accompanying us during this time helping us to get through this crisis.

During the month of May, we

consecrate ourselves to our Blessed Mother Mary who always trusted in God’s will—and was very close to her Son, Jesus Christ. Let us learn from her to always submit ourselves to the will of God and pray that she might help us to be closer to her son Jesus Christ. I am sure that when we ask her to intercede for us, our prayers will be answered.

The President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop José Gomez, invited us to participate in a National Day of Prayer on May 1, asking Our Lady’s protection and aid in this crisis. Cardinal Cupich and our auxiliary bishops encourage all the faithful to mark this day with prayer, seeking Our Lady's intercession during this difficult time.

In response to Archbishop Gomez and Cardinal Cupich, we offered a Holy Hour on May 1 with a rosary through Facebook Live. We set aside time to be with God and our Blessed Mother and asked that God watch over our loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to us.

Recently Pope Francis sent his Letter for the Month of May, addressed to all the Faithful throughout the world.“The month of May is approaching, a time when the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is traditional in this month to pray the Rosary at home within the family. The restrictions of the pandemic have made us come to appreciate all the more this ‘family’ aspect, also from a spiritual point of view.”

In his letter, he called on Catholics everywhere to “rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May.

“This can be done either as a group or individually; you can decide according to your own situations, making the most of both opportunities. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on the internet to find good models of prayers to follow.”

Pope Francis added that answering this call and “contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial.

“I keep all of you in my prayers, especially those suffering most greatly, and I ask you, please, to pray for me. I thank you, and with great affection I send you my blessing.”

Pope Francis himself composed this prayer that can be recited after the Rosary, saying that he "will pray in the month of May, in spiritual union with all of you.”

Prayer from Our Holy Father Pope Francis

“We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God.”

In the present tragic situation, when the whole world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protection.

Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes towards us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with

hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment.

Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the victims be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust.Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health.

Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fidelity to the Gospel, are trying to help and support everyone.

Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scientific research, that they may find effective solutions to overcome

this virus.

Support national leaders, that with wisdom, solicitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessities of life and may devise social and economic solutions inspired by farsightedness and solidarity.

Mary Most Holy, stir our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Beloved Mother, help us realize that we are all members of one great family and to recognize the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need. Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer.

Mary, Consolation of the afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all–powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can

serenely resume its normal course.

To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.

Please join us through Facebook live today (Sunday) after the 10:30 AM Mass for May Crowning in honor of our Blessed Virgin Mother. Let us respond to our Holy Father Pope Francis to pray the rosary in our family and ask our Blessed Mother to help us end this pandemic soon.

Thank you for your continued financial support to our parish. With your generosity, we have collected almost 70% of our regular Sunday Collections. I appreciate very much all sacrifices to help keep our parish running smoothly. I am looking forward to seeing all of you back in church soon. Please be assured of my prayers for you and your loved ones during this difficult time.

May God and our Blessed Mother bless you and your family and grant you peace and good health!

In prayer,Fr. Paul

SUNDAY READINGS May 3, 2020 Fourth Sunday of Easter

Reading 1 Acts 2:14a, 36–41

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed: “Let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they asked Peter and the other apostles, “What are we to do, my brothers?” Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call.” He testified with many other arguments, and was exhorting them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand persons were added that day.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 23: 1–3a, 3b–4, 5, 6R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.or: R. Alleluia.

Reading 2 1 Pt 2:20b–25

Beloved: If you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good, this is a grace before God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps.

He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.

When he was insulted, he returned no insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten; instead, he handed himself over to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you had gone astray like sheep, but you have now returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

Gospel Jn 10:1–10

Jesus said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber. But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice. But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.” Although Jesus used this figure of speech, the Pharisees did not realize what he was trying to tell them.

So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”

SAINTS PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES

May 3

IN NEED OF A SHEPHERD

For a while it was very fashionable to own pigs as pets. The publicity surrounding these creatures

Call Philip the gospel’s “Answer Man.” “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathaniel asked Philip, who had proclaimed Jesus “the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets” (John 1:45). Jesus asked Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” (John 6:5). Greeks brought Philip their request: “We would like to see Jesus” (John 12:21). Philip’s answer to each question: bring people to Jesus!

At the Last Supper, finally, Philip had a request of his own: “Show us the Father!” (John 14:8). Jesus had three last questions for Philip: “You still don’t know me? How can you ask that? Don’t you believe?” And an answer: “I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (John 14:10). Today’s James is not John’s brother, Zebedee’s son, but, tradition says, author of the New Testament Letter of James, who died praying for his

murderers in Jesus’ words: “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Few historical details for either saint, but lessons aplenty: Bring every question we have and everybody we meet to Jesus; be, as James’ letter challenges, “doers of the word and not hearers only” (James 1:22).

Peter Scagnelli, © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

informed us that they were—contrary to their popular image—very clean animals, and also quite smart. Sad to say, sheep will most likely never enjoy this sort of domestic vogue. They are neither clean nor smart and are largely defenseless when left on their own, even in large numbers. The biblical image of us as the flock of sheep is not a particularly flattering one. Sheep without a shepherd are truly sad, because they most likely will perish either from their inability to fend for themselves or from their lack of defenses against predators. Placing ourselves in the heart of this unflattering image can reinforce our faith. Until we come to a profound realization of how much we need a shepherd, we cannot appreciate how deeply blessed we are to have been given a Shepherd, one who laid down his life for us and was raised to life eternal in the Spirit, so he might guide us and we might follow him in faith forever.

ON BEING STILL, AND KNOWING WHO’S WHOMay 3, 2020 Fourth Sunday of Easter 8

Before retiring, I worked with a guy named Larry. He had a calmness about him that spoke

to me, but I can’t recall if it was during a workplace crisis or during our occasional travel together––when conversations run deeper––that I realized he was

a man of faith. Whichever, I learned at the right time of Larry’s involvement with a local Christian church, and he learned of my Catholicism. We sometimes spoke of faith, reminding me that I was bemused at a Christian writers’ conference years prior when a

non–Catholic Christian author told me that I shouldn’t submit any of my work to non–Catholic Christian publishers. Huh? In contrast, Larry seemed to get that we are all on the same team.

Which is probably why I began sending him my Easter column years ago. In keeping with this tradition even though I’m now several months gone from the workplace, I sent him this year’s Easter piece a few days before the Great Sunday. Referring to the world we are all living in these days, I opened my email to Larry with “I trust all is well. Strange days…”

Not long after, I got an email back from Larry: “As always, thanks for thinking of me. Hope you and Gail are doing well and staying safe during these uncertain times. Psalm 46:10 was our sermon a few weeks ago which was so appropriate for the days we are in: ‘Be Still, and Know that I am God.’”

I recognized the words, and my head and heart agreed at once that the message rings especially true during these Covid–19 days. But fast–forward two weeks. I’m sitting where I am now––at my

writing station here at home––when something prompts me to tackle the (long) cluttered in/out box on my desk. I find there old checkbook registers, old receipts, and a hidden treasure that I forgot I had. I don’t know how the polished, engraved wooden box holding a wood–grain pen came to be in my possession. I didn’t buy it for myself, but a gift, perhaps? A church raffle win? Either way, the inscription on the box was immediately familiar. Psalm 46:10. “Be Still, and Know that I am God.”

So...is someone trying to tell me something? Coronavirus news everywhere. Curves flattening. Death tolls still rising. Angry protests to open up the country. Or not. I’m taking all of this very seriously. I’m essentially homebound these days, venturing out only for a morning run, an occasional food–drop to family and friends, and groceries. And even then, I’m there early. I wear a mask. I keep my distance. Just the same, I am anxious.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus positions himself as the Good Shepherd, “…and the sheep hear his voice, as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” Remember Elijah on the mountain and not finding God in the elements, but only in a whisper? I guess we have to be quiet in all of the coronavirus noise to hear such a voice. Ah… Just as Larry’s email message and my lost pen advise. Perhaps now more than ever, true that… “Be Still, and Know that I am God.”
