The future is uncertain, will school classes resume, will we have fall suppers, seniors’ suppers, Christmas teas/sales/celebrations? What about Remembrance Day, Santa Day, etc.? Many of us are missing the contacts with family and friends, especially if they live away from our community. We miss the handshakes, the hugs, the visits, face to face contacts. However, this pandemic has yielded some positive results: more quality family time, seeing people out walking, riding bikes, walking the dog, going for a drive, enjoying the outdoors. New activities became popular gardening, card/board games, jig-saw puzzles, crafts, family movie nights, reading, cooking, baking bread. More time to relax (not rushing off to events). Working from home (sweatpants and PJs outfits of choice). Housecleaning, sorting that closet/drawer. Starting a fitness routine. Volunteering to help a senior or shut-in. Virtually connecting with friends from afar. When our “new normal” returns, let’s hope we don’t forget - and that we continue - the “positives” of this pandemic as well as remembering the “negatives”.

HOW HAS COVID-19 CHANGED YOUR LIFE – AND WHAT ARE YOU MISSING THE MOST ?

The August long weekend is upon us, and if 2020 was a normal year, Wawota residents and others would be enjoying the Heritage Days in the valley. However COVID-19 put a stop to the plans for this year.

And this event was just one of many our community has had to cancel or change. You may have noticed that the “What’s Happening – When & Where” feature in News-in-Five has been absent for many months.

Once the virus “snuck into” in our country, the government and health agencies had to mandate many restrictions, closing facilities, businesses, events, etc. to try to limit the spread of Covid-19 and try to keep our population safe. Rules/restrictions were implemented (handwashing, sanitizing, self distancing, masks, quarantining, etc.)

Upon checking our files from past years, these are some of the events that had to be cancelled since March: CWL St. Pat’s Stew Lunch; Sledge Hockey Tourney; 4-H Beef Club Steak Night Fundraiser; Lions’ NHL Hockey Draft; Lions’ Fish Fry; Wildlife Federation Annual Awards Night, Supper & Auction; Volunteer Appreciation Tea at DVL; Wawota Museum’s Spring Tea & Bake Sale; Friday High Teas, School Tours & Kids’ Activities at the Museum; Kid’s Activities at the Library; Sportsman Dinner; Kids’ Baseball/Softball/Soccer; Fairmede Fair and Church Service; Annual Town-wide Garage Sale; Minor Ball Day; Lion’s Annual Farmers’ Golf Tourney; 4-H Achievement days/ show/sales – and we are sure we have missed some.

School classes were cancelled and teachers and parents had to work together to home school their children (some with success, some not so much). The 2020 Grad Class could not be honoured the usual way, but were able to modify their plans with great success. Church services were cancelled and when this restriction was lifted, modifications implemented, i.e. staggered services, distancing, sanitizing, zoom worship services. Deer View Lodge and Maryfield Villa were closed to visitors. Activities at the Drop In were cancelled. Doctors/Dentists were using phone consults. Businesses were closed, special appointments were implemented as well as service at the door, take-out, etc. Events like Anniversaries, Weddings, Birthdays, Family Reunions were cancelled or creatively/safely celebrated.

New activities became popular – gardening, card/board games, jig-saw puzzles, crafts, family movie nights, reading, cooking, baking bread.

WANDERING THOUGHTS (as we see them)

Sneaky or what? We were certain that the RTR group had a policy – what happens in the berry patch stays in the berry patch! Anyway the “pail on the head” (yes it was empty – the pail we mean), did keep the curly locks dry but didn’t do much for the rest of the body. And by the way, from now on, any camera equipment – phones, etc. will stay at the gate upon arrival to be picked up on departure!

And since the word is out, seven “not-to-give-in” pickers returned to the patch on Tuesday A.M. – even though the fog made seeing “guessable” at times.

Enroute, a decision was unanimous (we thought) to only get another 10 pails, bringing our total to 20 pails as was the original plan! Fast forwarding, at 9:38 a.m. we had picked 24 pails – and at 11:10 a.m. our saskatoon inventory read 35 bags – plus 8 from last year in the freezer!

Another week with the weatherman (whoops) weatherperson, keeping us in suspense of hat to expect/what might happen.

The amounts of rain came in varying measurements. In a neighbouring town, one side received ½” and the other over 1” – and one farmer reports damaging hail while his neighbour received none – maybe Mother Nature’s version of the “new normal”.

On our weekly paper route, we see the folks trying to do the reclamation of the pipeline property right of way pumping water in hopes of drying up the area. Their finish-up project may take longer than planned.

The forecast for the upcoming week is for drier conditions for the pipeliners – and farmers struggling to do haying.

Each day on our travels, we see an increasing number of bales appearing some with the white plastic wrap. Recall the first time we saw these a few years back near Kamnay, MB – thought they looked like oversize marshmallows!

Eye catcher of the week are the planters on the boulevard on the 200 block of Main Street – and how about the tomato plants in the Town pots at Bigway Foods – if they get any bigger, folks will be using them for shade! Stay safe – and continue to use common sense. Re-opening does not mean the virus has gone away. What’s that sound we hear? Oh, guess it’s only the lawn mower reminding us it’s time again to have our bi-weekly date! (15 times to date!)

You asked ??

Question: Why are we not seeing Town council meeting minutes in News-in-Five any more? Answer: Scoop-on-Patrol took this concern to the Administrator who told us that this had been discussed and would be brought up at the next council meeting – stay tuned.

Q: What is a mosquito’s favourite sport? Q: Why did the mosquito go to the dentist? A: Skin diving. A: To improve his bite.

Q: Why are mosquitoes religious? Mommy Mosquito: How was your first day of flying? A: They prey on you. Baby Mosquito: It was great, everybody was clapping for me.

RED MARKET BARN REPORT A recent development in the Covid-19 pandemic in the immediate area would probably account for the slightly small attendance at the Market on Sunday.

However, an interesting group of vendors (some usuals and a few new ones) were present offering a variety of wares/products to choose from.

The entertainment was Ruthless (members from Moosomin, Broadview and Melville) replacing Boomtown.

Barn Boss #2 was seriously seeking help from anyone to do all his extra jobs – sanitizing tables, checking bathrooms and more – not sure if he had approval of BB #1 – questionable??

at Farm & Auto Supply, Wawota.

As soon as a farmer’s crop starts coming up good in the field, it starts going down on the market.

HINT: Fridge Facts: Never slam the refrigerator door – slamming loosens joints and operating parts. To assure food freshness, cover everything in the fridge, except raw meat and eggs. Don’t pack shelves too tightly – perfect refrigeration depends on free circulation of air inside the compartment. Always wipe up spilled food immediately – prevents corrosion.

VISITORS AT THE WAWOTA MUSEUM This year is the 40th Anniversary of the Wawota & District Museum and the committee had hoped to have some special events to celebrate the milestone, however Covid-19 ended that.

The Museum is however open for two days a week – Thursday & Friday from 2 – 4 p.m. – or by special appointment, with all restrictions/rules adhered to.

On Wednesday of last week, three gentlemen from Regina were given a tour. Bruce Mc, Ron W, and Bruce H, drove out to Grenfell then cycled down #1 to Moosomin, Rocanville, Esterhazy, had planned to go to Redvers but due to lack of available accommodation there, diverted to #48 to take in Fairlight and Wawota.

They spent two nights in our Town, then headed to Kipling. They also visited Kenosee and the Park.

They were extremely taken with the Museum and offered many great comments to the tour guides and local residents on what they saw. They spent about two hours in the Museum and toured all four buildings, checking out each and every display area.

They also commented on how neat and tidy our Town was – and how friendly and accommodating residents were. Take a bow Wawota – take a bow!

THANK YOU … - To Jim & Ellen Cairns (Langbank) for their donation to News-in-Five.

I sprayed a mosquito with mosquito repellent and now he’ll never have any friends.

Why? Oh why, didn’t Noah swat those two mosquitoes?

YOU KNOW YOU’RE GETTING OLDER …

• When everything hurts, and what doesn’t hurt doesn’t work.

• When the gleam in your eyes is from the sun hitting your bifocals.

• When you feel like the night before, and you haven’t been anywhere.

• When you get winded playing chess.

• When your children begin to look middle-aged.

• When you finally reach the top of the ladder, and you find it leaning against the wrong wall.

• When you join a health club and don’t go.

• When you decide to procrastinate but never get around to it.

• When your mind makes contracts your body can’t meet.

• When a dripping faucet causes uncontrollable bladder urge.

• When you look forward to a dull evening.

• When you walk with your head held high trying to get used to your bifocals.

• When you turn out the light for economic rather than romantic reasons.

• When you sit in a rocking chair and can’t get it going.

• When your knees buckle but your belt won’t.

• When you stop looking forward to your next birthday.

• When after painting the town red, you have to take a long rest before applying a second coat.

• When you start talking to yourself and have to say “Speak up – I can’t hear you”.

• When you are cleaning your teeth and your hearing aid falls out and disappears down the drain.

• When you know all the answers, but nobody asks you the questions.

• When you are 17 around the neck, 44 around the waist, and 105 around the golf course.

We’re Back – And Happy To Be - (new normal English!) After having played music on over 200 dates in Care Homes and Seniors’ Complexes in 2019, we (Keith O. and I) had no reason to believe that 2020 would be any different! From January 1 – March 15 had us doing 34 visits with even taking a little time out for surgery and recuperation.

From March 16th to May 26th, not a note was played – 15 cancellations courtesy of Covid-19 – 73 days of “lay-off”. A sudden stoppage in a regular routine takes some adjusting – but, we got through it.

Getting back was almost like attending family reunions – they seemed happy to see us once again and we were more than pleased to be able to once again bring them some entertainment.

One dear old gentleman from a Care Home came up to us after our performance – immediately a care-giver informed him that he had to ‘social distance’. His reply “I always shake their hands when they’re done”. After explaining that things have changed, he said, “Okay, but I want to give them a little money for gas – seeing their faces and hearing their music all outdoors, is just like getting out of jail!”

Doing outdoor entertaining has its “oddities” (besides the music). A recent day at Newhope Lodge in Stoughton, saw us competing with severely strong winds; a few days later at Westman Home in Virden, we were located beneath a three-tiered martin apartment – fully occupied! Other than a lot of squawking, they were very well mannered – no autographs left on our equipment!

Yep, it’s good to be back – pretty much back to normal with 16 dates for July!

REMEMBER …

Small businesses are suffering big time in the wake of COVID 19.

Now is the time to support your local businesses. Take out/eat at your local restaurant. Get your hair done at your local beauty shop. Buy your groceries from your local food stores. Choose a small business as often as you can. Walmart and Costco will survive. Take your money to people who truly need it to survive. Shop small, shop independent and keep the local economy going.

Heh – looks like you might have something to cheer about this year after all, even if it is an abbreviated se (sic)

Hear that Toronto and Edmonton have been selected as the hub cities for the NHL – can’t see how playing/living out of the “bubble” won’t have problems – wait and see, we guess!

And Winnipeg “snuffed out” Regina for the CFL shortened schedule – and again we wonder at the fairness of the decision since Regina was to be the site of the 2020 Grey Cup??

If the Riders have to change their name to “keep up with the Jones’” wonder if the Sask Prairie Dogs could be considered – look out – here comes the Wildlife Federation!

Okay – how about the Sask “Queensmen – oh no, how we have to deal with Royalty.

We give up – you try!
