FOLKMOOT AT LAKE JUNALUSKA

July 20, 2018 | Issue 8

THIS WEEK

On July 20 and 29, individuals from around the world will perform traditional songs and dances in Stuart Auditorium for Folkmoot’s opening and closing ceremonies.

On July 20 and 29, Folkmoot will bring the world to Stuart Auditorium for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 10-day international festival.

Folkmoot is an international folk festival featuring dancers and musicians from around the world who come to Haywood County for two weeks each summer. The festival serves as a celebration of each culture’s heritage expressed through traditional song and dance.

Folkmoot has held events at Lake Junaluska since the organization’s very first year of performances in 1984.

This year, the performances in Stuart Auditorium—and throughout the festival—will represent Ghana, Canadian-Italy, Mexico, Venezuela, the Czech Republic, Northern Cyprus, the Eastern Band of Cherokee and more.

“Lake Junaluska is a beautiful location and has always been a friend of Folkmoot,” said Folkmoot Executive Director Angie Schwab. “As an organization that celebrates diversity, we appreciate the fact that the conference center is welcoming to all people and also hosts the Interfaith Peace Conference, which reflects our shared values.”

During the festival, international groups will perform throughout the Western North Carolina area, host camps for children, participate in parades and engage in cultural conversation. The events draw both locals and visitors.

Tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies are between $21 and $31, depending on seat selection. Reserve your tickets at folkmoot.org or 828-452-2997. Lodging is available through Lake Junaluska.

With two of the summer’s five Summer Youth Events coming up July 20 through 27, expect to see many young people on the Lake Junaluska grounds as they build community and strengthen their faith in a safe and loving environment.

Of particular interest to the larger Lake Junaluska community—youth from Summer Youth Event III will join the community at the Summer Worship Series in Stuart Auditorium on July 22. Some of the youth will even join the Lake Junaluska Singers in leading the worship music.

“The youth this summer are learning about what it means to gather as a community of followers of Christ,” said Mitzi Johnson, Lake Junaluska director of programming. “By joining Summer Worship, the youth can live as a larger church together with the broader community.”

Participating in Summer Worship is just one aspect of the newly revitalized youth program’s goal to form broader connections between the youth and the Lake Junaluska community.

A large part of this goal has been the use of workshops, such as gardening, drama, crafts and spiritual disciplines. Not only do the workshops give youth more diverse options to connect with their faith, but they also allow them to see more of the Lake Junaluska grounds.

Summer Youth Event IV also has a special entertainment activity. Christian Illusionist Matt Adams will use the power of illusion to illuminate scripture.

Both events will continue on with the summer’s “Get on the Boat” theme, based on Matthew 8:23.

Summer Youth Event III will take place July 20 through 23, and Event IV will take place July 23 through 27.

SUMMER STAFF PROFILE: CHRIS VAN DER KAMP SEES THE WORLDFor Lake Junaluska youth ministry intern Chris van der Kamp, the choice to move all the way from his home in the Netherlands to attend seminary at the Boston University School of Theology was an easy one.

He and his wife, Catherine, had promised to follow each other wherever life may take them, and, in 2016, when she received a fellowship to conduct research at Boston University, Chris went with her.

After two years of seminary and with only one semester remaining, Chris still needed hands-on experience hours. On the advice of several acquaintances who had experienced transformation at Lake Junaluska as youth, he decided to apply for the youth ministry intern position.

Chris said Lake Junaluska has lived up to its reputation—and so much more.

“I was really humbled that I could become part of this,” Chris said. “People have prayed a lot in the past to have a place where people can just be touched by the gospel, and the lake became that place.”

With a soft-spoken voice, calm demeanor and a deep desire to learn about the world, Chris is always trying to expand his knowledge.

Through experience and education, he has developed a method to connect with the youth he works with this summer.

Upon first meeting his small “family” group for the week, he looks each

young person in the eyes and tells them: “You are a beloved child of God.”

“You first start with creating a connection,” Chris said. “When you have established a connection, you can then pour out the gospel. That is always the second layer. Never the first.”

Chris van der Kamp works to catalogue books in the SEJ Heritage Center in between Summer Youth Events.

THIS WEEK (CONTINUED)

Normally associated with farmland and not with beauty, Lake Junaluska gardeners cultivate several cotton plants on the Lake Junaluska grounds.

Many might find it surprising that cotton plants are actually beautiful throughout the entire summer. After time to mature, they bloom with creamy white flowers that gradually turn pink over several days. The petals then fall off and leave behind a seed pod, which eventually bursts open revealing the fluffy white fiber within.

Cotton is particular about planting location, requiring a long growing season and temperatures above 60 F.

For more information, contact Roddy Ray, Lake Junaluska grounds and landscape manager, at [email protected].

GROUP PROFILE: PAKISTAN REUNION FELLOWSHIPJuly 26 through 30, the Pakistan Reunion Fellowship will host the 2018 Pakistan Reunion at Lake Junaluska.

The attendees will include many current and former missionaries to Pakistan, missionary kids who grew up in Pakistan, as well as individuals who worked in Pakistan with companies, organizations or schools.

“Folks who grew up in Pakistan, especially during times when communications were difficult, often felt isolated from their own extended families,” said organizer Tom Brown. “Our community within Pakistan

became its own extended family.”

The organization is faith-based, and attendees will use the gathering to celebrate and reflect on the heritage of faith and service that was lived out in the lives of so many people.

HISTORICAL MOMENTS:

ELEANOR ROOSEVELTLake Junaluska has a long history of well-known visitors, but it is possible that none are as fondly remembered as First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. It was exactly 74 years ago this week that Roosevelt spent two days at Lake Junaluska.

From July 25 to 26, 1944, Roosevelt enjoyed the beauty and community at Lake Junaluska. She spoke to the Woman’s Club, took a boat ride on the lake, spoke at Stuart Auditorium, interviewed at a local radio station and attended a breakfast hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. Afterward, she wrote fondly of the experience in a newspaper column entitled “My Day.”

Historical Moments is provided by Bill Lowry and Nancy Watkins. For more information, visit the SEJ Heritage Center.
