Ê Jepsen (No. 40) begins his second stint with the Rays…in 2015, he went 2-5 with a 2.81 ERA (41.2-IP, 13-ER) in 46 games before a July 31 trade sent him to Minnesota…he owns a career 3.83 ERA over nine big league seasons, and pitched in 33 games for the Twins this year. RAY MATTER—The Rays open the second “half” of the season with a brief 3-game homestand against the Orioles, before embarking on a 9-game road trip to Denver (3 games), Oakland (4 games) and Los Angeles-NL (2 games)…the Rays reached the All-Star break at 34-54 (.386), their worst record and most games under .500 at the break since 2005 (28-61, .315)… this is the first time they’ve been 20 games under .500 at any point in the season since finishing at 66-96 in 2007—their last year as the Devil Rays… it is the second time in the Rays era (since 2008) they reached the break under .500: they were 44-53 at the 2014 All-Star break, then recovered with a 33-32 record in the second half…they are 17.5 GB of first-place Baltimore in the AL East, their most at the break since 2007 (19.0 GB) and most at any point in the season since finishing 2014 at 19.0 GB. 2005 WASN’T SO BAD—As stated above, the Rays 34-54 (.386) mark is their worst record and most games under .500 at the break since 2005 (28- 61, .315)…that season, the Rays went 39-34 (.534) after the All-Star break, a 69.5 pct. improvement—which remains the majors third-best turnaround after the All-Star break since the first game in 1933…only the 1997 Phillies (102.5 pct.) and the 1935 St. Louis Browns (101.5 pct.) had greater improvements. LOOKING AHEAD—Since 2010, the Rays own the 4th-best record in the majors after the All-Star break (see chart)…in the Rays era (since 2008), they’ve had only two losing records after the All-Star break: 2009 (36- 37) and 2015 (34-37)…42 of their remaining 74 games are vs. AL East foes (10 vs. BAL, 10 vs. BOS, 13 vs. NYY, 9 vs. TOR). Ê Only 13 of their remaining 74 games are against teams with current sub-.500 records (3 at COL, 4 at OAK, 3 vs. MIN, 3 vs. SD)…the final 43 games on their schedule are all vs. teams that are currently at .500 or better…the Rays are 24-47 thus far vs. teams with .500-plus records, compared to 10-7 vs. sub-.500 opponents. 22 OF 25—The Rays are 3-22 over their last 25 games, the worst 25-game stretch in club history…it’s the worst 25-game stretch in the majors this year…in the last 13 seasons (2004-16), the only other AL team with a 3-22 (or worse) stretch was the 2014 Texas Rangers, whose 3-22 skid also led immediately into the All-Star break…the Rays were 31-32 prior to this stretch…during this skid (starting June 16): Ê The pitching staff has a 5.99 ERA (215-IP, 143-ER) and the bullpen has a 7.84 ERA (72.1-IP, 63-ER)—both highest in the majors…prior to this, the staff had a 4.03 ERA, the bullpen 3.63. Ê A series win this weekend would count as their first winning homes- tand of the season…the Rays are one of only three teams in baseball without a winning homestand this season, along with the Braves and D-backs…prior to this year, the latest the Rays had gone before their first winning homestand was June 8-13, 2001 (5-1 vs. NYM, PHI). Ê The Rays have a 10-game road losing streak, tied for the 3rd-longest road skid in club history. RAYS vs. ORIOLES—The Rays trail the season series, 7-2, and have lost 5 straight games including a 4-game sweep at Baltimore, June 24-26 in which they were outscored, 31-14…it’s their longest losing streak to Balti- more since April 14–May 8, 2014 (5)…Rays took 2 of 3 games from the O’s in their first visit, April 25-27…only 10 total runs were scored in that series (Rays 6-4)…Rays are 0-6 at Camden Yards this season with a 7.88 ERA. Ê FIRST HALF WRAP—His 12 losses were a club record before the All-Star break (Albie Lopez, 11 in 2001)…became the first pitcher in the majors to lose 12 games before the All-Star break since LAA Joe Blanton in 2013 (2-12)…his 12 losses were the most by a pitcher who was an All-Star the season prior since HOU Jose Lima in 2000 (2-13).

Ê Only three other pitchers in major league history reached the All-Star break with his combination of losses (12) and strike-outs (130)—and all of them occurred in 1973: CAL Nolan Ryan (11-12, 233), CLE Gaylord Perry (8-14, 150) and CWS Wilbur Wood (18-14, 142)…each of those three had at least 199.1 IP.

Ê Archer and LH Drew Smyly became the second pair of team-mates in major league history to both record 100 strikeouts and 10 losses before the All-Star break…they joined RH Clay Kirby (6-11, 126-SO) and RH Steve Arlin (8-11, 115-SO) of the 1972 San Diego Padres.

40-ER) in 10 road starts is the 2nd highest mark in the AL (DET Anibal Sanchez, 7.55)…has yielded a .301 opp avg. and 12 HR on the road.

Ê His only home win came on April 25 vs. BAL…is winless (0-4) over his last 6 home starts (2 ND)…averaging a major-league-worst 1.43 R/9 IP of run support at home (9 runs in 56.2 IP).

Ê 1ST INNING—Has a 9.95 ERA (19-IP, 21-ER) in the 1st inning and a 3.56 ERA (91-IP, 36-ER) after that…his 1st-inning ERA is the 4th highest in the AL (see chart; min. 10 starts)…has averaged 24.3 pitches in the 1st…last year, only yielded 13 ER in 34 starts in the 1st (3.44 ERA)…at home, has a 4.00 ERA (9-IP, 4-ER) in the frame compared to a 15.30 ERA (10-IP, 17-ER) on the road.

Ê In franchise history, the highest 1st-inning ERA (min. 20 starts) ever recorded was Nathan Karns in 2015 (7.96).

Ê THEN vs. NOW—A comparison of this season vs. last season:
