OPENING DAY: WHAT’S IT ALL MEAN?—Of the 16 teams who won on Opening Day last season, 10 went on to finish with a winning record and seven went to the postseason…of the 14 teams who lost their opener, only five had a winning record and only three went to the postseason.…in the 17 years since the Rays have been in existence, World Series champions began their season 0-1 ten times.

FAN SAFETY COMES FIRST—Major League Baseball’s stadium opera-tions practices for the 2015 regular season require each club to develop and implement mandatory metal detection screening of all fans prior to en-try to each major league ballpark…the screening program will be in effect at 29 ballparks on Opening Day and full fan screening will be phased in over the course of the first month of the 2015 season…the Commissioner’s Office has postponed the commencement of the program at Wrigley Field in light of the extensive renovations that are underway…fan screening at Tropicana Field will be conducted by means of hand-held metal detection or walk-through magnetometers…random screenings were performed at Tropicana Field last season in preparation for 2015.

ROAD OPENER—The Rays will play their first road game on Friday at MIA, their fourth game of the season…it is the earliest the Rays have ever played an interleague game…in 2014, they played on April 11 at CIN, in their 11th game of the season…the Rays are 3-14 all-time in their road openers.

SPEAKING OF OPENERS—The Rays will also play in a second opener of sorts in 2015 as the opposition for the Toronto Blue Jays in their home opener on Monday, April 13 at Rogers Centre…it will be the 13th time in club history the Rays have been the visiting team for an opponent’s home opener…the Rays are 2-10 in those games…the last time it occured was in 2012, when the Rays lost 12-2 in the Boston Red Sox home opener…the Rays opened the Blue Jays home schedule in 1999 and lost 7-1.

GRAB AN INSIDE PITCH…YOU’LL NEED IT—The Rays free game pro-gram, Inside Pitch, will be a popular item this season, if nothing else for its roster…10 players who were with the Rays for the season finale in 2014 are no longer in the organization: C Jose Molina, SS Yunel Escobar, C Ryan Hanigan, RH Jeremy Hellickson, OF Matt Joyce, OF Wil Myers, RH Joel Peralta, LH Cesar Ramos, UTL Sean Rodriguez and UTL Ben Zobrist.

RULE CHANGES—In February, MLB announced additions to the sport’s pace of game program and a series of modifications to the instant replay system.

Ê The pace of game program will enforce the batter’s box rule, requir-ing that all batters must keep at least one foot in the batter’s box unless one of a group of exceptions occurs.

Ê A second new component to the pace of game program is the ad-dition of timers that will measure non-game action and break time between innings and pitching changes during each major league game…one timer will be installed on or near the outfield scoreboard, and a smaller timer will be installed on the façade behind home plate near the press box…immediately following the third out of each half-inning, the timer will count down from 2:25 for locally televised games and from 2:45 for nationally televised games.

Ê Pitchers will be permitted to throw as many warm-up pitches as they wish prior to the point when 30 seconds remain on the clock; how-ever, pitchers will be deemed to have forfeited any of their traditional

eight warm-up pitches that they are unable to complete prior to the 30-second deadline…exceptions to these rules will be made in a va-riety of circumstances.

Ê Batters will be encouraged to get into the batter’s box with 20 sec-onds remaining on the timer…this is the same time that the broad-casters return from commercial…the pitcher is expected to begin his motion to deliver the pitch as soon as the batter gets into the batter’s box and becomes alert to the pitcher…batters who do not enter the box prior to five seconds remaining on the timer and pitchers who do not begin the motion to deliver the pitch prior to zero seconds remaining on the timer will be deemed to have violated the break timing rules.

Ê These rules will be enforced through a warning and fine system, with discipline resulting for flagrant violators.

Ê Managers may now invoke instant replay from the dugout and will no longer be required to approach the calling umpire to challenge a call…a decision can be communicated verbally or with a hand signal.

Ê Whether a runner left the base early or properly touched a base on a tag-up play will be reviewable.

Ê A manager will retain his challenge after every call that is over-turned…last year, a manager retained his challenge only after the first overturned call.

Ê A manager must use a challenge in order to review whether a play at home plate included a violation of the rule governing home plate collisions…however, in the event that a manager is out of challenges after the start of the 7th inning, the Crew Chief may still choose to review whether there was a violation of the rule.

58 OPENERS AND COUNTING—MLB.com columnist Hal Bodley is in the Tropicana Field press box today for his 58th consecutive opener…his first was April 18, 1958, a night game at Philadelphia’s Connie Mack Stadium, which the Milwaukee Braves won, 4-2 on a 6th-inning grand slam by SS Johnny Logan…RH Bob Buhl was the winning pitcher…24-year-old CF Hank Aaron went 1-for-4.

NEW EMCEE—Today Bobby Millikin works his first regular season game as in-game emcee at Tropicana Field…he will perform a variety of duties including live reads both pre-game and in-game and hosting contests and live promotions displayed on the scoreboard…see separate press release for bio info…Rusty Kath, who spent the past eight seasons in that role, left the Rays to spend more time with his wife and daughter in Minnesota.

CAN’T MAKE IT? BE SURE TO TUNE IN—Today is the first of 150 Rays games televsied by Sun Sports in 2015 with Dewayne Staats and Brian Anderson in the booth…Staats and pre-, post- and in-game host Todd Kalas have been on the Rays TV broadcast crew since the inaugural 1998 season…this is Anderson’s fifth Rays opener.

NINE HOURS OF TV COVERAGE—Sun Sports has nine continuous hours of coverage planned on Opening Day, starting at 1:00 p.m. …a special 90-minute pregame show will be televised live statewide from Tropicana Field, starting at 1:30 p.m. …Staats, Anderson, Kalas, Rich Hollenberg, Orestes Destrade and new on-air additions Emily Austen and Doug Waechter will all play a role…the full schedule:

Ê With starting pitchers Alex Cobb, Drew Smyly, Matt Moore and Alex Colome all shelved for Opening Day, the Rays are missing four starters with a combined major league record of 86-54 (.614).

RAYS vs. ORIOLES—These two teams play 19 times this season, includ-ing 10 at Tropicana Field…they also play five times in spring training…the Rays face the Orioles on Opening Day for the seventh time…they’re 2-4 so far…all-time, the two teams are 148-148…the Rays were 7-12 in 2014 and were held to 3 runs or less 12 times…their 3.26 runs per game offense vs. the Orioles was their lowest mark since 1998 (3.25)…between 2008-10, the Rays were 36-18 vs. the Orioles…in four seasons since, the two teams are 37-37…Rays were 3-6 at home last season, only the second time in the last seven seasons they have had a losing home record vs. the O’s…Rays are 79-70 all-time at home vs. the Birds.

in Japan)…he is one of only three pitchers in the last 50 years who have Opening Day wins as a starter and reliever, joining DET Mickey Lolich (1965-66-70-71-72 as a starter and 1978 in relief) and CWS LaMarr Hoyt (1981 in relief and 1984 as a starter)…in their history, the Rays have batted .293 (172-for-588) on Opening Day and averaged 5.8 runs per game (98 runs in 17 games) and have never been shut out…only six teams have lon-ger current streaks without being shut out on Opening Day…the Mets have the longest current streak (52 years).

FAMILIAR FOES—Of the Rays first 28 games, 25 are against the four teams from the American League East…half of the Rays 30 games this spring came against the four AL East teams, meaning of their first 58 spring training and regular season games combined, 40 are vs. the AL East.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?—Tampa Bay officially shed the devil from its name and became the Rays on Nov 8, 2007…in seven years since, they have averaged 90 wins per season, advanced to the postseason four times, won two American League East titles and the 2008 AL pennant…in the 10 previ-ous seasons as the Devil Rays, Tampa Bay averaged 97 losses per sea-son…since the first season in 2008, the Rays have:

Ê Won 90-plus games five times, most in the majors during that span…the Red Sox, Yankees, Phillies, Cardinals and Rangers all have four.

Ê Advanced to the postseason four times; only the Cardinals (five) have been to the postseason more often…the Phillies, Tigers, Yan-kees and Dodgers have all been four times.

Ê Allowed only 4,536 runs, fewest by an AL team over a span of seven full seasons since 1974-80, when the Orioles allowed only 4,271 and the Yankees 4,353.

Ê Won six BBWAA awards, more than any other team over that span: Joe Maddon (AL Manager of the Year in 2008 and 2011), David Price (AL Cy Young in 2012), Evan Longoria (AL Rookie of the Year in 2008), Jeremy Hellickson (AL Rookie of the Year in 2011) and Wil Myers (AL Rookie of the Year in 2013).

Ê Thrown 96 shutouts, most by an AL team over a seven-year span since the 1975-81 Yankees, who also had 96.

Ê Started a pitcher under the age of 30 in 93.5 pct. of their games (1,062 of 1,135).

Ê Had six rookie pitchers win 10-plus games, more than any other major league team…the list includes Jake Odorizzi, Jeff Niemann, Matt Moore, David Price, Wade Davis and Jeremy Hellickson.

2015 SPRING TRAINING RUNDOWN15 WINS IN SEVEN OF EIGHT SPRINGS—The Rays went 15-13-2 in the Grapefruit League season, the seventh time in eight years they’ve done won at least 15 games since becoming the “Rays” in 2008…they never did so in 10 springs as the Devil Rays…the Rays began the spring 1-5-1—worst mark in the majors through March 10— but went 14-8-1 after that.

Ê Since becoming the Rays in 2008, the club owns the 3rd-best record in the majors in spring training (see chart)…they’ve won three Grape-fruit League titles in this time (2008, 2010, 2014).

Ê The Rays went 9-5-1 on the road…the pitching staff led the majors with a 2.17 ERA (132.2-IP, 32-ER) on the road—81 points better than any other team (Yankees, 2.98)—and a .215 avg.

PITCHING PROPERLY—The Rays pitching staff recorded a 3.12 ERA (268.2-IP, 93-ER), 2nd best in the majors to St. Louis (3.06)…they yielded only 19 HR in 30 games, 3rd fewest in the majors after St. Louis (12) and Boston (17)…their .242 opp avg. was 3rd lowest in the majors.

ABOUT THE OFFENSE—The Rays hit .238 on the spring, 2nd lowest in the majors ahead of the Phillies (.234)…they hit 29 HR, 27 of which came over the last 23 games—they hit just 2 HR in their first 7 games…LF Des-mond Jennings hit .435 (20-for-46), which would’ve ranked 4th in the ma-jors if he had enough PA to qualify.

OWNING THE RUNNING GAME—Rays pitchers and catchers threw out 12 of 26 attempted base stealers (46.2 pct.)—best rate in the Grapefruit League, and 3rd best in the majors…C Curt Casali threw out 5 of 7, tied for the GL lead in caught stealing…meanwhile, Rays baserunners were suc-cessful in 24 of 28 (85.7 pct.) attempts—2nd-best rate in the majors after Miami (86.7 pct.)…CF Kevin Kiermaier’s 5 SB tied for 7th in the majors.

#16 KEVIN CASH, MANAGER

Ê OPENING DAY ASSIGNMENT—The 26-year-old will be making his first Opening Day start as he makes his second Opening Day roster…this marks the 13th straight season the Rays Opening Day starter has been age 30 or younger…the only Opening Day starter over age 30 in Rays history was 31-year-old Tanyon Sturtze in 2002…since 2008, the Rays have started a pitcher under the age of 30 in 93.5 pct. of their games (1,062 of 1,135)…it will also be the 13th straight opener by a pitcher who broke into the majors with the Rays, dating back to Sturtze.

Ê The past seven Rays openers were started by either James Shields (2008-10, 2012) or David Price (2011, 2013-14); Archer is the first apart from that pair since Scott Kazmir in 2007.

Ê Was named by Manager Kevin Cash as the Opening Day starter on March 26, replacing the previously named Alex Cobb who developed right forearm tendinitis.

Ê Started Opening Day for Triple-A Durham in 2013, earning an 11-2 win at Norfolk (Orioles)…5 IP, 3 H, 1 R/ER, 1-BB, 5-SO.

Ê SPRING THINGS—Went 2-2 with a 1.69 ERA (16-IP, 3-ER) in 5 of-ficial starts this spring…his last outing was a tune-up Thursday at PHI, when he threw 2 scoreless frames on 27 pitches…stretched out to 105 pitches on March 28 against Red Sox minor leaguers at the Charlotte Sports Complex, throwing 6.2 scoreless innings…he also spent 15 min-utes conversing with Commissioner Rob Manfred, who visited Rays camp on March 26.

Ê OFF THE DIAMOND—Chris created the nonprofit Archway Foundation (archwayfoundation.com ) in his hometown of Clayton, N.C., to invest in the lives of youth in the area…more details are available in his Media Guide bio…on Friday, he attended the annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake fun-draiser at Pin Chasers Midtown in Tampa, an event previously handled by David Price, and the event raised $48,000…during spring training, Chris joined the Rays front office and national nonprofit Good Sports in presenting over $4,800 worth of equipment and apparel to the Charlotte High School baseball team.

Ê 2014 HIGHLIGHTS—In his first full major league season, led the Rays staff with 32 starts and 194.2 IP…made 16 starts allowing 1 ER or fewer, tying James Shields’ club record (2011) and tying SEA Felix Hernandez and KC Danny Duffy for the AL lead.

Ê ROUGH START, STRONG FINISH—In 2014, Archer crafted a 2.77 ERA (149.1-IP, 46-ER) over his last 24 starts, starting May 16…pitched to a 5.16 ERA (45.1-IP, 26-ER) in 8 starts before that.

Ê POWER OUTAGE—In 2014, he set a club record and ranked 5th in the AL with a 0.55 HR/9 IP ratio, with only 12 HR in 194.2 IP…half of those 12 HR came in his final 6 starts, after yielding only 6 HR in his first 26 starts…his .336 opp SLG ranked 6th in the AL and 3rd in club history, behind David Price (.318 in 2012) and Cobb (.325 in 2014).

Ê THE MAGIC NUMBER—In 2014, the Rays went 15-8 when he lasted 6 IP or more, and 2-7 when he failed to do so…since the start of 2013, those marks are 27-9 and 4-15.

Ê CH-CH-CHANGES—Spent time this spring working on his changeup, which accounted for just 5.2 pct. of his total pitches in 2014…his fastball and slider accounted for the rest…according to FanGraphs, he aver-aged 94.6 mph on his fastball in 2014, 3rd hardest among AL qualifiers behind KC Yordano Ventura (97.0) and LAA Garrett Richards (96.3).

Ê NO MARGIN FOR ERROR—In 2014, Chris was involved in four 1-0 games, and went 0-2: April 8 at KC (won, no decision), May 23 vs. BOS (won, no decision), June 3 at MIA (lost) and Sep 26 at CLE (lost).

Ê WALK THIS WAY—Allowed 72 walks in 2014, 6th most in the AL…yielded 21 BB in 32.1 IP in the month of May (6.7 BB/9 IP)…apart from that month, averaged only 2.8 BB/9 IP (162.1-IP, 51-BB).

Ê FACING RIGHTIES—Last season righthanders batted .262 (83-for-317) with 7 HR against him…prior to 2014, he’d held them to a .173 (45-for-260) clip.

Ê ONE YEAR DOWN, SEVEN TO GO—One year ago (April 2, 2014), Ar-cher signed an eight-year contract extension, the first six years (2014-19) guaranteed plus club options for 2020 and 2021…the deal guaran-tees a total of $25.5 million with a maximum value of $43.75 million…it remains the largest guarantee in major league history for a player with less than one year of service time, surpassing the deal teammate Evan Longoria signed in 2008 (6 years, $17.5 million).

“When his changeup is right, it’s right along the lines of a Felix Hernandez type of a changeup where this is a swing-and-miss pitch eight times out of 10. What he really needs to clean up, though, is the command of the fastball. Once he learns to command the fastball …

he can be the best of the bunch—even better than David Price was here. And I know that’s saying a lot, but he certainly has those capabilities.

— Pitching Coach Jim Hickey, last August
