That’s how Bill Eakins, MPCC’s area dean of Career Services, feels about bidding farewell to Mid-Plains Community College. Eakins will officially retire Aug. 9 leaving behind 34 years of service and a string of undupli- cated accomplishments. “A lot of people can’t wait to retire,” said Eakins. “I’ve never been that way – probably because of what I do. I enjoy my job. The college has been a good place to work. It’s very family-oriented. I never really thought about retiring until the last year or so, but I just feel the time is right.” Eakins has been in the field of education since 1970. The Paxton native started out as a teacher and coach at Loomis High School in Loomis then taught at Ogallala High School for a year. He served as a career and tech education coordinator at ESU #16 for 10 years before becoming the director of MPCC’s Career Assessment Center in 1985. Under Eakins’ leadership, numerous career exploration programs were developed all with the idea that they could serve any size of school district. INMATE ASSAULTED BY MULTIPLE SUBJECTS An inmate of the Lincoln County Detention Center in North Platte re- ported to staff Tuesday he was assaulted by multiple subjects inside the facility. Deputies began an investigation into the incident and discovered four other inmates entered the cell of the victim inmate and video footage shows the victim inmate being as- saulted. It also showed that personal items were removed by the of- fending inmates from the victim inmate’s cell. Deputies arrested 19 year old Nathan Urbina, 20 year old Chase Lenz-Schurr, 22 year old Terrence Alexander and 22 year old Romello Taylor for Rob- bery- Class II Felony. The case is still under investigation and addi- tional charges may be pending. SPORTS The Nebraska-Kearney track and field team recently quali-fied for team and individual academic honors from the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). In order to qualify for the "All-Academic" team award, a program must have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average. The Loper women ranked 12th nation-ally and third in the MIAA with a 3.54; Central Missouri (3.62) and Southwest Baptist (3.56) were just ahead of UNK. McCook sophomore Tiara Schmidt was among the list of honorees. On the men's side, Kearney (3.13) was one of seven MIAA squads to qualify. The national leaders were California's Point Loma men (3.53) and the Truman State women (3.63). There were 209 team qualifiers (130 women and 79 men) overall. Individually, a student-athlete must carry at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA and have reached provisional or auto-matic qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships in either the 2018-19 indoor or outdoor seasons. The Loper men had four such qualifiers in graduate transfer thrower Zach Brittain (Grand Island), senior thrower Jacob Bartling (Elm Creek), senior vaulter Grant Myers (Cairo) and junior distance runner Corbin Hansen (Deweese) Jahkeem Green is sticking with Nebraska. Green, a junior college standout at Highland (Kansas) Community College, verbally committed to Nebraska in April but took a June official visit to Texas Tech while finishing up summer classes, will indeed attend NU, Highland assistant coach Judd Rem-mers told the Lincoln Journal Star on Wednesday
