Since our formation in 2017 the Light Up Axminster CIC team have been responsible for organising both the annual Cherry Fayre and the Christmas celebration and illuminations switch-on ‘Lighting Up’, as well as a myriad of community events throughout the year.

We are now very pleased to be formally adopted as a Community Interest Company, meaning all of our profits go back into the work we do, for us that means getting Axminster happy and healthy, working together and sparkling!

Our role in the town continues to grow and develop and we are now proud to be part of a number of initiatives that will help Axminster become a special place to live,work and visit.

As always, thank you to all those that continue to support us in all we do.

The Light House

Our creative hub in Victoria Place is starting to bustle with activity, playing host to the ‘Axminster Loves Art’ local artists exhibitions; as a venue for creative groups such as The Sewing Bee and Friend of Arc’s Make and Mend sessions; and as a workshop space for a range of projects and artists. We continue to thank Shane Morgan for the use of the space.

Why is it called The Cherry Fayre ?

Many people are aware that a Royal Charter gives Axminster the right to hold the annual fayre that’s known today as The Cherry Fayre. However, what many folk don’t know is that the town benefits from the blessings of a total of three Royal Charters.

The first was granted in 1204 and incorporates the right to hold a weekly market. The second is the one that makes specific reference to an annual fayre in honour of the Feast of St John the Baptist. There is some debate as to whether this document came into being in 1209 or 1210, we’re just glad it did at all! The third and final Royal Charter was issued just after the signing of the Magna Carta 1215 and reinforced key aspects of the previous two. The original annual fayre brought great prestige and valuable trade to the town with patronage by merchants, traders and dealers of all kinds, some even from Europe, these long-distance travellers particularly prizing the cherries that formed a major part of the fare on offer. Hence the name.

It was more than five hundred years later towards the second half of the 1800’s that The Cherry Fayre began to wane and whilst we can’t with our modern-day reincarnation promise the attendance of the peddlers, quack-doctors, strolling players and acrobats of yesteryear we will be striving, as you’ll see from the Schedule of Events within the programme to provide a whole range of activities that appeal to all.

All of us here at Light Up Axminster CIC look forward to seeing you around and about the town during The Cherry Fayre 2019. If you would like to be involved in the 2020 festival please get in touch.

Lighting Up 2018 Following on from the successful first ‘Lighting Up’ in 2017, last year’s Christmas events moved to South Street which was illuminated for the first time. There was a wonderful carnival atmosphere created by professional circus acts from the Pirates of the Carabina working alongside lantern carriers and musicians supported by Actiontrack Performance Company. There were gifts, food and drinks available at the Christmas Market, where animations were projected onto the wall of Atkins Auctions and a children’s fairground added to the festival-feel of the evening.

Lighting Up 2019 will take place on Saturday 23rd November and will be found in and around Chard Street and Victoria Place. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook, and in the local press nearer the time for more information.

The Raising of the Glove The Minster Green, Thursday 20th June from 8am - 4.30pm

The Raising of the Glove ceremony is a key part of The Cherry Fayre celebrations as both have their roots in the ancient Royal Charter between King John and William Brewer (also known as Briwere), those living at Cloakham and Cherry Tree mayrecognise some of the street names associated with both! The document, accompanied by a glove as a sign of the King’s power and authority, conferred the title of Lord of the Manor upon William and granted Axminster the status of a Free Borough. This provided the right for a market every seven days and an eight day fair to be held each year in celebration of the Feast of Saint John the Baptist.

The tradition continues today with the now Lord of the Manor (a title also held by Catherine of Parr at one time), Jim Rowe, holding aloft the glove and hailing “The glove is up!”. He also makes reference along the lines that no man is to be arrested until the glove is down. The organisers of The Cherry Fayre do not recommend testing this part of Jim’s declaration!

The Heritage Centre will be bringing the town’s history to life throughout the day with guest appearances of some of Axminster’s historical figures. See who you can spot roaming through the market and town centre.

A NEW EXTENDED MUSEUM...Where ‘The Story of Axminster’ and local history are brought to life for all the family. The town has attracted all sorts of craftsmen and women, a foundry, two brush factories, both famous for their toothbrushes. A series of precision engineering companies and the World Famous Axminster Carpets started by Thomas Whitty in 1755. See a beautiful 1769 Whitty carpet. Compare our original 18th century loom with a 1930s Crabtree loom which we occasionally run the (Check our website for dates and times)
