regularly.

Dear Parents and Carers

I hope you had a good week. Things certainly improved towards the end of it. I hope the pleasant weather continues for the half term.

We’ve had a great week in school this week with our Lenten preparations, which included a whole school mass in the sports hall. We are looking to do this more often, so please remember you can come to these masses. Look out for notifications on the website and social media. You are always welcome. It felt like you needed to bring both a coat and a bathing costume into the sports hall at some points as it fluctuated between really warm to quite chilly. With nearly 700 people in there, it got warm quite quickly!

The Lenten charity work, led by the pupils and superbly supported by you, enabled the pupils to raise £1750 for a range of charities including CAFOD, Father Hudson’s and the SVP. We have been contacted by CAFOD and they will be doing a story on the charitable work of the school. I’ll be sure to Tweet a link to that when it’s done.

I’m delighted to say that the reading time in school is now being embedded and, from the learning walk I did yesterday, it’s certainly been effective in increasing the number of minutes pupils are reading during the week. Alongside the Gospel reading for the week, looking at the news and the class reader scheme, the reading time has been the diverse and interesting session we had hoped. We will continue to monitor this and its impact on the pupils’ reading ages and test scores as we approach and move past the SATs in the summer term.

Have a peaceful and joyful half term.

Digital Resilience 1/2

Employ the same parenting skills you use offline to keep them safe, such as negotiating bounda-ries, talking about the difficult subjects we’d all rather avoid, helping your child to recognise what’s good and bad behaviour.

1.Set fair and consistent rules in relation to your child’s internet use at home. As they get older, try to agree the rules with them so that they have some control over their digital world.

2.Teach your child to think critically about what they read, see or hear online. For young children, that might mean encouraging them to ask ‘what would Mum or Dad say about that?’ As they get older they need to be able to assess for themselves whether they are in a risky online place and whether the information they are receiving is reliable and helpful to them. (The Parent Zone Digital Parenting course(link is external) explains in full why some online spaces are riskier than others.)

3.It’s much harder for people to empathise with each other when their communications are digital. It’s why trolls find it so easy to post horrible messages. Helping your child to understand that and to pause and think about the impact of things that are posted online, will help them cope with some of the difficult behaviour they will come across and avoid getting caught up in it.

Maintain a positive outlook on your child’s use of the internet.

4.Whatever you think to the stuff they watch or the hours they spend on Musical.ly or the PS4, if you constantly criticise the apps and games they love, they’re not going to want to talk to you about their online life.

5.Children who can recover from an online mistake can learn and avoid making the same mistake again. You can help by making it easy for them to talk to you about their mishaps (that means try-ing to keep calm even if you’re at your wits’ end!), making sure they know where to go for help if they need it, and recognising if they’re not recovering well so you can step in and get help for them.

6.Allow your child to explore and take charge of their online life.Having some control over any given situation is an important part of resilience – and it’s a really important part of digital resili-ence. It’s essential in helping them understand and develop their own sense of what’s right and wrong online.

Digital resilience is not fixed. It’s not a single ability or a set of lessons that can be learnt. It is something that every child can have and parents can do more than anyone else to foster it. Set clear boundaries for their life online and then step away, letting them explore the online world safe in the knowledge that you will be there to help if anything goes wrong.

Year 7 Basketball

The Year 7 Basketball Team played in the District Basketball Tournament on Thursday 15 February at Trinity High School. They won their group games, beating Church Hill 18-3, with Stan Amos, Tom Cronin, Tom Price, Haydon Baker and Cameron Campbell all scoring points, Ipsley 15-6, with Callum Walsh, Tom Cronin and Cameron Campbell all scoring 4pts each, and Tom Price and Haydon Baker also scoring. In their final game they beat Ridgeway 10-2, with Stan Amos, Tom Price, Oliver Cockram and Cameron Campbell scoring. This meant they topped the group and played Birchensale in the final.

The boys started on fire and by half time were 20 points up. They continued their dominance in the second half and ended up District Champions after a 34 – 6 victory, with Cameron Campbell top scoring with 16points.

Well done to all the boys who played their part in attack and defence; they should all be very proud of this achievement.

Squad: Stan Amos, Kristian Kubala, Callum Walsh, Tom Cronin, Tom Price, Haydon Baker, Charlie Fearnall, Oliver Cockram and Cameron Campbell.

Year 8 Basketball

Congratulations to the Year 8 boys basketball team who came runners up in the District Basketball final against Woodrush. The boys played really well, as they had to, with a 63-25 scoreline the game seemed a lot closer. They put together some really good plays and were able to score some brilliant team baskets. Unfortunately, Woodrush were a very strong team and were able to dominate in the key and score a lot of runaway lay ups. St Bede’s couldn’t have played any better and deserve their runners up medals.

Well done to Tom, Jim, George, Lewis, Will, Owen, Hassan and Leo for all their efforts and Harrison for his part in the semi-final victory.

MAC Cross Country

On Friday 9 February, we welcomed over 100 First School children to take part in our MAC Cross Country event.

The pupils all ran really well and tried their best, despite the wet and muddy conditions! Our sport leaders also helped to run the event and they did Mr Stenning proud by leading small groups and marshalling the race.

Year 3/4 pupils that took part all impressed with their efforts but only the top 30 will now progress to represent Our lady of Lourdes Academy in the district finals on the Friday 9 March.

After half term, we will be launching auditions for the Talent Show.

Auditions will take place the week commencing 5th February.

This year, to promote our House System we have decided that the Talent Show will be a house competition.

with Bronze medals at the closing presentation, the highest State School in the competition.

Well done to Maud Read, Evah Melsom, Lucy Hatfield, Mia Pritchard, Kiera Phillips, Hollie

Catholicity Update

Ash Wednesday and Lent 2018

This week marks the beginning of the Holy Season

of Lent. It is a time of prayer, fasting and charita-

ble giving which strengthens our faith and brings

us closer to God and to each other. The six weeks

of Lent remind us of the forty days and nights

which Jesus spent fasting and praying in the wil-

derness before He began His Ministry. These forty

days which we will journey through are a time of

spiritual preparation for the Commemoration of

the Suffering and Death of Jesus on the Cross on

Good Friday and the Celebration of His Resurrec-

tion at Easter.

As we begin our Lenten journey, let us seek to de-velop and strengthen our relationship with the Lord as we walk with Him over the next few days and weeks ahead. Lent is taken from an old Eng-lish word ‘lencten’ which means ‘spring’. This Holy Season is to be approached not as a time of bur-dening and despondency but as a time of joy and hope. The Lord in His love has given us this very special and precious time so we can have a good clear out of the ‘leaven’, those things which we have allowed to build up between us and the Lord and start afresh and seek to live our lives in new-ness of life. May He support us as we choose to journey with Him over these sacred weeks.

Lord Jesus, As Lent begins we ask for the power of Your Holy Spirit that we may become more thoughtful towards others, more honest with ourselves, and more faithful to You. Help us to walk in Your presence and grow as the people you want us to be. Amen. Brother Nicholas Hutchinson FSC

Mini Vinnies Update #15

16th February 2018

Last Friday, 9th February, in the midst of a very

busy Lenten Charities fundraising day here in

school the Mini Vinnies came together and made

over 160 sandwiches once again for the homeless

soup kitchen in Birmingham city centre. This ses-

sion the fillings were cheese, jam, chicken and

luncheon meat. We were down on a few Mini Vin-

nies as they were involved with the Lenten Chari-

ties stalls but the few who were able to help made

all the delicious sandwiches with such care and

precision that we were finished in record time! It

took the team just under half an hour to prepare,

make, cut, bag and pack the sandwiches ready for

collection later in the afternoon.

With the Lenten charities events, the Mini Vinnies

were really busy with many exciting stalls and

fundraising activities which will help to raise much

needed funds for the work of the SVP and in partic-

ular the Mini Vinnies. It was great to see them

work together as a team and with much joy and

enthusiasm. We are continuing to love life, live

Lent and make the difference for those who are in

need.

More updates to follow. Keep reading and pray

for us as we continue to be faith-filled, hopeful

for the future and as we live our lives as curious

and active Mini Vinnies!

Dear Candidate,

Prior to your attendance at the Enrolment Mass you will receive an Enrolment Certificate attached with this sheet. Please take careful note of the following points: This will be need to be handed in at the Enrolment Mass which you will attend with your family and Sponsor if they are available.

Please keep this Certificate nice and clean and flat as this will be presented to the Priest at your Enrolment Mass. This has been presented to you in a plastic wallet. Please use this to keep it in good order before it is handed in on either 3rd or 4th February at the Mass.

Please complete FULLY and avoid mistakes by writing out your promises in draft BEFORE you complete the Certificate in best.

Only use either BLACK or BLUE ink. No other colours please.

Remember to write your full name including middle names as well as first name and family name in BLOCK CAPITALS please.

You are to think about 3 or 4 achievable promises that will help you to live out your faith com-mitment as you take this next step in your life of faith and pilgrim journey as a Catholic Christian. Examples may include: (i) Attending Mass more often especially at weekends and maybe once dur-ing the week (ii) Reading the Bible every day (iii) Going to Confession more often (iv) Helping more at home (v) Learning more about my faith (vi) Praying every day (vii) Going to Eucharistic Adoration (viii) Researching my chosen Saint.

You are to sign the Certificate and take note of the promises you have made and will make again at the Enrolment Mass.

The Certificate MUST be signed by your parents and/or your Sponsor.

Sponsor Cards will be given out at the next Sacramental Preparation Session on Monday, 5th Febru-ary for both Parishes. Instructions for completing the Sponsor Card. This needs to be handed in before the Easter holiday break and deadline will be 28th March 2018 for this to be received in School.

Please complete in BLOCK CAPITALS in BLUE or BLACK ink. No other Colour.

Make sure that this is kept clean and flat and in a presentable condition as this will be handed to the Bishop when you are Confirmed in June.

Where it says “CONFIRMATION NAME” this is where you are to write the name of the Saint you have chosen which you will receive when the Sacrament is conferred on you. DO NOT write “Saint or St. Anne” just write “Anne”

The Card must be FULLY completed and your SPONSOR needs to complete the Promise on the back. If the card is returned in school incomplete or poorly presented i.e, scruffy with mistakes and crossings out then it may be returned to you or you will given a replacement and will be required to be com-pleted again. The Sponsor card is vital for your Confirmation. Write this out in draft before you complete it in best.
