    Birth to1 year

    An infant's primary interaction with the world isthrough the mouth. The mouth is vital for eating,

    and the infant derives pleasure from oralstimulation through gratifying activities such astasting and suc ing. !f this need is not met, thechild may develop an oral fi"ation later in life,e"amples of which include thum#$suc ing,smo ing, fingernail #iting and overeating.
