So here we are, deep into our third UK lockdown and several weeks

away from light at the end of the tunnel. Let’s all try to do our bit by dumping supermarket beers and instead help to support craft

brewers and bottle shops. They need us now more than ever.

New releases are starting to pick up again after the Christmas lull and

there are some pretty fine new beers to report on this week.

Just to remind you that TWICB have just launched on Patreon, so if

you are feeling generous and want some extra goodies check out our Patreon Offer. See page 13 for details.

TWICB PODCAST – This week Rob is joined by Shaz and Mike from Docks Beer based in Grimsby. Download this Episode on Tuesday

and join in the fun. We also have many exciting new guests lined up for the next quarter.

TWICB is all about the Craft Beer Community and sharing stories and beers together. Please let us know of any new features or suggestions to improve our Newsletter. All gratefully received. Send to: [email protected]

    North Brewing Co.

Triple Fruited Gose: Blueberry & Apricot

4.5% Fruited Gose 1.2 tons of organic blueberry and apricot puree making for a bright pink hue and

sweet grape, floral and peachy flavours plus lactose to thicken it further and bring out every single one of those fruit flavours. Salt then curves that sour tart

smack and rounding it all off on the finish.

    Overtone Brewing Co.

    Loral, Loral Laughs

4.7% Session IPA Brewed with Loral, Idaho 7 and Simcoe, this hazy brew is an earthy, tropical

    flavour explosion.

nuttiness to the beer. Slovenian hops give lemon, thyme and black pepper aromas and flavours.

    Phantom Brewing Co.

Hoodie Weather 6% IPA Packed with Mosaic, Simcoe, Cryo Mosaic & Cryo Simcoe, it's got a punch of orange zest and stone fruit with a soft and fluffy mouthfeel.

    Duration Brewing Co.

Time Marches On 6% Farmhouse Ale A beer with a floral hop aroma, delicate bitterness, and a light biscuit malt undertone. Beautifully complex as a young beer to drink fresh or as time marches

6.9% IPA Chinook represents the old school, being generously used in the whirlpool to

impart delicious piney bitterness, Citra rocks up as the modern classic in the dry hop, bringing a wave of juicy citrus notes, and the future is handily dealt with by

    finishing with trademark resinous bitterness.

    Signature Brew

Lo-Fi 0.5% Alcohol Free Pale Ale This hazy, non-alcoholic beer might be inspired by the lo-fi beats we listen to when we want a chill one, but it contains nothing but the highest quality Simcoe

  • PATREON ANNOUNCEMENT Discover the benefits of membership

When we launched This Week in Craft Beer in January 2020, we were blissfully

unaware of what lay ahead of us! Considering the obstacles we have all faced, we

are proud of what we managed to accomplish in our first year.

However, we have lots more that we want to do in 2021! In order to fund these

activities and to enable our Community to get more involved with the creative process at TWICB, we have launched a Patreon Membership Programme.

Full details of how you can get involved starting at less than the cost of a half-decent can of beer per

month, can be found at patreon.com/thisweekincraftbeer.

Don't worry, our weekly Newsletter and Podcast will continue to be FREE FOR EVERYONE! The Patreon

Membership offers access to range of brand new TWICB Products and Services. Please check it out and

let us know what you think?!

    www.thisweekincraft.beer/patreon

    Q. Why are you starting to charge for things that we have enjoyed for free all this year?A. We aren't! The weekly Newsletter and weekly Brewer-interview Podcast will continue to be free to everyone. Patreon will

enable us to offer brand-new additional products and services to Members.

    Q. What's this about Members getting involved with TWICB?A. We have been amazed and delighted with the amount of engagement and feedback we have received during our first year, via

social media, email etc. The UK Craft Beer Community is clearly engaged, knowledgeable and sociable! We want to provide a mechanism for bringing the community into our creative process, allowing people to participate in the planning, research,

production and delivery of our products.

    Q. Why do you have to charge for things? A. TWICB is run by just two people: Rob and Steve. Whilst it is undoubtedly a labour of love, it has developed into something that

consumes a significant part of our working weeks. Steve works mainly on the Newsletter, where the New Beers Section alone

takes many hours per week, to research, collate and format. Rob works mainly on the podcast, where each episode takes several

hours to schedule, research, record, edit and promote. Whilst we will continue to invest this time to produce the free products, we think Patreon could be a great way of funding the time and effort that we want to devote to developing new products and

    services.

    Q. Apart from your time, what specifically will the Patreon proceeds be used to fund?A. As soon as the COVID-19 situation permits, we want to take the podcast on the road, to record Brewer interviews at their own

Taprooms, as well as record live segments at Festivals, Tap-Takeovers and other beery events of note. In order to provide a quality

finished audio product, we will need to invest in some decent mobile recording equipment, not to mention the cost of travelling

the length and breadth of Britain in the pursuit of great interviews!

    Q. What is the thought process behind the bundles of Patreon Membership bonuses that you are offering?A. We have tried to come up with bundles that combine some community benefits, exclusive digital products, exclusive physical

products, invites to exclusive TWICB events, discounts on TWICB Grand Tours and opportunities to participate in the TWICB

creative process. We have tried to price each Membership Level so that each offers outstanding value for money. We have also

tried to be mindful of the number of Patreon members that we can realistically include in each bonus activity. (Clearly the invite to

participate in the podcast interview or attend the TWICB "Board Meeting" needs to be strictly limited in numbers, or else the bonus

would cease to be "exclusive” and would risk disrupting the actual process itself.)

    Q. Are the Membership Benefits and Levels set in stone? A. Of course not! We are literally making this up as we go along currently! We would love to get your feedback on the Levels, the

Benefits, and indeed the very idea of using Patreon in the first place! Please hit us up on IG (@thisweekincraft.beer) or via email [email protected]. We confidently expect to need to adjust the Patreon model as we go along, based on feedback.

    Q. Is this like a Gym membership, where I sign up in January, and then regret it for the rest of the year?!

    A. Definitely Not! Membership is month-to-month and you can cancel your membership at any time. Only caveat here is that

certain Member Benefits (mainly those ones that involve a significant cost for us to provide to you) are only unlocked after three

or six months at a certain tier.

  • BREWER’S CORNER Miscellaneous Beery News

At Beervana, our favourite US-blogger Jeff Alworth cuts through the gloom to

describe how deeply ingrained Craft Beer is now in US hospitality culture.

    https://www.beervanablog.com/beervana/2021/1/14/cultural-triumph-of-craft-

The Pub Curmudgeon has a well-written piece about the

breakdown of the vertical integration in the UK between the

family-owned regional cask breweries and their pub chains.

    https://pubcurmudgeon.blogspot.com/

Here at TWICB we won't be mourning the passing of either, as it opens up opportunities for smaller

independent breweries of both cask and keg beers, as well as independent pubs and taprooms.

New School Beer have an article announcing that the Craft

Brewers Conference has been pushed back from March to

    September 2021.

    https://newschoolbeer.com/home/2021/1/craft-brewers-

    conference-amp-brew-expo-rescheduled-to-denver-in-202

This is set to be a theme this year, as festival and event organisers try to second-guess when it will be safe for them to run. Friends of Anarchy has moved from Jan to Aug, BrewLDN from Feb to May and Hop

City has moved from April to July, It is going to be a very busy, and boozy, 2nd Half of 2021!

Finally, the Brewers Journal has a great in-depth article about DEYA, as they transitioned to a 3x larger brewery without missing a beat in

  • Viva la Revolución!

Here at TWICB, we are not claiming to be the UK's largest lobby group, or even the UK's largest beer

lobby group(!), but we do have a growing audience, who we hope might be willing to support the

    following Craft Beer related causes

Petition Southwark Council to pedestrianise the Bermondsey Beer Mile on a Saturday.

With pedestrianisation of some of the busiest streets in Bermondsey on Saturdays only, we can get the

many bars and restaurants back up to their previous operating levels whilst keeping customers safe with outdoor drinking.

Reverse the change to Small Brewers Relief

The Treasury has announced changes to Small Brewers Relief (SBR) – the progressive tax system that has revolutionised UK brewing. These changes will reduce the 50% duty threshold from 5,000hl to

2,100hl: small breweries will have to pay more duty, whilst larger breweries could pay the same or less.

At the moment, we are conscious that this is very London-focused! Please help us to make this list of

causes more UK-inclusive, by suggesting your local petitions for inclusion on this list!

  • WHO OWNS WHO…?

This Week in Craft Beer is dedicated to supporting and promoting Independent UK Craft Breweries and

    the ecosystem surrounding them.

We define Independent as being those breweries who are not wholly or partly owned by a macro

brewery. A macro brewery is generally defined as a large, national or international brewery that produces and distributes more than 6 million barrels of beer per year.

Getting a new brewery off the ground is an expensive business, so most have external shareholders in some shape or form, whether through friends and family, crowdfunding, or some other form of

investment. In our opinion, this does not compromise their independence, as long as the shareholder is not a macro brewery.

    Why does this matter?

Having a Macro as a parent company (even a minority shareholder), gives the brewery huge advantages

of patronage, including access to cheaper or scarce ingredients, access to distribution networks, access to points of sale including draft taps and pub fridges etc. For example, in 2017 ABInbev bought the

entire South African hop market for its own use and denied access to all independent breweries.
