Problems with OLIS
1. Cannot sort more than 500 items (in WebCat)2. Cannot search by medium ie cannot search for dissertations in Oxford3. Cannot input diacritics ie accents and cedillas4. Does not show all available electronic resources (or older titles)5. Possible to limit search by library only in Telnet version of OLIS (two versions of cat. awkward)6. Not very user-friendly (but allows browsing)7. HOWEVER, sometimes possible to supplement OLIS by using COPAC
![Page 8: French Electronic resources Trinity 2008 Nick Hearn](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062309/56649f135503460f94c27a81/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
COPAC to the rescue!
User-friendly
30 million records
More than 30 UK and Irish Research libraries including the British Library
If item not held by Oxford possible to get through interlibrary loan from one of the COPAC libraries
Can be used to search OLIS

The hypothesis:
That Victor Hugo's treatment of the animal kingdom is less hierarchicalthan that of other French writers.
What is a 'corpus'?A large and structured set of texts (now usually electronically stored and processed)They are used to do statistical analysis, checking occurrences or validating linguisticrules on a specific universe.
What is FRANTEXT?A corpus of some 3700 works from the 16th to the 20th centuries originally developedas a citations database for the Trésor de la langue française (roughly equivalent to the OED).

Conclusion
Many similarities between Anglophone and Francophone electronic resource ‘landscape’
Anglophone 'landscape' excels at journal articles
Francophone good at online reference, audiovisual (multimedia)
Have not covered: FRANTEXT in depth, Web 2.0, Voltaire, Montaigne
Future developments: Electronic enlightenment project
As for John, Peter and Fred:
John went on to get a good degree in French
Peter still finishing his PhD on Montaigne
Fred about to publish his book ‘La bête noire’
