AntioquiaTala-Veras | Aug. 22 Playing everything from funk and rock to soukous and cumbia, Antioquia features the music of five California musicians - Ra-chel Antony-Levine, Adley, Paul Martin, Craig Miller and Tomas Salcedo. Their shows are high energy, and anything but predict-able – full of improvisation and fiery percussion and inspiring audiences to dance and get into the action. Releases include Gringolandia and My Piano Ate the Front Page of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Red Wanting BlueBug Jar | Aug. 22 From Columbus OH, the rock band Red Wanting Blue made its network television debut recently on David Letterman; and tour in support of their current album, From The Vanishing Point.

Brave ComboGeorge Eastman House | Aug. 23 In the course of a three decade musical career, many words have been used to describe Brave Combo, but their name still says it all: a band that is not afraid to

take musical chances. Specializ-ing in a unique brand of domestic and exotic dance rhythms that fuel what Billboard calls, “world-wise, unclassifiable music,” Brave Combo’s sound grew out of a love for the European and American polka. Their recordings include Polkasonic and Lets Kiss, both Grammy Award-winners.

Coyote Campus & Bad Soundw/My Plastic SunAbilene Bar & Lounge | Aug. 23 Formed in 2010 at SUNY Pur-chase, Coyote Campus combines

piano, drums, bass and horns to form a sound that’s constantly changing emotional states. They describe themselves as “the em-bodiment of nervous energy.” Their debut EP is “People You Know.”… Utica’s Bad Sound tours in support of a self-titled debut. The group features Connor Be-nincasa, Jacob Sachs-Mishalanie and Zeno Pittarelli…Both bands appear at Abilene’s in support of Rochester’s own, My Plastic Sun, featuring Johnny Cummings, Sam Snyder and Roy Stein. They have a self-titled EP recorded at GFI Studios.

Paul HooperComedy Club | Aug. 23 – 25 Known for his politically incor-rect and thought provoking com-edy, Paul Hooper has appeared in clubs from Florida to Alaska; rant-ing through a non-stop routine that slams society and himself with absolute irreverence. Paul has been featured at the HBO Comedy Fest in Las Vegas, the Boston Comedy Festival and the Vancouver Comedy Fest; and he was a finalist at the 30th annual Seattle International Comedy Competition.

Trainw/Mat Kearney & Andy GrammerCMAC | Aug. 24 Since forming in 1994, the broad appeal of Train has been based on their songs and stage presence. The San Francisco pop outfit has had hits with “Free,” “Meet Virginia,” the Grammy-winning “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me),” “Calling All Angels,” “If It’s Love,” and “Marry Me” - among others. “Hey, Soul Sister” won “Best Pop Performance” at the 2011 Grammy Awards and “Top Rock Song” at the Billboard Awards as well as “Song of the

Year” at the ASCAP Awards. His self-titled debut album is on S-Curve Records.

EDM TakeoverMain Street Armory | Aug. 24 This EDM Takeover features Manufactured Superstars and Bad Boy Bill. DJs Brad-ley Roulier and Shawn Sabo are the Manufactured Superstars. Their perfor-mance style is high-energy, accessible and technically challenging. They’ve DJ’ed at major outdoor festivals including the Ultra Music Festival, the Electric Daisy Carnival, and the Lief Fes-tival; and in top clubs like XS in Las Vegas and Green-house in New York - taking the stage with a vengeance and making them one of the top party acts in the na-tion…Chicago’s DJ Bad Boy Bill is known to play on six turntables at once! He was voted America’s Favorite DJ by BPM Magazine and has become an international house icon.

C’est Bon Cajun Dance BandAbilene Bar & Lounge | Aug. 25 The all-female group, C’est Bon Cajun Dance Band, features Barbara Sanders on accordion, Susi Mills and Jane DeLisa on fiddle, Betsy Fuller on guitar and Evelyn Schneider on bass. C’est Bon has been singing and playing Cajun music in the north-east area for nearly twenty years, keeping the spirit alive with shows that earn loyal fans at each stop.

Wayne “The Train” HancockAbilene Bar & Lounge | Aug. 27 Wayne “The Train” Hancock is a former Marine who’s been writing songs his whole life. Of-ten compared to Hank Williams,

Hancock released a debut album in 1995 and has gone on to record several CDs over the years. In addition, his compositions have been recorded by several country musicians, including Hank Wil-liams III.

Kelly Clarkson & The Frayw/Carolina LiarCMAC | Aug. 29 Singer/songwriter Kelly Clark-

son came to national attention as the winner on the inaugural season of American Idol in 2002. That led to her debut release, Breakaway, featuring four #1 singles and winning Kelly her first Grammy Award. Since then, she has gone on to release My Decem-ber, All I Ever Wanted and Stronger. Her career has earned her mul-tiple Gold and Platinum certified albums, Billboard Awards, AMAs, MTV Video Awards, Grammy Awards, Junos, People’s Choice and Teen Awards…The piano rock band, The Fray released a debut album, How to Save a Life, in 2005 featuring the singles, “Over My Head (Cable Car)” and “How to Save a Life.” The multiple Gram-my Award-winners now tour in support of their Scars and Stories CD which features the single “Run For Your Life.” Other hits include “Heartbeat,” “You Found Me,”

FREETIME August 22 - September 5, 201220

In Flanders FieldsBy Mark Tichenor I write this column with a bel-lyful of giddy anticipation about attending Brewery Ommegang’s annual Belgium Comes to Cooper-stown festival. Of course, by the time you read this, Belgium will be on an Airbus A330 headed home. Still, the excitement is focusing my attention on Belgian beer, and how, curiously, we Americans are starting to take it for granted. Not long ago Belgium, a nation in which you could see from one border to the other with a good pair of binoculars, was the giant of the beer world. Out of its abbeys, town breweries and farmhouses poured more individual, strange and diverse brews than anywhere else on the planet. Before the craft brewing movement gathered steam, American beer lovers wide-ly considered the Belgian stuff to be the finest in existence. It stayed that way for a long time, mostly because American

craft brewers were crap at copying Belgian beer styles. But then some things happened. Instead of do-ing the sensible thing and giving up, brewers kept trying to make Belgian beer. Equipment got better, so did yeast and hop strains. Even-tuall y, our small brew-eries did to Belgian Beer what Japa-nese electron-ics companies once did to American TV manufacturers: They beat them out of the mar-ket with beers that ranged from almost as good to better, and gener-ally with a much gentler punch to the lucky drink-er’s wallet. Being the cre-ative little devils that they are, some craft brewers took Belgian style cues and ran with them, conjuring up entirely

new hybrid styles like Belgian IPA, in which spicy Belgian yeast and extreme Pacific Northwest hoppi-ness marry so well that breweries in Belgium started producing ex-

amples of their own. S o m e U S

b r e w e r i e s make only a halfhearted stab at Bel-gian styles, but others , such as Lost Abbey and Brewery Om-megang, do nothing else,

and thrive in rarefied terri-tory at the top of the luxury beer chain. A quick peek at their facilities in-dicates that these brewers are not starved for busi-ness or revenue. So now, Bel-gian brews are on the beer lover’s back burner here in the USA. We’re

so inundated with choice, novelty and

marketing stuntage that there’s less reason to look overseas than ever before. And yet, it can’t be said that Bel-gian beer is rendered irrelevant. The country’s unique geography and tradition still allow for the creation of beers that can’t quite be duplicated on these shores, and, for some styles (sour ales and lambics, for example), American brewmasters have very much to learn. Thus, there will always be a place for the beers of Belgium and American beers brewed to Belgian style guidelines to coexist and actually complement each other. The alluring hint of spice in an American-made tripel or witbier might pique a drinker’s curiosity enough to delve into the imported stuff, read the stories, learn the history, and find a new, impos-sibly small world of big beers merely one ocean away.

Mark owns a laptop and likes beer. For more on beer, check out the beercraft blog, updated regularly, at beercraft.wordpress.com. Find him on Twitter @beercraft. Send your questions, suggestions, or com-ments to [email protected].

HIT & RUNWritten by Dax Shepard; directed by Dax Shepard and David PalmerOpen Road Films Rated R

By Ed Symkus There was a time when car chase movies were king. When Steve McQueen tore up the road behind the wheel of a Ford Mus-tang in Bullitt (1968) and Gene Hackman took on the public transit system with his Pontiac Le Mans in The French Connection (1970); when Burt Reynolds showed what a Pontiac Trans Am could do in Smok e y and the Bandit (1977) and Jake and Elwood Blues went on a cross country ride in a Dodge Monaco in The Blues Brothers (1980). Car chase mov-ies have come and gone , but this one, featuring, at least in the first half, a 1967 Lin-coln Continental with, mind you, 700 horses under the hood, has a few extras. Along with the wild action, you get some slapstick comedy and a wholly believable hunk of heart. Written in just under three weeks and co-directed by Dax Shepard (along with his pal David Palmer), the film has the shaggy

dog feel of, well, something that was written in just under three weeks. It’s about Charlie Bron-son (Shepard), a fellow who’s been holed up in a little town, courtesy of witness protection, for a few years, but has decided to come out so his girlfriend An-nie (Kristen Bell) can take a job back in L.A., from whence he fled after turning state’s evidence on a bank robber. The gist of the film is that the road trip back to L.A. turns into a run for his life, since the fellow he ratted on (a curiously dread-

locked Bradley Cooper), angry as all get-out, has been tipped off and is after him. Hence, that car chase, and it’s a good one, split up into sections in order to give the actors time to de-liver dialogue, tell stories, be funny, get romantic. That’s where the believability factor comes in. There’s a whole lot of autobiogra-phy going on. In the film, Charlie

(yes, it’s his witness protection name) and Annie have been together for a year. As the story unfolds, she suddenly starts learning all kinds of things about his past, about, as he puts it, “the old me.” In real life, Shepard and Bell have been an item for about five years. Both have said in recent interviews that their first year

onSCREEN

together consisted of Shepard revealing tidbits such as his past drinking and drug abuse, as well as his tendency not to back down from fistfights. The combination of Shepard, the writer, having a good ear for dialogue, and Shepard and Bell, the actors, not being afraid to let their own lives kind of hang out onscreen, makes for some refresh-ing movie watching. Of course, that could get a little tired after a while, so the script is peppered with a little something for every-one. Tom Arnold, playing Randy, a smalltown cop who’s helping Charlie hide out, but having a great deal of comic trouble with moving vehicles and guns, provides most of the comedy relief, and Arnold is on fire here, running around yelling, ready to take a pratfall like a pro. Cooper, still best known for his Hangover roles, doesn’t go the comedy route this time. Instead he pulls off an almost-convincing bad guy part, sometimes oozing menace, sometimes just standing around looking odd (note: this man should never wear dreads). There’s a surfeit of cameos, only one of which will be revealed here: Beau Bridges as Charlie’s dad; a bit of irony: Amongst the plentiful violence, we learn that Annie has a “non-violent conflict doctorate”; and many opportuni-ties for Shepard and Bell to react to each other via funny, snappy, insightful talk and a wide variety of expressions on their faces. These people are fun to hang out with. The movie could’ve gotten away with being a little longer.

Opening August 22

Hit & Run Dax Shepard (Idiocracy, the TV show Parenthood) wrote , co-directed, co-edited, and stars in this car chase tale of a fellow who leaves witness protection to help his girlfriend (Kristen Bell). Action of the wild sort, some slapstick comedy, the feel of true romance (true because Shepard and Bell are a real-life couple). Tom Arnold is funny. Bradley Cooper is menacing.

Opening August 24

The Apparition When some college kids get together to do a little paranormal experimenting, they accidentally let loose a nasty and of course murderous supernatural pres-ence. They fight it off, but not very successfully. Low budget bumps in the night, and beautiful people running around in their underwear.

Farewell My Queen An exploration of life during four days at Versailles right around the begin-ning of the French Revolution. Marie Antoinette (Diane K r u g e r ) e n jo ys books, but is power-ful enough to have others read them to her, and this story is told through the eyes of one of those readers, Sidonie (Lea Seydoux). It’s really a look at what’s going on behind the scenes at the palace, a kind of glitzy 18th century soap opera.

Premium Rush A bicycle delivery guy in New York City (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is given a special envelope – a “pre-mium rush” job – that he’d better

get where it’s going with no problems. Michael Shannon plays the mysteri-ous guy who wants to get that envelope away from him be-fore it’s delivered. Quite a few other people want it, too. The chase is on.

Opening August 29

Lawless Three broth-ers (Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Ja-son Clarke) run a bootlegging mo-

nopoly in rural Virginia during the Great Depression. They’re doing so well at it, the law steps in, demanding a cut of the action. Gary Oldman plays a Chicago mobster, while Guy Pearce gives new meaning to being a supposed good guy-turned bad. With Jessica Chastain.

Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure Remember the Teletubbies? Same thing, only larger, and they can talk and, most unbelievably, a cast of well-known actors is taking part in all of this: Cary Elwes, Cloris Leachman, Christopher Lloyd,

Chazz Palminteri among them. Only for VERY young viewers.

Opening August 31

Celeste and Jesse Forever The title characters in this dramatic comedy are played by Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg. They’re a couple in the midst of a divorce who still really like each other and want to remain friends, but have trouble doing so when they each start dating others. Co-written by Jones and Will Mc-Cormick (who also appears in the film).

Killer Joe It’s the year of Matthew McCo-naughey. After strutting his stuff in Magic Mike, he now magnifi-cently plays a small-town sheriff who’s a hitman on the side. He’s hired by a very stupid father and son (Thomas Haden Church and Emile Hirsch) to commit a murder for some insurance money, but he doesn’t react well when there’s a problem with the payment. This is a comedy of the blackest, sleazi-est sort. With Gina Gershon and Juno Temple. Directed by William Friedkin.

The Possession Yard sales are bad for you, especially if you buy something – let’s say an antique box – that has an evil spirit living inside it. Especially if, when you take the box home and open it ... well, you know what happens. The purchaser is a young girl (Em Brenek). Her divorced parents (Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick) reunite with hopes of saving her soul.
