LYNDOCH Branch Nigel Cooper, the Manager of the Red Cross Migration

Support programme, gave members an update on asylum seekers. As there are no boat arrivals, asylum seekers now arrive by plane. These are only people who can obtain a passport and visa. There are countries where people are being persecuted where this is not possible. The asylum seekers are processed off shore on Manus Island, Christmas Island and Nauru. Although Nauru is a tropical island, the detention centre is located on gravel in the centre where mining was previously carried out. The conditions are severe. Red Cross has humanitarian responsibilities and can enter the detention centres to talk to people. Lyndoch members attended the Zone Meeting in Gawler on Monday 23 February. On the 24th, five members attended a Garden Party at the McLachlan property hosted by the Mount Pleasant branch of Red Cross. Red Cross meetings are held on the first Monday of the month in the Council Chambers (behind the Library) at 2 pm. Anyone interested in Red Cross and their activities are invited to attend the meeting. The annual subscription is only $5. The next meeting is on Monday 2 March which is a Business Meeting. Don't forget to watch out for Red Cross Calling in March. We are hoping to have Bingo at our May meeting. Unfortunately, our bingo caller is no longer able to help us. If there is a bingo caller out there willing to give an hour of their time on Monday 4 May, please contact Malinda. For more information on the above or Red Cross, please phone Malinda on 8524 5353.

Williamstown & District Historical Society

Dedication Ceremony: Sunday 19th April, 2pm

On the 19th April 2015 a Memorial will be unveiled at a Dedication Ceremony

Honoring WW1 Fallen Soldiers of our District. This Monument is located in

front of the original R.S.L which is also known as the Williamstown & Districts

Seniors Club on Memorial Drive.

The Lyndoch & Williamstown R.S.L Sub Branch as it was known then was

opened by Mr J.K.Barritt of Lyndoch on Monday 27th November 1954. Rev

Armstrong of Williamstown Dedicated the building. The work was carried out

by contractors & voluntary labor using stone recovered from Wongalere, home

of the Gilbert Family. The homestead was demolished during construction of the

South Para Reservoir. The rooms were opened with a deficit of 200 pounds. That

evening a social was held and a collection was taken up. A district resident, who

wished to remain anonymous, generously offered to donate the difference

between the collection total and the balance owing so that the clubrooms would

actually be debt free. In later minutes it was revealed with a “Thank You” to Mr

J.S. Holmes that he was the kind donor. On the 25th Sept 1985 it was with regret

and because of decreasing membership, that an agreement be drawn up between

the R.S.L and the Williamstown War Memorial Community Centre Inc. “They

accepted and took possession and ownership of the said property and that they

undertake to make and keep same available at all times for the community use”

It is with great pride that ANZAC & History Committees have with the

assistance of DVA been able to honor our fallen soldiers and to keep their

memory alive through their descendants and the younger generation.

PLEASE COME ALONG AND JOIN US ON THE DAY.
