The Champagne of Beers v. King of Beers Sometimes you want a clean, uncomplicated beer to compliment a meal, a whiskey on the side, or for true session drinking. Two classic choices are presented in Miller High Life (“The Champagne of Beers”) and Budweiser (“King of Beers”). High Life, an American Lager, has been described by even the beer snobs as “an honest beer” that won’t break the bank. It weighs in at 4.6% ABV and roughly 150 calories. Budweiser is the other granddaddy of lagers and has a negligibly higher ABV at 5.0%. At 145 calories per 12-ounce can, you can certainly have more than one— especially on a hot day. From both, expect a light, crisp taste that suits any dish and won’t clash with anything else you may be sipping (or shooting). —It’s a tie.

Social Media Overload:The Sad Truth About Using Twitter & Facebook to Advertise
by Tony Caravan
Once you become “favorited” a lot, and retweeted a lot, you gain a certain perception of influence in the social media community. Our staff @157GUIDE have achieved that through hard work, providing tweets that we believe actually have substance, and by carefully weeding out the riff raff (sometimes on a daily basis). Basically, that means, we try to always focus on quality, not quantity. That said, the vast majority of accounts out there, many with high numbers, are what are referred to as social media whores. They let anyone follow them, just to get their numbers up. They even bribe or pay people to like them—all to fool others into believing that they are popular. But the truth is, it doesn’t work, and here are the three main reasons why: First of all, the structure of Facebook and Twitter, and the need to scroll down to read what’s been posted is a major flaw in the GUI (pronounced gooey), or Graphical User Interface. —Sorry to get all geeky on you. Anyway, what that means is that, the more “popular” you become, or, the more friends and followers you have, the harder it is keep track of what’s being shared, posted and retweeted. In fact, once you get over a couple of dozen friends or followers, your feed starts to get completely out of control. And yes, I know there are ways to control what is visible, etc., however, that’s exactly my point: most people are really only paying attention to a relatively small number of people; and the rest either get blocked out or lost in endless timelines and scrolls of meaningless drivel. Secondly, why this matters… For people who have it all figured out, it doesn’t matter that much, it just means they have to spend a lot of time checking to see what their friends have posted. But for businesses like bars, restaurants
Tony Caravan is the author of three books and the soon-to-be-released “conversations.” His books and songs are available at Amazon.com, the iBook Store, iTunes, and YouTube. Visit ROCKFLUX.com
and clubs, however, it can mean the difference between having a good night, and whether people show up or not. The reality is, most people tune out the hype and bull tweets. Unless you’re tweeting or posting (with a photo) of some hotties having a good time (right now) at your place, you get lost (or blocked), like all the other businesses that try to use Facebook and Twitter as a way to get free advertising. Face it, you’re a cheap bastard! People know you’re a cheap bastard; and they also wonder where else you are cutting corners to save a few bucks—like with your drinks, food, people’s health and safety, etc… Yeah, somebody had to say it, so I did, so there… Lastly, Indiana is a transient community. People are here for a few years of college, an energy industry project, a sales call, etc. And, while many ex’s come back for homecoming (though those numbers are dwindling), most move on with their lives, get new friends and start to “follow them.” The thing is, they still show up as followers on people’s Twitter pages, even though they live in another part of the state or country and don’t give a rat’s ass about Indiana, IUP or coming back for a middle of the week food or drink special. Which is probably the biggest flaw in “the numbers,” and why they’re not a true guage of the size of the audience. Conclusion: If you really want to reach people, advertise; if you want to look like a cheapskate and panderer, tweet. Also, be aware that there are many new apps and social sites popping up, and that you might want to consider using more photos and videos—they’re big and getting bigger. —Have a nice decade!

WHISKEYbig & getting bigger
In case you didn’t get the memo, the craft beer movement is over. It’s gone the way of classic rock—still enjoyed by many, but no longer in the mainstream. It kind of makes your heart go out for all of those local establishments that installed dozens of taps for flavored and overly-hop’d brews. But this column is not about the past, it’s about the future—and the future belongs to whiskey—more precisely—American bourbon and whiskey brands. Whether you drink it neat (no ice) or on the rocks with a splash of water or soda; whiskey is an alcoholic beverage with a depth of flavors and aromas beyond compare. Its essence is drawn from the distilling process through aging in charred or uncharred, new or used oak barrels. While a beer and a shot is a time-proven way to make a quick attitude adjustment; once achieved, it’s then time to sip and savor your caramel-colored drink. Whiskeys are defined by their primary ingredient (51%) in the “mash” mixture. They can be broken down to rye, rye malt, malt (malted barley), wheat or bourbon (corn). Corn whiskey is not bourbon, it’s closer to moonshine and contains 80% or more corn. Whiskeys are also defined as being straight or blended, depending on the alcohol by volume and the aging time. Ask your bartender to let you read the label; or, if he or she is knowlegeable, be inquisitive. Whiskey pairs great with most meats and seafood dishes, but stick with wine for pasta meals. Also, American whiskey is a great companion for lager and premium beers. But avoid the crafts, since they’ll clash with complexity of the bourbon. As for the best places to enjoy whiskey in town—you’ll find them everywhere. But don’t be surprised if the bartenders look a little surprised when you ask them for their selection of domestic bourbons and whiskeys. Eventually they’ll come around, once they realize that Whiskey is making a big comeback, and soon to over-take the crafts in a barroom near you. —Cheers!
