Everything in One Place—to plan you’re whole month
A to ZCreated, designed & published by
The Fall is upon us (in more ways than one)… Of course, we kick off the month with Homecoming (5th); which I won’t over-elaborate on, other than that the borough ought to go easy once a year on the students who ultimately are the reason that this town is what it is. --And by the way, townies, get out and support Crimson Hawks football. For civil servants, bankers and IHSers, there’s a three-day weekend in celebration of that guy who didn’t discover America. For the rest of us there’s Oktoberfest! Downtown Indiana holds their annual Saturday afternoon (12th) beer party (2 or 3-6 depending on how much you’re willing to fork out). It’s on the old borough parking lot. …Speaking of which, the new Brown Hotel will begin their week-long celebration after the DI one ends. Likewise, thanks to Fräuleins Brittany, Morgan and Alex for posing for the cover, and The Costume Shop on North 6th Street for providing the outfits. Finally, let’s not forget Halloween. It’s the second biggest commercial holiday to Christmas, when cosplay is rampant, and sugar-binging is encouraged. It’s also a good time at the bars. -- Go out and enjoy - TC

by Tony C
I’m starting to sound like a broken record on an old Wurlitzer jukebox (see photo at right) —Watch out, B-3 skips! The thing is, before those over-priced internet touch-screen contraptions became ubiquitous, bars were a lot more fun. —Why, you say? If you’ve never known anything but the current status quo machines; believe me, you have no idea how much things have changed, and what you’re missing. Until only a few years ago, bars were defined by the music on their jukeboxes. And, likewise, the tunes that were not available on them. The selection of songs fit the atmosphere of the place, as well as the lifestyles of the regular patrons. If it was a roadhouse, you’d find country, oldies and some rhythm and blues. A hot spot would have a lot of upbeat rock and roll. A “couples” bar had ballads.
How the newJUKEBOXES RUINED the Bar Scene
Wurlitzer Seeburg circa 1958
And a place with a big dance floor was loaded with pop songs. —You get the picture… Basically, what I’m trying to say, is that you knew what to expect when you went out. In fact, the type of music a bar played was the main reason you went there. Today, practically every bar has the same jukebox. And though you have your choice of thousands of songs to play, so does everybody else. Meaning, that if you’re in the mood for some good time music, some idiot might play something depressing, or vice-versa. It’s all part of this “copy cat, try to please everyone” mentality that has infected many of the bars in Indiana. The same music, the same drink specials, same promotions, the same this, the same that. —B o r i n g ! Wouldn’t it be nice if somebody broke the mold and brought back a CD
jukebox? Or, put some effort into programming their ownhouse system (sans DJs). Anyway, judging from all the competition this year, I think that if a couple of bars better defined themselves through music, they’d see a bunch of new customers. Who wants to go through the ordeal of getting ready for a night out, if there’s a chance that you’ll just spend money and have a bad time. I hope you don’t—Cheers!

Interview: Joe Grushecky Joe Grushecky considers his newest album, Somewhere East of Eden, released this month, to be one of his best. “I had the luxury of writing a lot of songs and being able to take my time to record them (in Nashville)” he told publisher Tony C. recently. Grushecky says he mainly writes about what he knows—“everything starts with me playing my acoustic”—which Grushecky brings full circle to his solo performances. When asked about his recent shows compared to those in the past, he remarked, “I think my shows today are better than ever,” he then added with a chuckle, “I’m just getting the hang of it…” Outside of Western Pennsylvania, Grushecky is considered one of rock’s best kept secrets. And whose name is invariably linked with Bruce Springsteen (a friend, writing and performing partner). Rolling Stone called his band, the former Iron City Houserockers 1979 debut album “the least polished …but one of the best.” A prolific singer-songwriter, Grushecky has gone on to produce both solo albums and and with the “Houserockers.” He’ll appear unplugged 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Backyard in New Florence. his time of year it seems like we’re all a little mad for pumpkin. From cupcakes and coffee to...beer! America’s brewers are doing their part to oblige our cravings for this spicy, seasonal sensation. So let’s run down what you can find where, on tap and in the bottle. And if pumpkin isn’t your thing, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered, too. In alphabetical order, more or less... Abita Fall Fest is an Octoberfest-style lager suitable for those looking for something light and easy-drinking. Abita sister beer, Harvest Pecan is made with real, roasted Louisiana roasted pecans for a nice, nutty flavor. Now, for the promised pumpkin, we lead off with Brooklyn Brewery’s spicy, crisp and drinkable Post Road Pumpkin—it’s available on draft at Twisted Jimmy’s. For something a little more intense, try a dark and spicy Pumpkin Stout from Pittsburgh’s own Church Brew Works (on draft at Ironwood and Twisted Jimmy’s). Pumple Drumkin Spiced Ale from Nantucket’s Cisco Brewers (on draft at Benjamin’s) is decidedly understated when it comes to pumpkin

flavor and is more earthy than dessert-y. Similarly, The Fear, a pumpkin ale from Flying Dog Brewery (Ironwood, Twisted Jimmy’s), goes light on the pumpkin and its bitterness may also appeal to those with less of a sweet tooth. But back to the sweet stuff. Southern Tier Pumking (on draft at Benjamin’s, Ironwood, Twisted Jimmy’s),
is very sweet with a taste of graham cracker crust. At the other end of
Southern Tier’s fall spectrum, try their earthy but citrusy Harvest Ale. Fans of pie and Belgian whites will like Harpoon’s UFO Pumpkin (on draft at Benjamin’s). Unfiltered and hazy in appearance, it too will remind you of you-know-
what. Other brews to consider include: Ithaca’s Country
Pumpkin Ale and Long Trail Harvest Ale. Let’s close this month with a detour to Philly and Pynk from Yards Brewing (on draft at Ironwood). A super-fruity raspberry ale, reminiscent of a wine cooler. For the more manly, Yards offers its “generously hopped” Cape of Good Hope imperial pale ale. Again, as always, what’s not on tap can be found in bottle shops.
