Denny Cline may not carrythe official title of Gremlins ten-nis head coach — even thoughhe’s outlasted three of them dur-ing the program’s four-year exis-tence — or be credited tobringing tennis to Sacred Heart.The final decision was OK’d byprincipal Mark Register, butdon’t be mistaken about who theheartbeat of the young programis.The 49-year-old Sedalia na-

tive, whose day job is warehousereceiving group leader at Gard-ner Denver, eats, drinks andlives tennis in the spring, servingas volunteer assistant coach forthe Gremlins tennis team.But before delving into

Cline’s influence on a programthat has finished a collective 16-5 the last two seasons, advancedto regional play in 2010 and hada state qualifier in two of itsthree campaigns, his devotion tothe sport must first be under-stood. And for that he can thankhis son, former all-state tennisstar Alex.Before the birth of Alex — a

2010 graduate of Sacred HeartSchool and now a collegiateplayer at the St. Louis College ofPharmacy — Cline knew little tonothing about the game.Cline never touched a tennis

racket growing up. Instead, hisathletic prowess was confined tothe hardwood at Smith-CottonHigh School, where he started asguard under Willie Jenkins untilgraduating in 1980.“Basketball is what I played

— loved it,” said Cline. “I nevereven thought about tennis grow-ing up.”At least until Alex became

enamored with the sport in thelate 1990s as a 7-year-old bud-ding talent.“My background in tennis?

None,” Cline said. “I recognizedAlex wanted to play tennis andpicked up the racket with him. Ilearned with him.”“Alex became a (United

States Tennis Association) kid,started playing around 7 or sowith the (Sedalia) parks and recand coach (Steve) Schilb andRod Davis during the summers.Then Tom Cunningham and mestarted working with him.”So what gave Cline the au-

thority or experience to helpteach his son tennis, a game henew little about for the first fourdecades of his life?“We took Alex for what I

want to say two to three monthsto Woodside Academy in KansasCity for professional lessons,and I just watched that guy whowas teaching Alex the properway to serve, the ins and outs ofthe backhand and forehand, andI saw how he handled the kidsand talked to them. I just kind ofbrought that back to Sedalia.”While Alex flourished on the

USTA junior circuit, his future intennis hit a snag as he enteredSacred Heart, which, like everyother school in the KaysingerConference, didn’t offer tennis.“We had contemplated at one

time going to Smith-Cotton be-cause Alex swam for Joe Arbisithrough the Bandits, and he was

a top-notch swimmer, so hecould have done both swimmingand tennis,” Cline said. “Wechose to stay, however, becauseof the academics and more of aone-on-one type deal at SacredHeart, which we felt had betterstudies.”But that doesn’t mean Cline

was resigned to let his son’s tal-ents on the tennis court go towaste without a fight.“Let’s go back at least five

and a half years, about a yearand a half before the team cameabout,” Cline said. “I was on theschool board and we wanted tobring some new sports at thetime. We brought up swimmingand tennis, but we talked and wethought this isn’t going to hap-pen. But Mark Register ap-proached us one day and said,‘You know what, I think we’regoing to get this tennis teamgoing.’ That really surprised us.”In their first year, the Grem-

lins posted a winning record, anda lot of that success can be at-tributed to Cline who, becauseonly a Sacred Heart teachercould assume the head coachingrole, had the task of workingwith multiple players who hadnever before held a racket.“It was natural that I step in

to help,” Cline said. “My rolefrom day one has been to basi-cally to work with the kids,teach them the fundamentals andget them prepared for matchplay while the head coach isthere to run the ins and outs ofwhat it takes with scheduling,communicating with othercoaches and the behind-the-scenes stuff.”It’s been an everyday com-

mitment for Cline, who has pro-vided stability for a programthat’s had three coaches in fouryears. Register understands thatit’s because of Cline’s dedicationthat the program has been able tothrive.“We really couldn’t have

done this without Denny,” hesaid. “While we’ve had somegreat folks help the program andtake over head coaching duties,Denny’s been here from the be-ginning and has lent all the ex-pertise to it. ... He’s been a greatasset and him continuing withthe program speaks volumesabout his character.”With Alex graduating two

years ago, Cline could have beenlike most parents in taking a lesshands-on approach and support-ing the program from afar. ButCline’s involvement is aboutcontinuing a tradition he’s heldclose to his heart since the inau-gural team stepped on the tenniscourts in March 2009.“It’s too much fun — love to

do it,” Cline said.So how long does he expect

to stay on as assistant coach?“As long as they’ll have me,

I’ll be there,” Cline said. “Justgoing around the kids, whenthey see me they’ll say, ‘Are yougoing to coach this year, coachCline? Are you going to coachthis year, coach Cline?’ So it’skind of like, how can you sayno?”
