Evergreen Garden Club September 2019
Greetings fellow gardeners! The dog days of summer are coming to an end and the gardeners are out harvesting their vegetables and enjoying the last few warm days in their gardens. Now is the time to enjoy the fruits of our labor. The weeds have slowed down, things aren’t growing quite as quickly, and the evenings and mornings are crisp and perfect for puttering around in the yard. How long will it take before that first frost?
Our Club planned a special trip in early August to tour Prairie Gardens in Bon Accord and Sandy Acres, the permaculture farm set up by our past member and her husband, Deb and Eugene Wiwchar. Members enjoyed a train ride, a succulent garden planting, a delicious field-to-plate meal from Prairie Gardens before a joyful reunion with Deb and a very educational, personalized tour of Sandy Acres. Thank you to both of these places from all of us at the Evergreen Garden Club for a very entertaining day. Members learned about the benefits of free-growing gardens, charcoal, food preservation and self-sustenance. Everyone left with a new appreciation for growing your own food. A special thanks to our bus driver and honorary member-for-the-day, Amanda Gizowski, who got us there and back safely.
The Club had a general meeting August 19th at the hall. We discussed our plans for the fall and made some decisions regarding our upcoming meetings. Members are beginning to buzz about our 20th Anniversary next year. In July 2020, the Evergreen Garden Club will have been operating here for two entire decades. Stay tuned for your invitation to come and celebrate with us!
Are you looking for something fun to do once a month that involves dirt and flowers and friends? We are a welcoming group eager to share our love of growing things in Evergreen with young and old. Whether you’re just dreaming of gardening or are already the caretaker of a perennial paradise, we’d love to get to know you. Call or text Cori at 780-860-3582 for more information about the Club and how you can be a part of it, or just show up on September 16th and check us out for yourself! The Garden Club is open to anyone who loves growing, age 12 and up.
Join the club, meet new friends, share a few laughs, and go home feeling good.

We are however a part of Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL) If you are interested in lending a hand let us know! Maybe there is a position that peaks your interest or maybe you have a bit of time to help at one of our events or programs we offer! You can contact us! Every little bit counts whether it be an hour at an event, running a program or a full board position; all time donated is appreciated.
People get involved in their local communities for all types of reasons. Being actively involved in your community is not only about giving, even if that is your main motivation. For most people, it’s an exchange of skills, knowledge, and experience that can benefit everyone. Anyone can get involved. It doesn’t matter who you are, how old you are, what you believe in; there are contributions you can make that will make a difference. What you get in return is both priceless and invaluable whatever stage of life you are at:
• Influencing change in your Community or local area, making it a better place to live – developing new ideas and approaches together that people can take pride in.
• Building confidence, self-esteem and giving structure to life – young, old, there are many people that need to develop a sense of self-worth.
• Meeting new people – building new friendships, reducing isolation and loneliness, developing ideas together.
• Involvement also shows other generations, and the greater community, the importance of building a stronger community.
• Make a difference in your community, make friends, gain a better understanding of the neighborhood you live in.
