South Korea is the third trip to a WinterOlympics for our local duo – having alsorepresented Team GB at Vancouver in2010 and Sochi in 2014. But theirachievement in 2018 was all the moreastonishing because it was only in June2016 that Penny smashed her rightkneecap into eight pieces after a seriousfall. The major knee surgery that followedthreatened to bring her skating career toa premature end. But “grit, resilience anddetermination” have seen Penny fight herway back to the top of the sport alongsideWilford’s Nick Buckland – her partner onand off the ice.In a message to their fans, Penny said:“Sometimes things don’t go the way youwant them to – the last year and a halfhas definitely taught me that… But I havealso learnt that beauty blooms inadversity. After I broke my knee, duringmy road to recovery I envisioned what myOlympic Moment would be, and while Iam so proud of what Nick and I put outthere, the result wasn’t what I had hopedfor.“I wanted to be an inspiration for youngpeople around the world and I am sograteful that the Olympic stage allowedme to share my story and to inspire thenext generation. I am deeply humbled bythe overwhelming amount of messages Ireceived, and I want to say thank you toyou all for making my Olympic Momentso special, and for making me feel soproud… and to me, that’s beautiful.”Whatever happens next, our local paircan be immensely proud of all they’veachieved!Graham Wright via RUDDINGTON.info

U3A is coming to RuddingtonThe University of the Third Age (U3A) islaunching a new group in Ruddington onMonday 19th March at 2pm at theMethodist Church on Charles Street. The meeting will be informal, with tea, coffee and biscuits provided.U3A stands for “University of The ThirdAge,” where retired and semi-retiredpeople make new friends, keep activeand learn together. Of course it's not auniversity in the usual sense. It’s auniversity of life. Our members areolder people who’ve had years ofexperience in work and education, andnow that we’ve retired from all that, theU3A is a way of using this knowledge forour own enjoyment. Each local U3A is a

charity run entirely by its own volunteermembers, but we’re all part of anational organisation providingeducational, cultural and socialopportunities for people who areretired or not in full-time employment. There have been U3As inNottinghamshire for over 30 years. There are currently 28 U3As inNottingham and Nottinghamshire. Theidea for a U3A in Ruddington was firstsuggested by local residents who hadjoined U3As outside the village. At U3A, we share learning, fun andfriendship in a vibrant, enjoyable andvaried way. Members suggest andorganise interest groups in a widevariety of subjects, both educationaland social. Most U3As have a widerange of groups from walking to tripsand visits, gardening to reading, theatreto tea dancing, badminton to science. No qualifications are required and noneare given. So come along and learn all about us! Ifyou enjoy making new friends, thestimulation of learning new things andpassing your knowledge on to others, you'll be made very welcome.

End of Ruddington FunIn summer 2010, I started “Summer Fun inRuddington”, which provided FREEholiday play activities in our village. Thiswas only possible with the support of SureStart, Georgina Ratcliffe, who worked forus2gether (a project that supportedschools’ extended services) and the ParishCouncil. The response to the sessions was amazingand residents asked for more.Consequently, I put out a plea forvolunteers and in February 2011, seven ofus met and “Ruddington Fun” wasformed. Our aim was to: “Provide, either directlyor through partnership with otherorganisations, school holiday activitiesand events for children, young people andfamilies within Ruddington.”Over the years we’ve provided a variety ofactivities. We’ve also included our“mature” residents on Older People’s Day,supported community events by providingcraft activities and even celebrated thevillage tradition of walking the wallaround St Peter’s Rooms to celebrate theOlympics in 2016!Our resources were funded by thegenerosity of our Borough and CountyCouncillors, the Co-op Local CommunityFund, East Midlands Airport, Veolia andthe Parish Council. The resources have also been loaned tovarious village events and organisations tomake use of.Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons,“Ruddington Fun” will no longer provide

activities. The main reasons are that myhealth is unpredictable and the othervolunteers have various work and familycommitments. When I started the concept there was verylittle happening in our community interms of play activities; now there is. Thisis proved by the entries in the diary ofactivities we produced each year.I will maintain our Facebook page to keepalerting families to what’s happening inthe locality.I would like to thank everyone who’ssupported us in any way and, in particular, the Parish Council for their help withproviding venues.I trust you have all had Fun inRuddington….and will continue to do so.Barbara Breakwell and the RuddingtonFun Team (past and present)

Revised Asher Lanehousing plans

Last December we reported how SpaceFoods Ltd had decided to appeal to thePlanning Inspectorate against RushcliffeBorough Council’s refusal to allow itoutline planning permission for 175 newhomes on Green Belt land it owns southof Musters Road – with access off AsherLane.

Those proposals were lodged in January2017 – after a previous application for250 houses on the same site waswithdrawn two years earlier. The Borough Council (RBC) refused thissecond application on three maingrounds:1) Noise. The developers didn’t indicatehow they would deal with the noisecoming from the Premier Pets’ Hotelkennels and the impact this would haveon residents.2) Location. The site is located within theGreen Belt, where development of thesize proposed is felt to be inappropriate.3) Traffic. RBC objected on the samegrounds as the Parish Council. It was feltthat the developers hadn’t provided

enough detail to effectively mitigate thepotential traffic problems that thedevelopment would cause.Ruddington residents’ groups,Ruddington Parish Council and manyindividuals also spoke out against theseoriginal plans via both the planningportal and social media. The PublicInquiry into RBC turning down outlineplanning permission is due to be held onTuesday 17th to Friday 20th April 2018.Meantime, it’s been revealed that, lastyear, Space Foods purchased 75 MustersRoad when it came up for sale, with aview to demolishing it. This wouldappear to be an attempt to mitigate theprevious traffic objections by gainingaccess via a new road from the north ofthe site instead.Vehicles would then have the option ofentering and exiting via Distillery Streetand Sandhurst Drive as well as going viaAsher Lane and Musters Road. Theoutline plans also promise pedestrianlinks, public open space, car parking, landscaping and drainage. The reference number for the latestSpace Foods application is18/00300/OUT. You can see full detailsof the revised plans and comment onthem at www.rushcliffe.gov.uk/planningandgrowth. You have untilThursday March 8th to do so.Graham Wright via RUDDINGTON.infoEditor’s Note: Even if you commented onthe original Space Foods application, you’ll need to comment again for yourviews to be considered in relation to thenew application.

Thoughtless dog owners,“we’re watching you”

A popular dog fouling campaign called“we’re watching you” is coming toRuddington this month, aimed at dogwalkers who don’t scoop the poop.Ruddington Parish Council has joinedforces with environmental charity KeepBritain Tidy in a bid to reduce dogfouling in key problem areas of ourvillage. The campaign sets its sights onirresponsible dog owners, with recentresearch showing that dog walkers aremore responsible and pick up after theirdogs when they think they’re beingwatched. In 2014, Keep Britain Tidy conducted acampaign pilot, funded by theDepartment for Environment, Food andRural Affairs (Defra), working with landmanagers across the country. This pilot saw an average reduction of46% in the levels of dog fouling, with upto 90% reduction in some areas since.Feedback suggests that dog foulingtends to occur at night time and duringthe months with shorter days, as somedog owners feel they can’t be seen“under the cover of darkness”.That’s why the “we’re watching you”signs are visible after dark, and useinnovative, state of the art materials to“glow in the dark”.The campaign is the first time this kindof material has been used on a poster.

Claire Dorans, Clerk to the ParishCouncil, said, “Feedback from residentshas told us that dog fouling is one of themain issues in Ruddington that they’dlike to see addressed.“The vast majority of dog owners areresponsible people, who habitually pickup after their dog and dispose of thepoo bags correctly, either in the nearestbin or by taking home to dispose of intheir own household bin.“We’re thrilled to be working withenvironmental charity Keep BritainTidy, and to be part of such a cuttingedge campaign. We hope Ruddingtonwill see the same great results as theother towns and villages that havealready signed up.”

No village car parkcharges…yet!

Ruddington residents, traders andvisitors won’t have to pay to use theChurch Street Car Park. That was thedecision reached unanimously byCouncillors at a full meeting ofRuddington Parish Council on Tuesday30th January. However that is not goingto be the end of the story…

Currently the only car parking chargesin Ruddington are at our Country Parkwhere new pay & display machines witha nominal £1 fee were introduced byRushcliffe Borough Council in theirvisitor car park last summer. With our increasing village population, the idea of fees being introduced by theParish Council was mooted as a way ofdiscouraging motorists from parking forlong periods in their village centre carpark, next to the Co-op.It’s been noted that on weekdays anaverage of fifteen spaces are beingtaken up by people leaving theirvehicles there all day – presumablywhilst they’re at work. It was suggestedto Councillors that drivers should still beallowed to park there for two hours forFREE – as in many of our village centre

streets – but that daytime chargescould be applied beyond that. Aminimum fee of £15 was proposed foranyone who wished to remain therebetween 6 and 8 hours as a deterrentfrom doing so! However this proposalwas rejected last night.Parish Council Chairman Allen Wood(pictured below) told RUDDINGTON.info: “It is recognised that the layout ofroads in Ruddington does not lend itselfto modern day car usage and locationslike Charles Street, Shaw Street andParkyn’s Street pose particulardifficulties for residents that own cars. The Councillors recognised that harddecisions will have to be taken and inprincipal accepted that some form ofcharging system for our car park may benecessary along with other measuresthat alleviate some of the residents’issues, therefore other options will beinvestigated and a report brought backto a future meeting.”

The decision will come as a relief todozens of Ruddingtonians – many ofthem village centre residents – whotook to social media to air their viewsbefore the Parish Council meeting.Graham Wright via RUDDINGTON.info

Little Seedlings says goodbyeOctober 2009 sawthe opening ofLittle SeedlingsChildcare by JaneGarner. Whatstarted out to bea small child-minding servicegrew very quicklyand by December2009, I wasinundated by

phone calls from parents looking forsomething a bit different from your usualchild-minder, but not as big as a nursery. So the search started for an assistant andSamantha Ellis (Sammy) was appointed inearly 2010.During the eight years that we’ve workedtogether, we’ve been fortunate to carefor 71 children, with the vast majority ofthem living in Ruddington. In 2016 we were ready and prepared forour Ofsted visit, the children werefantastic on the day and helped usachieve “OUTSTANDING”, in all areas –fantastic recognition for all the hard workwe put in each day.Unfortunately due to ill health I’vedecided that the time is right to finish andretire. Sam intends on returning to aposition in retail. So from Sam and myself, we thank you allfor the many years of support that you’veoffered us and we wish you all well for thefuture.Jane Garner

Volunteers wanted! The Framework Knitters Museum is a nationally renowned heritage site that’s atrue gem for us to have at the heart of our village. But the success of this popularand historic tourist attraction does rely very heavily on volunteers – and this iswhere they’re hoping villagers with a little spare time on their hands may comeforward to help. They’re currently asking for potential recruits to get in touch – with a chance tomake new friends, try something new and to gain experience in the heritagesector. Especially ifyou’re still looking foryour first job, or in-between employment, they emphasise what agreat addition to yourCV this would be!Trustee Faye Stensonexplains that they’reespecially keen to geton board individualswith an interest infundraising: “What wereally need are people with the skills and willingness to help with grant-writingapplications, organise fund-raising events, help with promotional activities andperhaps write letters to major donors. We have an expert fundraising consultanton board to provide training, so it’s a great opportunity to learn new skills and bepart of a team.”If that sounds like you, please contact Holly Batley for an informal discussion on0115 984 6914 or email her on [email protected] Wright via RUDDINGTON.info
