The Teen room this summer has been busy with almost daily games of Magic: The Gathering. MTG is a card game that uses a huge variety of characters, creatures, and strategies in two-person battles.

The summer reading program this year exceeded expectations, with record numbers set for all different age groups.

All told, about 320 children, teens, and adults participated by turning in completed reading slips or, in the case of the children, filling in portions of their reading logs for prizes. When you add in the people who attended various programs, including all age groups, our total rises to more about 500 people.

By far the biggest gains were among teens (103 percent) and children (33 percent).

We had 59 teens read 1,416 hours, which is the largest total by a longshot over the past seven years! Our four sessions in June drew an average of 25 teens each time.

There were 463 children signed up for summer reading, including 80 from several daycare/

Did You Know? Librarian Connie Norton oversees outreach by taking hundreds of paperback novels to local hotels, campgrounds, and other locations. Over the last year, Connie took 1,900 paperback books to the various locations. Our patrons took home another 1,900 from the library. If you have a place in mind you’d like to add to the list, please contact her at (307) 684-5546.

summer programs in Buffalo who attended Wednesday sessions. Of those, about 220 filled in reading logs that totaled 2,814 hours, about 700 more than last year. Average weekly attendance for the main programs on Thursdays was at least 120 children, with those numbers spiking during special events such as magician Cody Landstrom’s performance.

We had 42 adults take part, too, and they read more than 450 books. Though the number of adults participating has varied since 2006, that number of books is one of the highest years out of the past 13 years we’ve tracked the numbers.

Special thanks to the Friends of the Library for providing finances for prizes and snacks. Several businesses donated to the programs, so if you see a sponsorship poster in their window, or happen to visit with the individual and/or owners listed, below be sure to thank them!
