“What have you read that’s good?”

It’s one of the questions we often get when patrons have read through the authors with whom they’re familiar. Fortunately, we’ve got a great answer.

Circulation Librarian Heather Kuzara has assembled a stellar collection of favorite reads from all eight members of the JCL staff. It runs the gamut from romance to

Bonnie Ross, branch manager — Monica Brock — Kelley Davis We wanted to thank the Foundation for purchasing and helping to assemble the new book shelves in our children's section. They look great!

We will be reading a short story One Christmas by Truman Capote for our Monday, Jan. 7 book discussion. We will be watching the movie that goes with the story in December. Claim directly south of Major Verling and Juliet Hart’s claim. Upon final receipt in 1884, he platted the Carwile’s Addition to the City of Buffalo. The houses were constructed in 1884 on lots 1 and 2 of Block 19. A few years later, the Carwile family moved from Buffalo. The Carwile home was built on Lot 1 and it is the home that was missing - until I recently found it.

No answers came forward when I asked about the missing house mystery in the Buffalo Bulletin and on social media. I assumed that the home was most likely lost to a fire as house fires were common during those early years. Then, I read two different hand scribbled notes on photos with the house in the background. The person had noted there was a house facing Main St. that had been turned around to face High St. Hmmm, could this be the house that had peaked my curiosity? I quickly rode over to that neighborhood and searched on High St. and yes there was the house, turned around and moved west on Lot 1. Now having a stuccoed exterior, it does not look the same, but upon closer observation the house has the same bones as when the twins were built.

Next, I visited with Pearl in the Courthouse Records Department. I told her I needed proof before I started telling everyone about my turned around theory. She helped me trace the deeds back to the original owners. Sure enough, it is the same house, just turned around.

Why did someone take it upon themselves to turn around a huge house in

1917? Pearl and I determined that the year the one-way alley was built and the right-of-way easement took up much of the yard of Lot 1. So, we assume

this is why Mr. Van Houten (a sheep rancher) moved the house.

thrillers, history and children’s tales, with a dash of science-fiction and fantasy thrown in. You can pick up the brochure at the front desk, or download a copy at www.jclwyo.org. We’ll update it every so often with new titles because there’s just so many great books to choose from that if we listed them all we’d have a our own book!

AUCTION - Continued from Front Page New Cards Available

We still have plenty of new library cards for patrons who have lost or damaged their pink cards, or who would just like to switch to the new cards. These new cards are a much better fit for wallets, since they are the same size as a credit or debit card. They also come with a second part, which is a card that can be attached to a keychain. New cards are $1 each if you would like one to replace your old card. Patrons who are new to the library system do not need to pay the small fee.

items that included dinners at local establishments and works of art from local artists were auctioned.

The Johnson County Library Foundation, The Friends of the Library, the Library Trustees and Library staff wish to extend their thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s benefit auction a tremendous success – Larry & Eva Brannian, Dan & Debbie Gay, Jacob & Cristen Gay, caterer Margaret Fraley of Sagewood Café; Trinity Rodriguez/The Fix, Jon Williams of City Liquor, Kiwanis members, the spouses of staff and board members, and of course our wine servers –Danny & Jackie Powell, Mike & Connie Bacon, Barb Mueller, Sue Bisbee, Bill Novotny, and Lynne Turner.

Photographer Dave Stoetzel and his wife Debbie (a former JCL employee) have published this wonderful guide to photos they took in 2013 that recreated images of scenic locations recorded by Bighorn Forest Supervisor John Spencer in 1926. The “Magic Lantern” slides of the Headley collec-tion now reside in the Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum.
