Majority control o the US Sen-ate will hang precariously in the
balance on election night nextNovember.
While most eyes will be xedon the top o the ballot and Presi-dent Obamas reelection eort,
many political observers will bewatching Virginias Senate race
just as closely.Te Democratic majority inthe Senate is small. So many vul-

Republicans are equally deter-mined to capture Virginia andgain the powerul control theyneed to repeal President Obamasagenda.

tiring Senator Jim Webb. Allenis hoping that six years will helperase the memory o him makingan ethnically oensive commentat one o his rallies to a staerrom Webbs campaign. Beorethat misstep Allen had been pop-ular and distinguished enough tobe considered heavily or a Presi-dential run in 2008.
Te Democratic candidate isim Kaine, the ormer popularand moderate governor and or-mer chairman o the DemocraticNational Committee. His time atthe DNC and its close relation-ship with President Obama will
likely impact Kaine negatively inthe eyes o the moderate voterswho thought so highly o him asgovernor. However, his positionon abortion (Kaine is a vocallypro-lie Roman Catholic) shouldhelp him with the centrist inde-pendent voters that will decidethis race.
Te man at the top o the ballotwill have a mixed impact on therace. President Obamas namebeing directly above Kaines willlikely hurt the Democrats chanc-es to win Virginia, unless an un-likely dramatic improvement in
the economy and Obamas ap-proval numbers occurs. On the
other hand, Obama will be in-vesting a large amount o ground
resources to get the vote out, andObama voters will likely also vote
or Kaine. Particularly in North-ern Virginia, Obamas turnout e-
ort could give Kaine the edge heneeds to win.

Wayside Teatre, also in Mid-

In addition to a ull roster o
perormances, the theatre pro-
duces Emerging Artists Pro-

As many people know, the
Wayside Teatre issued an
urgent appeal during the dog
days o summer; they need to
raise $90,000 in 45 days or the
stage will go dark. Accord-
ing to Artistic Director War-

economy, loss o ticket sales,
and long- and short-term debt
combined to bring the Te-

junction.
As o uesday, the Teatre

he Sherando Warriorswalked into Arrowhead Sta-dium on Friday night beneaththe blazing lights with theirminds set on evening their re-cord at 1-1. Te Warriors hadwalked onto the same eld a
week beore and ater puttingup a valiant ight ell to theBulldogs o Martinsburg, thedeending AAA West Virginiastate champions. Tis week theWarriors were acing anotherWest Virginia team, the Mus-selman Applemen.
Te Applemen got o to agood start against Sherando, driving the ball down the eldand putting it in the endzoneon a drive that likely unsettledthe Warrior ans watching andhoping or a win. re Porter
put their minds at ease whenhe returned the ensuing kickoand danced and roared past theApplemen deenders or thetying touchdown.
From that point on it wasSherandos game to lose as theiroense, which had been stag-nant and scoreless the weekbeore, came to lie with explo-sive power as tailbacks Porter
and Joe Ojo oered a one-twopunch that the Applemen werepowerless to stop. Both Quar-terbacks Jalen Briscoe and ReidEnstminger were reliable and attimes spectacular.
At certain times it lookedlike the Applemen might comeback and their eort was cer-tainly commendable, as they
kept the game close enoughand showed enough ight tokeep the ans watching in the
stands. Even ater it becameclear they were headed or a
loss, the Applemen kept striv-ing and returned a kicko ora touchdown late in the game,a breakdown in special teamsthat the Sherando coacheswere clearly unhappy with.
he inal score when theclock reached triple zeros was49-21 in avor o the Warriors, giving them a gratiying winthat helped erase much o thebitterness rom last weeksheartbreaking deeat againstMartinsburg . he Warriorsshowed tremendous explosive-
ness on oense and played wellon deense ater initially break-ing on the opening drive o thegame. I any real weaknesswas ound in the Warriors onFriday night it was their specialteams, which allowed severalreturns or touchdowns by theApplemen.
Next week Sherando willtravel or their rst road gameat Washington high school, taking on yet another teamrom West Virginia. CertainlyCoach Bill Hall and his War-riors will expect and hope or asimilar oensive explosion thatFriday night as well.
