It has been another fantastic half term at Frederick Bremer, with our pupils taking part in

some incredible opportunities.

Our Year 11 pupils have started their GCSE exams this month, with many carrying on

into late June. Our Year 7-10 pupils will be starting their end of year exams in June, we

hope all of our pupils use their time to focus on being the best they can be.

In April, our extraordinary Creative Arts department showcased the incredible production

that was ‘Hairspray– The Broadway Musical’. We would like to thank everyone who was

involved in making the production so successful and all of our pupils involved, they made

the shows truly electric.

We have also had our first cohort complete their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. With

an average of 2% of pupils across London taking part in the Bronze Award, Frederick

Bremer has an outstanding 20% of Year 11 pupils taking part in this marvellous

opportunity. We look forward to seeing many more cohorts completing this esteemed

challenge.

I would also like to take this time to invite you to our GCSE Art Exhibition, which is taking

place on Tuesday 19th June from 4pm till 7pm, here at Frederick Bremer. This is a

fantastic occasion for our pupils to showcase their hard work over the year. We look

forward to seeing you on the day. We are also holding a Summer Music Concert on

Wednesday 20th June from 5.30pm, tickets will be available after half term, so keep your

eyes peeled for more information.

With the introduction of GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) coming into effect

on 25th May 2018, we would like to remind those who haven't returned their GDPR form,

that this is a requirement for every pupil in our school. To find out more information

please visit our website for further information. www.bremer.org.uk/gdpr

I hope you have a well-rested half term break, ready for another exciting half term to end

the year.

Attendance Matters

Thank you for your support in helping us improve attendance this year so far. The last 5 weeks of this half term have all seen attendance above 95% for the whole school bringing our attendance so far this year to 94.6% and rising. We still aim to get to and beyond 95% overall by the end of the year. Even letting attendance slip to 90% equates to 17.5 days of school and missing just 17 days of school still equates to roughly a lost grade across all subjects at GCSE – this really matters to your children’s futures.

As you can see the picture is an improving one and we are getting close to our goals. Well done and keep it up!

End of Year Exams

As we approach the end of the

academic year, our Year 7 – Year

10 pupils will be sitting their end of

year exams, which take place from

11th June to 28th June. Each pupil

will receive their timetable shortly.

Science Week

Science week was a huge success with space themed lessons taking place in History and English. In Science pupils were given the opportunity to make Universe slime and Vitamin C rockets. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The lunchtime dissections were a huge hit! Thanks to everyone that helped make the week such a success.

International Women In Engineering Day

INWED is an annual event dedicated to raise awareness of women in engineering careers. It takes place on June 23

rd and is a great opportunity to celebrate the

achievements of women engineers around the world, and to find out more about where engineering can take you. This year the theme is #RaisingTheBar.

We at Frederick Bremer will be celebrating this on the week beginning July 2nd

by doing different activities, assemblies and competitions, so keep your eyes open for more information!

Thinking outside the box

A select few of our Year 10s had the opportunity to visit Simmons & Simmons to take

part in an exclusive careers and skills workshop. Pupils took part in various activities that

will help them plan for the years ahead, furthering their education and career aspirations,

which varied from journalist to lawyer. To end the session, each group had to negotiate

against one another learning new skills and how to come up with creative solutions.

Making it into Music School

Two of our exceedingly talented pupils have recently been accepted into two very

competitive music schools.

One of our pupils said “Frederick Bremer has helped me develop my ensemble skills

through orchestra and playing at the annual MiSST concerts with various other

instruments” they also said that the best thing about our Music department is “the quality

of their lessons”.

Our other pupil attending music school also plays several instruments one being violin

and the other being piano which they started learning here at Frederick Bremer. When

asked how has Frederick Bremer helped you reach your goals, they said “it has helped

me to learn the piano and has given me lots of opportunities to do

concerts”. They also said “the teachers are extremely helpful and kind and

funny. We also have really good funding for instruments and musical

equipment”.

Congratulations to both who have achieved so much.

ABRSM Music Exams

Our extremely talented musicians took their

ABRSM exams earlier this term, on their

chosen instrument or in theory. All of our pupils

passed their exam and showed their

determination in mastering music.

Congratulations to all those who took part and

did a fantastic job!

Students raise money for MiSST in a Practic-a-thon!

To celebrate the 5th Anniversary of MiSST the students showed their appreciation and

enthusiasm by raising money.

Since 2013 MiSST has provided a fantastic opportunity for thousands of students to receive a classical music education that is of outstanding quality. Students practiced their instrument for 20 mins a day for 20 days.

We raised a total of £500. Thank you to all who were involved.

The following students raised the most money:

We would also like to thank Mrs Townsend-Elliot for her kind donation.

Hairspray the Musical

A huge congratulations to all the pupils who were involved in our school

production of Hairspray! The pupils showed massive amounts of

dedication and passion in learning their lines, conquering fears and

performing challenging musical melodies. The tech team was delightful

and the musicians really struck a chord! A big thank you to the PTA and

to Waltham Forest College Hair and Beauty Department for all the

support. We look forward to working with

them again in future. We will be

announcing the next show in September so

keep your eyes peeled for opportunities to

watch, listen or support Frederick Bremer’s

next big production!

Ms Paine presents Art and Maths at the William Morris Gallery

Teachmeet

The Art Department was given the opportunity to represent the school at the

Cultural Learning Teachmeet at the William Morris Gallery last month. Ms

Paine gave a passionate talk on the Maths and Art project as part of the

Creative Curriculum that she has been teaching this year and received some

very positive feedback and interest from the teachers and gallery staff as they

were not aware of any other schools combining subjects in such a creative

and positive way. It was a very inspiring event and will hopefully lead on to

further collaborations with additional creative outlets in the future.

‘We Are The Leaders we have been waiting

for’ Exhibtion of works at Gnome House

including 10 Frederick Bremer Students

We are very fortunate to have had 10 pieces of work accepted for this exhibition which opens on Saturday 2nd June. The event has been set up protesting violence against young people and the organisers were very keen to have work up by local young people as part of the exhibition. The pieces they have selected are from the current group of Year 10 students and are large self-portraits influenced by the impressionist style of painting and showcasing the skills learnt during this scheme of work. We look forward to putting photos of the event and the works in situ in the next newsletter. Please go and see the exhibition if you get a chance, just follow the link: http://gnomehouse.org.uk/we-are-the-leaders-we-have-been-waiting-for/

Central St Martin Workshops – Final

pieces to be unveiled

These will be exhibited for the first time at the 2018

GCSE Art Exhibition, 4-7pm on Tuesday 19th June.

This is a great opportunity for the Year 8 and Year 9

students who took part in these workshops to finally

see their work displayed – we really hope that all

these students and their family and friends can

come to the Exhibition to enjoy the results of the

collaboration with the UAL Insights programme at

this internationally renowned University.

Y11 Art Exam and announcement of Exhibition date

The Year 11’s have completed their unit 2 Art GCSE during a 10 hour exam in the art

rooms. They continued to impress with their use of varied media and level of focus

which led onto some really exciting outcomes. Here are a few small teaser images –

come to the Exhibition on Tuesday 19th June 4-7pm to see the full size pieces along

with their other units and sketchbook works. Also at the Exhibition will be some Year

10 work and the outcome of the ceramic workshops with Central St Martins. Please

put the date in your diary and we look forward to welcoming you then.

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze

Award

A huge congratulations to our first

cohort to complete the Bronze

Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Frederick Bremer had over 20% of

our current Year 11s take part in

this esteemed challenge, with the

average being 2% across London.

Our pupils took part in various

tasks such as volunteering,

numerous team sports and of

course the bewildering mission of

trekking around Epping Forest.

Happy Birthday MiSST!

This April, our MiSST pupils had the opportunity

to play at London Palladium as part of MiSST’s

fifth birthday concert. Our pupils were lucky to be

one of ten schools performing in this wonderful

venue for a brilliant milestone. One of our pupils

was also awarded MiSST’s Musician of the year,

receiving a cello that was presented by Andrew

Lloyd Webber. A huge round of applause for our

pupils who represented Frederick Bremer at this

remarkable event.

Vegetarian Week

Recently we held our first vegetarian

week with the help from the National

Vegetarian Society who gave the

school a grant of £200. Our students

were exceptionally enthusiastic to be

creating new dishes they haven't tried

before, this included beetroot burgers

and falafel. Everyone who took part

said they really enjoyed learning

about new types of food and were

more likely to try vegetarian food in

the future.

Revision Tips

Make a list of what subjects and information you need to know.

Try to identify gaps in your knowledge.

Find a quiet place to revise, where noise and disruption is kept to a minimum.

Avoid studying for long periods of time without a break as this can cause information overload.

When revising highlight key facts and information that you need to know.

Make sure you get enough sleep as this will help you to concentrate when you are studying.

Think about what you are learning and try to answer practice questions as you go as this will help you remember more information

Break subjects down into manageable chunks and plan study time.

Give more time to topics you have difficulty with or where your knowledge is weaker.

Start early - Plan to start your revision well in advance of any exam

and do not leave it all to do the day before. You will remember a lot

more if you work in ‘small chunks’ over a longer timescale than if you

try to ’cram’ it all in the last few hours.

Switch off your phone - When you get into the ‘zone’ of revision then

the last thing you want is to be interrupted by a unimportant phone call

or text message.

Use books or targeted revision sites rather than surfing the

internet - If you are in the habit of using the internet to revise then

there is a real risk of falling into bad habits and wasting time by

checking your Facebook / MSN accounts, or being side-tracked by

games – save these activities for your relaxation time.

Think positively - Try to adopt a positive attitude that says ‘I can do this’. Do not lose motivation do so because of the amount of information you need to learn. Think about why you are doing all this work and what you want to achieve as a consequence.

Eat sensibly - For maximum performance your body and mind needs fuel to be able to concentrate and focus. By eating nutritious and healthy foods (i.e. fruit and vegetables) you can keep your energy levels high which will help you to remain focused throughout your revision.

Relaxation time - When you are planning your revision make sure you have some relaxation and fun time every day. Have set breaks at certain times where you make a drink and think about or do something else. Taking your mind off studying for short periods of time can help you to stay fresh and stop information overload.

Show My Homework

In an effort to keep parent/carers as informed as possible we have been making more

use of some features on Show My Homework.

By downloading the SMH app on your smartphone you can also sync your child’s

homework calendar and school notifications to your phone calendar, allowing you to

keep fully informed of events at school.

Please also be aware we have begun a trial whereby we notify you of detentions set for

homework that has not been completed. We are trialling this with the Maths department.

You will only receive such notifications if your child fails to complete homework on time;

these detentions will all be of a duration of 20 minutes. Notifications will appear on your

SMH account as a comment from a particular piece of homework.

Therefore, we ask that you regularly check your Show My Homework parent account for

notifications of events, and comments regarding detentions. If you have not already set

up your SMH parent account, you can find your activation PIN on your School Gateway

account in the ‘Assessment’ section under ‘Pupil Passwords’.

Please note that for head of year and senior leadership team detentions, we

will continue to send emails through School Gateway.

School Gateway

Please ensure you regularly access your School Gateway account. We will shortly

be sending the third academic report of the year, and without an activated Gateway

account, you may not be able to access this document.

If you are having trouble logging in, it may be because the School doesn’t have

your current email address and mobile number in our database. Please contact the

reception on 020 8498 3340 or [email protected] and we’ll update

your details.

School Gateway is a great way for parent/carers to keep up to date with what’s

going on at school and help you monitor your child’s academic progress and

conduct.
