SECONDARY SCHOOL APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM (SSA) Work Experience

Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) is an educational program supported by the Ministry of Education and the Industry Training Authority (ITA). Students in this program must have a full-time or part-time job in one of the ITA recognized trades (see www.itabc.ca, click on “Apprenticeship and Red Seal Programs”) and have an employer who is willing to indenture the student. A student in this program, upon successful completion, will receive a total of 18 credits towards graduation. Students must first complete the 2-credit Introduction to Secondary School Apprenticeship Course. They will then receive 4 course credits for every 120 hours worked in the trade, up to 480 hours or a total of 16 credits. The course credits are earned by hours logged through the ITA, and course work submitted to the SSA teacher/coordinator are for Secondary Apprenticeship (SSA) 11A, 11B, 12A, and 12B. A detailed description of each component is included in the course calendar. In addition, upon successful completion of the SSA program students may qualify for the SSA $1000 scholarship.

Introduction to Secondary School Apprenticeship 11 (SSA 11 Intro) Online or Paper Code: YSEVC11 Credits: 2 Prerequisite: 15 years old/Grade 10 This is a 2-credit course that will help students understand what apprenticeship is all about and how it can benefit the student. The main purpose of this course is to introduce the future apprentice to the Industry Training Authority (ITA), which is the governing body for industry training, certification, and standards for the province of BC. Also, it will give the student some insight as to whether the trade option is an appropriate career choice. By investigating and researching the various apprentice trades, students will discover the many trade options open to them. Secondary School Apprenticeship 11A Online or Paper Code: SSA11A Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend YSEVC11 This is a 4-credit course and a continuation of the Secondary School Apprenticeship program. This course involves some course work combined with work experience. It is expected that students will have secured a sponsor and are working in an apprentice trade while in this program. Students will be registered with the Industry Training Authority (ITA) during this time. Students will also participate in an interview process with a trade advisor or panel to confirm their commitment to the program. Once students have logged 120 hours of work experience with the ITA and have submitted the appropriate forms, they will receive 4 credits that can be used towards graduation. Secondary School Apprenticeship 11B Online or Paper Code: SSA11B Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Recommend SSA11A This is a 4-credit course and a continuation of the Secondary School Apprenticeship program. The apprenticeship program is designed with practical work experience in mind. In this course the student will complete the 120 hours of work experience and the required forms. Once students have logged 120 hours of work experience with ITA and have submitted the appropriate forms, they will receive 4 credits that can be used towards graduation.

This course completes the apprenticeship program. Work Experience (WEX) 12A Online or Paper Code: WEX12A Credits: 4 Prerequisite: None The work experience program offers students a unique opportunity to work in local businesses and industry as part of their school day and course work. Work experience is a supervised and monitored program that includes a combination of paid or unpaid work along with some course work and assignments. Up to 8 credits can be earned for WEX 12A and WEX 12B (4 credits each). Students can choose to do only 1 of the WEX 12 courses, or both WEX 12A and WEX 12B. Students that choose to enroll in WEX 12 are required to complete some written assignments, but the majority of their course requirements are completed in work experience placements. Students select one area of study in which they focus their attention. Students should consult with their career advisor for more information about focus areas. For each component you will be required to complete 90 hours of community-based work placements in your chosen focus area to receive 4 credits towards graduation.
