The European Gravitational Observatory
PURPOSE• The Consortium shall have as its purpose the promotion of research
in the field of gravitation in Europe. • In this connection and in particular, the Consortium pursues the
following objectives:– ensures the end of the construction of the antenna VIRGO, its
operation, maintenance and the upgrade of the antenna as well as its exploitation;
– ensures the maintenance of the related infrastructures, including a computer centre and promotes an open co-operation in R&D;
– ensures the maintenance of the site;– carries out any other research in the field of gravitation of common
interest of the Members;– promotes the co-operation in the field of the experimental and
theoretical gravitational waves research in Europe;– promotes contacts among scientists and engineers, the dissemination of
information and the provision of advanced training for young researchers.

Eddy currents noise?
Noise budget P0=8W, no TCS
Some technical noises expected to go down with TCS laser power increase
Many environmental noises and control noises below 50 Hz are at the level of the Virgo design (magnetic and diffused light not shown here)
could explain a large fraction of the noise at low frequency
Shutdown works: see results at restart
Eddy currents noise (if any) will be reduced with smaller magnets

Monolithic suspensions (Det talk)
• A new “ear” and attachment design allows to produce good fibers with a simple structure
• Will test the full procedure on a mirror• Provided LF technical noise is controlled,
there is a factor 30 in rate for NSNS coalescences adopting the monolithic suspensions
• Trade off study between science return and downtime of the monolithic installation in late 2009/early 2010. – monolithic suspension open the range of low frequencies to
observations of periodic sources. – shutdown and re-commissioning reduce common observation
time with LIGO, limiting its impact
• Very valuable experience with a central element of AdvVirgo.

• Mirror was coated, equipped and suspended• Back in the NE tower • First beams back in the full interferometer today• Expected not to happen again (in Advanced Virgo)!
