LOOKING AT LIGHTING

Page 2: Fran filipa luke, ben, paolo, ryan

I think this picture is interesting because the use of lighting makes it seem like the girl in the picture has no eyes, it makes her look extremely sinister. The lighting is off to her left, maybe slightly behind to create this effect. The sockets of the eyes are almost empty using this lighting state and the face is sharply divided in two.

This picture’s use of lighting gives an effect of speed, as the long camera exposure and the movement of the car makes the lights cross and blur. The separate colours remain distinct but the lines lengthen and lose focus at the edges.

The lighting in this picture is mainly natural lighting, but it creates an effect of confusion and wonder for whoever is looking at it. There is no clue as to who the girl is in the picture. The onlooker / photographer appears to be hiding in a dark corner or nook while the girl is in the full glare of the sunlight, unaware. The strong backlighting makes the girl’s features indistinguishable.

This pictures is backlit, and the use of of backlighting makes the girl almost a silhouette. The edges of her body are picked out meaning she pops out from the dark background and we can see the sides of her face more clearly.

The way the lighting obscures half of the person’s face creates a sense of enigma. Also the red filter makes the image feel distorted and dangerous. The direction of the gaze is also significant – we wonder where she is looking or who she is looking at.

The darkness under this person’s face makes him look mysterious because you can only the top half of his face is visible. You can’t see if the person is smiling or frowning because you can’t see their mouth and this creates quite a creepy and intimidating feeling.

In this picture the lighting used is natural light as it could be take through a blind. It seems to be hinting that someone may be trying to hide, which creates a creepy feeling about the picture. The picture is also effective as we are unsure what he is looking at in the picture. The stripes on the face created by the slats on the blind work well for dramatic effect – the lighting is so bright we do not feel they will be able to hide for very long.

The lighting in this picture is coming from the right hand side. Due to it being taken in a dark room, half of her face is therefore cast into shadow. By the way she has done her makeup and how she is posing, this makes her look unnatural – the strong lighting contributes to the look of a posed or staged shot. This picture is made more intense due to her looking directly into the camera lens.

This picture is designed to look creepy as it is lit slightly from beneath the face. This angle of lighting can make anyone look disturbing as it tends to cast dark shadows under the eyes and highlight unusual features like the lower lip. This picture is made to look even weirder due to the person in the picture being a mannequin.

In this disturbing picture, the majority of the lighting is back lighting however there is a small amount on the left side of his face. This is done because if it was solely back lighting you wouldn’t be able to see his face. This creates a very sinister look and show his face and the weirdness of the picture.

In these pictures the lighting comes through from the natural lighting source. It is a very strong light which makes us focus more on the object that the light is beaming on. They both have a very good use of the rule of thirds as our eye is not drawn to the centre.

In these images, the light beaming through the trees lead the viewer’s eyes through out the woods from one side to another because as it is positioned at one corner it makes us follow it to see what is further on. Also they use a lot of shadows and rays which is very effective because it can either look spooky or fantastical.

In these images the light that is used from underneath makes the children look sinister and evil. Their facial expressions help a lot to but as they are right in the middle of the image and the light to, our focus goes right onto it.

• The blue light makes the person seem isolated and alone. This is highlighted by the black background behind them. The light could be reflected from some kind of screen, but it is brighter and more widespread than we might suspect. We feel she is reacting to something she is watching on this screen.

• The lighting in the photo makes the person look like they are walking away from their past. The slightly sepia tones hint at a past life and the use of backlighting to create a silhouette has an air of finality about it.

The lighting in this photo is coming from underneath her face but its also coming from in front of her as you can see it is reflected into her eyes. This lighting makes the girl look sinister as there is a lot of shadowing around the eyes and there is shadowing on her cheek bones. The bright glare in front also whites out the lower part of her face.

In this photo the lighting is coming from the bottom but also from in front of her. This person covered most of their face with their hair and as their hair is dark it blended in with the darkness from the background so you can only see her face. The minimal amount of light on her face makes her look slightly evil but also vulnerable because she’s covering her face and it almost looks like it’s a form of protection. It creates an evil atmosphere which gives us the impression she’s about to get attacked.
