Dear Friends, “It is easier for a father to have children than for children to have a real father.” St. John XXIII St. John had a father’s sense of being a pope, perhaps because of his own father, Giovanni. He took his father’s name when he became pope. As time proved, the world needed him to be not only the Holy Father, a “real father.” At a time when the division between the communist East and the democratic West was at its worst, Pope John welcomed the son-in law of the Soviet Premier, Nikita Khrushchev, to the Vatican. It was this spirit that helped resolve the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Kennedy and Khrushchev, on the brink of war, trusted the pope when he urged both leaders to work for the larger good of world peace. What is there about a father that makes those who are fathers so important? Good Pope John captures three of those qualities. One of them is a care for what their children can be. John XXIII was supposed to be a short- term leader, one too old to make much of a real difference. Instead, he knew that the Church had to rise to the challenges of the modern world. He called for the Second Vatican Council and challenged it to “open the windows” on that world. He believed it was the Spirit that inspired our potential to meet others with the power of the gospel. He once said to some Vatican officials, which could be applied to fathers as well: "We are not on earth to guard a museum, but to tend a blooming garden full of life." A second quality of fatherhood that Pope John exemplified was this: the humility not to take himself or his role too seriously. He once noted…”Anybody can be pope. The proof of that is that I have become one!” On a deeper level, John understood that he was a servant of the truths we discover in life, not their controller. He dedicated his time as pope to working for the union of the Christian churches. He also knew that one step to achieve this was to find clearer ways to express the gospel and to dialogue with those who differ with us rather than condemn them. He had the humility to know that he had to prayerfully rely on Christ, not simply on his own ideas. He once woke up asking: "Angelo, why aren't you sleeping? Who's running the church, you or the Holy Spirit? So sleep." Fathers, too, need to be men of prayer, conscious that the Lord has made them servants of the growth of their children, to listen for the Spirit in their kids’ desires not to simply control them. Finally, as his role in the missile crisis revealed, John had a powerful grasp of the big picture. Fathers need such a grasp if they, with their wives, are to lead us. John XXIII wasn’t afraid to call the powerful to their He did this in the missile crisis, obviously. He also did it in his two great encyclicals: Mater et Magistra and Pacem in Terris. In the first, he argued for a more just economic system based on our shared rights as human beings. In the second, he urged nations to build a world order that paid attention to that common humanity so that mutual trust could be the basis of peace rather than a reliance on a balance of weapons of mass destruction. Fathers today need to keep in mind the bigger pictures of their families and the wider communities in which we all live. They need, like Pope John, to be men of reflection. Rather than mouthing the latest sound bites we need to hear the wisdom of Christ from them. That wisdom is nurtured weekly in the Eucharist, where the big picture of our shared communion in Him is experienced rather than that of a divided world. Fatherhood isn’t easy. With motherhood, it is essential though. Happy Father’s Day, dads! Love, Fr. Joe

    STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

    12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“He said to them, ‘Why are you afraid? Have

you no faith?’” – Mark 4:40

Most of us like to be in control. Loss of

control makes us fearful. Try changing your

perspective, let God be the pilot! There’s an

old saying “do you want to make God laught?

Tell him your plans.” Put your trust in God,

He always has a better plan!

Thank You…. My sincere thanks to all: parishioners,

staff, Frs. Joe & Colin, who made the

    celebration of my anniversary, memorable

and meaningful. I really appreciate all the

work that went into making the event

possible. Thank you for your friendship.

May God bless you for all you do for

    St. Anne’s. Fr. Jeremiah McGinley

  • Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we

become ever more truly the People of God.

    Fr. Jeremiah McGinley, ofm

We’re always hearing about an important date in history, on the news or online. Here we

have someone in our midst, celebrating one of those big dates: Fr. Jeremiah!

Sixty years ago, in 1955, Fr. Jeremiah McGinley was ordained a Franciscan Priest. During

his years, he had many different missions, but we all know him from his time here with us at the

Parish of Saint Anne. It would be amazing to try to count how many Masses he’s said here, how

many weddings celebrated, babies baptized and funerals presided over, in addition to visits to

the school or parish events attended! We do know that we are so happy that Fr. Jeremiah is still

here with us on weekdays and weekends, continuing to celebrate the Eucharist and preach the

    Good News! Congratulations, Fr. Jeremiah!!!

  • 10 Years and Counting ….. Can you believe it’s been 10 years since Fr. Joe & Fr. Colin first arrived here at Saint Anne Parish??? This time together has gone so quickly! As we see parishioners each and every day, we constantly hear them say “How lucky we are!” Everyone knows that transitions and changes are not often easy, but both Fr. Joe and Fr. Colin arrived with their grace and charm, and quickly eased their way into our hearts. They have been part of the entire fabric of the parish since their arrival in 2005, to the point where many almost feel they’ve been here even longer than 10 years! We want to tell them that we sincerely appreciate the partnership they have developed with all of us here at Saint Anne Parish, and acknowledge what a joy it’s been having them here with us this last decade.

along with other fees and donations totaled $17,566.00. Our weekly expenses average out to $21,026.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!

    Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a

light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.

    OR

    2. From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says

“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear. Select

the Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.”

When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations.

Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
