The catalog at hand presents the Plan Star Revolution Series of SAE output mount motors and gearbox com-
binations. This range has been developed by skilled technicians with years of experience in planetary gear
design and was meant to be an evolution to already existing products on the world market. As the design
came together and the initial units were assembled, the Engineers at Plan Star quickly came to realize their
evolution in planetary gear technology was more of a revolution. Plan Star Revolution Series provides features
others can’t o! er.

dimensions with older designs, thus allowing for easy replacement where interchangeability with older units
is a must.
Innovative Design
The Plan Star Revolution Series consists of a complete range of units. We can o! er many di! erent sizes with
torque output up to 6,600 lb-ft. The ratios o! ered can range from 3:1 to over 1700:1, with a fully modular struc-
ture. the units can be supplied with or without a brake, and with many di! erent shaft options. These units o! er
a compact design and extremely high e# ciency (up to 98.5%). All gearing is heat treated to obtain the best
performance and e# ciency. This is supplemented with close tolerances on all components, as well as $ oating
planet carriers for even load sharing. Spline pro" le gears, all roller bearing design, and large diameter shafts
contribute to the quiet operation of the unit. This and many other features distinguish Plan-Star assemblies
from the competition. We start where others not even arrive!
Crankshaft Design Radial Piston Motors
The main characteristics of this type of motor are high mechanical e# ciency, especially at start-up, and high
volumetric e# ciency. Interchangeable parts enable motors to be built that are tailored to the customer’s
speci" c needs. A number of features distinguish SAI motors from other radial piston designs. The design of the
radial motor with the crankshaft and oscillating cylinders provides very high starting torque e# ciencies as well
as other advantages.
Swivelling Cylinder
The cylinder (1) remains aligned with the eccentric path of the crank (3), eliminating side loading between the
cylinder and the piston (2). The articulation of the cylinder-piston assembly is achieved with large diameter
trunnions (4) which ensure low speci" c loads. Larger trunnions (12) increase their strength and sti! ness while
reducing speci" c loads. Larger Trunnions also allow Hydraulic balancing(13), which reduces friction, wearing
and heat generation. This enables operation using higher pressures and speeds.

Double Piston Support Bearing
The pistons transmit their load to the shaft via a hydrostatic bearing (5) and a central roller bearing. The
hydrostatic bearing reduces metal to metal contact ensuring optimal lubrication and low friction. The roller
bearing minimizes the friction between the piston and the spherical piston support ring, reducing heat and
wear while improving low speed operation and starting torque. The mechanical e# ciency of the SAI motor is
typically higher than 90% at 400 bar (5800 psi).
Piston Retaining Rings
The piston retaining rings (7) ensure that the piston remains in contact with the shaft in all operating
conditions. The retaining force counteracts the separating force continuously, thus preventing lifting, tilting,
or hammering of the piston during cavitation. This also helps extend the life of the motor as well as reduce
the noise generated. SAI motors are extremely quiet. The noise level can be reduced further by using a back
pressure of 5 - 10 bar (70 - 145 psi) on the motor. Please note that pressure lines and motor support structures
can propagate or even amplify the sound from the motor.
Rotary Axial Distributor
Optimal distribution is achieved with short ducts that have wide diameters in the rotary axial distributor (8).
This reduces the power loss when high $ ow rates are present and achieves high volumetric e# ciency. Precision
machining and high performance seals provide optimal functionality thought the life of the motor as well
as protecting against thermal shock. The distributor housing (9) is interchangeable, providing a wide range
of pressure ratings, port sizes, and $ ow control options. The motors are available, on request, with a special
distributor which ensures silent working conditions. A radial cylinder injection feed eliminates direct hydraulic
axial loading of the motor casing. The large cylinder feed channels (10) drastically reduce power loss due to
drag. Stronger Castings (11) as well as internal reinforcement ribbing increase the load capacity, as well as allow
for higher internal pressures when compared to previous products.
