This past month I had the opportunity to go to Thailand for a friend's wedding.      When first invited I immediately said, "Absolutely!"  But I had to acknowledge that I was drinking my second beer and, well you know, after a beer, everything sounds like a great idea.  The next day, you wake up realizing that you don't really want to do a parachute jump or bungee jump or take ballroom dancing lessons.  Anyway, when the next day came, my first thought was that I won't know anybody and it would just be awkward.  But then I thought, "Why not?"  This had all the makings of a fascinating adventure.

As it turned out, it was probably the best vacation I've ever had.  Two things contributed to this.  The first was Thailand itself.  What an incredible country.  I only went from Bangkok to islands located off the west side of the country, but these islands were incredibly beautiful with some of the best diving in the world,  incredible beaches and breathtaking sunsets. I've already decided to go back to Thailand some day and plan on discovering far more than I did this trip.  Thai food is another topic completely.  Pad Thai, a treat here in Canada, is a $5 meal available everywhere there.  Fresh seafood, curry, soups and Chang beer became staples in my diet and other than the occasional bouts of diarrhea all was good.

The second thing that contributed to how special this holiday was were the people who were there.  32 people made the journey, most being family and not a bad one in the mix.  On a number of nights a guitar would appear and various members of the family would sing a song or lead a sing-a-long. The wedding itself was wonderful with a ceremony at a temple with buddhist monks followed with a traditional wedding on the beach.  Later, I followed the family as the group continued travelling, going south towards Malaysia.  I spent most of my time with the parents, aunts and uncle.  I had so much fun with these people.  In fact, when I think of returning to Thailand I realize that it will never be quite the same, as this was just a special time with special people.

The temperature was usually about 32 degrees and it was very humid.  Sweating profusely was the norm.  But suddenly I'm back in Canada and it's frickin’ freezing.  And they're selling Eggnog in the stores.  But I had a terrific adventure and should be good for a while, although I'm already thinking of the next destination.  Merry Christmas all and a Happy New Year.

BRUCE’S CORNERBC ARTIST HIGHLIGHT :

With hip rhythms, thick harmonies and clever lyrics, Heidi ’s music enchants listeners and compels them to sing along. She draws on an eclectic array of influences - jazz, world, gospel, soul, Stevie Wonder, India Arie, Erykah Badu, Bjork, The Police - and mixes them up with a modern pop sensibility. Her song Fickle Mind won first place in the Write On ’97 songwriting contest. In May 2004, her song Placebo earned Honourable Mention with International Song of the Year. She has won numerous awards on www.garageband.com including Best Female Vocals and Track of the Day.

In the early 1990’s, Heidi co-founded the world/funk band Yellow Belly, which released an independent CD, completed two cross-Canada tours, and had several songs top the charts on MP3.com and college radio. Yellow Belly shared stages with The Bare Naked Ladies, Papa Wemba, Steele Pulse, and 54-40.

Heidi has been a featured vocalist with Bittersweet, the Alexander Browne Orchestra and Johnny Ferreira and the Swing Machine, and a guest singer with a number of well-known bands and performers in the Vancouver and San Francisco areas. She has performed in Europe, the U.S. and Canada, including the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in 2005 (with Bittersweet). Her current backing band – Urban Tribe – consists of some of Vancouver’s finest musicians, performing funky originals and jazz standards.

Audiences love Heidi for her unpretentious persona and soulful performance, her winning blend of natural talent and effortless skill. Listeners everywhere are instantly transformed into long-term and loyal fans. "Sultry jazz-pop with groove and an attitude" is how they describe her songs.

"Soulful, unique, amazing" is how listeners describe Heidi McCurdy’s voice.

Catch Heidi McCurdy at MIXT Lobby Lounge at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel on December 8.

Can it be true? The man who is at the root of the Rolling Stones sound, a founding member and their longest standing guitar player, Keith Richards, is turning 75 this month and he and his fellow Rolling Stones are about to embark on yet another U.S. tour this spring.

To learn about his life, it is often asked, how did he make it this far without major lethal mishap? A life on the road sprinkled with many brushes with the law, and a few friends along the way who died young from an excessive lifestyle that is all too familiar with his profession, being a rock star.

There are a few biographies on Keith Richards out there, some a tad exaggerated and myth-making, and then there is Keith’s own autobiography called “Life”, his version of his own story. Biased or not, it is an interesting read into the life of the untamed, decadent rock star's nasty

habits, vices, acquaintances, fatherhood and more.

The Rolling Stones followed on the heals of the Beatles to breakthrough in America and achieve world-wide fame. As a band they have outlasted the Beatles almost 50 years. Incredible to think of now. They may have peaked almost 50 years ago as well but nevertheless have managed to stay on top in terms of draw and sentimental appeal.

When I think of Keith, I think of those classic Stones riffs like Satisfaction, Gimme Shelter, Monkey Man, Brown Sugar and so many more that bear his signature. He had that quintessential rock-guitar-god look about him as well, although the wrinkles have been adding up for quite some time now. No doubt an old

soldier who will go to his grave with guitar in hand.

Check out The Rolling Stones “From the Vault” series for concert footage throughout their career.
