A month of colours and festivities at CEPT

Come one, come all! Celebrations at CEPT are aplenty, whether it’s holy or Holi. This sizzling summer at CEPT was welcomed with a splash of colours and benevolent wishes for the start of a new year for many.

CEPT University campus seamlessly transformed into a colourful canvas on 2nd March with all students coming together at Shrenikbhai Plaza. Some students chose to play with organic colours to spread the message of safety and concerns towards the environment.

12th March witnessed students across different faculties, regions and languages come together to celebrate Ugadi and Gudi Padwa, to mark the beginning of the New Year according to lunisolar Hindu calendar and the first day of Chaitra month.

Students distributed prasadam after the morning pooja, signifying varied flavours of life such as happiness, sorrow, anger, bitterness, surprise and fear, with a message to unbiasedly soak in all that life gives. That very evening was lit up with cultural performances from many,

singing and dancing into yet another year of excitement and events to look forward to.

Adding to the myriad of research papers published by the students and faculties of Faculty of Planning at CEPT University, Aparna Ramesh; a first year student of MURP published a paper on Urban Heat Island studies in South Asia: A critical review- as part of a research project on Urban Heat Islands in Nagpur.

Aparna worked in collaboration with Rajashree Kotharkar and Anurag Bagade from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology on the paper that was published in the January 2018 issue of Urban Climate, an international scientific journal on theory, science and applications.

The author through the paper throws light on how South Asian cities; that are home to nearly 15% of the world’s urban population, are experiencing rampant environmental deterioration making them vulnerable to the impacts of climate change phenomenon, one of which is known as urban heat island (UHI) effect.

After reviewing the increased research on the subject in recent years, the paper underlines the importance

of a comprehensive overview of the experimental results to add clarity and aid city planning and policy-making. The paper discussed about practical implications for energy use and management, human health, comfort and productivity, reducing air pollution and urban land-use planning.

With similar patterns of urbanization, geographies and climate types prevailing across international borders, cities in South Asian region could mutually benefit from collaborative multidisciplinary research efforts and knowledge sharing to competently respond to and manage the detrimental impacts of urban heat islands, according to the author.

NS: I am currently teaching at NICMAR (National Institute of Construction Management and Research). I have specialised in Investments, Cities and Housing and presently teach subjects specifically related to real estate and urban infrastructure. I also run a consultancy that deals in real estate advisory.

AP: Sir, can you briefly explain your work profile?

NS: I am working as an Assistant Professor since 2013 and was also a programme coordinator for real estate and urban infrastructure management (REUIM) program at NICMAR from 2013-17.

AP: It’s been a long time since you graduated. But if you try to recollect, how was the transition from academics to profession?

NS: It was very smooth because I was placed right from CEPT itself and initially started my career with metro infrastructure, post which I joined Raheja’s where I worked as an Executive Urban Planner. After Raheja’s, I was heading Western Region’s research and advisory for IL&FS property management services based in Pune and later was CEO of Nandan Buildcon at Pune.

AP: Please share some of your non-academic experiences from your days at Faculty of Planning.

NS: Oh! There were many! In fact, I am happy to tell you that at CEPT I was awarded the ‘Most Popular’ student of the year in 2005. We, as a batch, organised NOSPLAN for the very first time at CEPT and that was an excellent experience.

Without adjectives: Doshi

The 7th of March marked a milestone in the history of CEPT when its founder Balkrishna Doshi was announced as winner of the 45th Pritzker Prize. Doshi is the first Indian to receive this honour.

An architect, urban planner, and educator for the past 70 years, Doshi has been instrumental in shaping the discourse of architecture throughout

India and internationally. Through modernistic ideals, his work reflects the essence of India. From the divinity of a temple to a socio-economic lifestyle, to the hot dry monsoon climate, the environment and its surroundings, Doshi has touched the details as well looked at the whole as a sum of its parts.

He is the founder director of the School of Architecture (1962–72), the first Director of the School of Planning (1972–79) and the first founder Dean when the two were merged into Center for Environmental Planning and Technology in 1972.

AP: Lastly, I would like to request you to share a message for the students.

NS: Students should take leadership and responsibility; they should be focussed and should have clear set of goals for life. I usually tell my students that, difference between the ordinary and extraordinary is that ‘extra’. Make sure you have that ‘extra’ in you.
