From n ent De t omes J ne n ancient times the omans honored Juno as the highest of all female gods. All of the nest aspects of a woman were given her. She was known as a comforter, one who brings the child to light and even as the savior of her state. ow, centuries later and without the accompanying festivities and honorary trappings, Juno has become June, the 6th month of the Gregorian calendar. We think of it as the time when summer begins, the time of the summer solstice and the time when new life springs from the land in all of its various forms. The similarities between Juno and June remain. For just a moment it would be fun to thumb back through a thousand pages of time and sit with the elders and scholars who gave Juno her place. t would be fun to hear the stories and reasons that led to her exalted position in the scheme of things. ut perhaps instead of that impossibility we could partly gure out the reasons for June s good standings.

erhaps we could see and recognize the same kinds of things in our rst summer month that moved the ancient scholars to revere and name a goddess. There is more light and warmth in June. There is enough to blend the sun and rain and warm the resting ground. From all kinds of motherly stirrings and inspirations, a new generation of life is born and in May or June, emerges to a position of strength. June nurtures that life, feeds it and pushes it to take its rightful place.

erhaps those ancient scholars saw, as did just last week, a brood of fuzzy goslings tripping up a golf course fairway.

ot much bigger than the balls that typically roll along those grassy ways, stately, honking parents were urging them. Maybe it was only coincidence that placed the family there, but thought heard pride in the voices of the parents. ear where elders sat and thought some thousand years ago, perhaps there was a busy nest. On the trellis by my garden, a house nch has captured my clematis vine. efore could trim the dead waste from last year, she built a nest in it and feeds a hungry set of youngsters there. Or maybe agrarians noted things among their crops as they

rst broke through the ground. My neighbor has enclosed his peas in a rabbit-proof bed and watched a young cottontail sit as though waiting for more growth beside a row. Does the fence keep rabbits in asked. He d spoken earlier of how it would protect his crop of peas. This time of year, deer fawns stand on wobbly legs at woodlot edges and watch, wide eyed, the highway a uarter mile away. Trees and lawns alike are showing off their greenest dresses and casting seeds to warming summer winds. usy robins wait for us to stir the ground and pull the moisture-loosened roots of weeds. And as soon as we retreat to bring a bag and rake, they sort the soil for bugs and worms. S uirrels daily check beside the door for stale bread. art of what they

nd they take to a big, leafy nest in the pines out back. guess if it were up to me to place a name on this most special month, it would be hard to do it better. June for Juno, for motherhood, for rebirth all are good and likely reasons to keep it as it is. f it were not so close to Memorial Day guess would suggest summer solstice be a holiday. After all, what more lofty reasons could we nd to celebrate

Tribute to George WinegarBy: Judy Recker,

President of the Fowlerville Alumni Association Note: George O. Winegar, a longtime member of the Fowlerville Alumni Association board, died earlier this year. The following tribute was given at the recent Alumni Banquet.) George’s life is a perfect example of how important education is and shows that education does not require bricks and mortar half as much as it requires dedicated teachers who are willing to go that extra mile. is rst nine years he went to school at the Thayer chool (until recently located south of Fowlerville on Fowlerville Road). There he was blessed through most of that time with Myrtle Tobias Ebert who more than made up for lack of educational materials with a true joy of learning. During high school, here at Fowlerville High he was also blessed with Riby Holmes, who made the study of vocational agriculture and the Future Farmers of America an introduction to the world of agriculture well beyond Fowlerville. There are several here tonight that share fond memories of the FFA program.

After graduating from FH in , his goal was to study agriculture at Michigan tate niversity. However, after several years and two children, he expanded his goals to include studying eterinary Medicine. n he became George Winegar, D.V.M., and took a position to his delight right here in ivingston ounty with the . .D.A. n , still with the DA, he worked with the Tuberculosis Research roject at M. . . He received his Master’s Degree in Microbiology in . n he and his family moved to Nicaragua for two years and then returned to Michigan, living in Howell and working out of the ansing . .D.A. of ce. During this period he had many assignments throughout the . . and also in numerous foreign countries. Eight years later he moved to the Washington D.C. area, continuing to include many overseas assignments. During

his career he represented the nited tates of America in countries. From to George worked as Assistant Deputy Administrator of Veterinary ervices with an of ce in Downtown Washington looking out on the Mall and the Washington Monument. He returned back to ivingston County in and actually accepted the position of Vice President of the Fowlerville Alumni Association before the move was complete. For the past years he has been active in the organi ation. He found a special pleasure in seeing all his old friends and neighbors at out annual Alumni Banquets. Having been the bene ciary of a public education, starting in that one-room school, he strongly supported the goals of the Fowlerville Alumni Association. He will be missed.

Fowlerville students donate food during ‘COOL OFF Challenge’

Mrs. Anglea Brown’s 10th grade English class wanted to practice their own form of altruism after being inspired by the author of the Little Princes, Conor Grennan. They decided they wanted to help their own community by volunteering in some way. After speaking with the Fowlerville Impact Center and hearing about the huge need they currently have for food, they created the “COOL OFF Challenge” in the hopes of inspiring fellow FHS students & staff to participate in an End of the ear Food rive to bene t the Fowlerville Impact Center. They collected, weighed and delivered the food to the Impact Center. They also provided Mrs. Brent’s winning class with popsicles to COOL OFF! “They were proudly able to donate almost 100 pounds of food to the Fowlerville Impact Center!,” said Mrs. Brown. “I hope they are all proud of themselves for the difference they made to our community. I know I am so proud of each of them.”

The last few weeks have been very busy. A close relative had a knee re laced our of ce ana er urchased a ho e and needed to be oved by the end of the onth two raduations fro our of ce fa ily and nally and ost i ortantly we

ot a new u y As have always entioned we live the subjects we write about. The ho e ins ection articles were written as the ins ections were takin lace. This week let s talk about a few thin s we knew about durin the ins ection and their resolves. The rst and ost i ortant issue was the well. The house was e ty for several onths and the well was not run. The co any that winteri ed the ho e left water in a su ly line near the bladder tank and it froze. e endin on the realtor relationshi and ter s of the listin you will robably need a water test. The water was off durin the rst walk thru and the break was found when the water was turned on. t then beca e easier to run to the local hardware store and urchase a te orary ta e atch

aterial that we installed to et throu h this ins ection. on t be afraid to ste u to et what you need done.

nce tested the ort a e co any wanted to see the water run in the ho e. The water ressure was low and the well s ressure switch li it could not be reached. This obviously created an issue . e had to have a re air escrow account set u after receivin esti ates. ee in ind this is a process. The process has a deadline, so you have to keep thin s ovin . ou are not your realtors only custo er. The well issue turned out ore of a aintenance issue than a costly repair. f course in callin about the possible proble with the pressure, the buyer was told everythin fro a clo ed pu p jet with an repair to a new well at a repair. nce we took possession of the ho e, we obviously had several ite s to freshen up before ove in.

very ni ht while paintin or in , we ran the water with a hose to water the yard. After a few hours we were able to increase the pressure on the pressure switch to pounds fro pounds The idea here is take a breath, don t be in a hurry, understand your proble and its cause. e are oin to add whole house

lters and a lar er bladder tank. n e a inin the softener valve asse bly in the house, we found lar er rust particles. The bladder tank probably has its share of sedi ent, and an

sized tank, doesn t actually hold or provide that iven a ount of reserve water. A twenty allon tank only has a

allon or less reserve of water. The re ainin size of the tank contains the rubber in atable bladder. The tank has an air ttin like a car tire and can be checked with a typical tire au e. The tank should have two pound less pressure than the turn off settin on the well pressure switch. f you notice water co in fro the air

ll, the bladder is leakin and the tanks re uire replace ent. The well syste will also short cycle when the water is in use. This ho e has a three inch well casin , with a jet pu p, located in the base ent not in the well. on t be afraid to contact the pu p anufacturer if you have uestions, ask for technical. This pu p has a rebuildin kit available if needed. on t rush to repairs because of the e cite ent of the new ho e purchase. A well should produce ve allons a inute or ore. se a ve allon bucket to easure at an outside hose and a stop watch. The furnace also had a proble , but because we have a relationship with a heatin co pany, they went the e tra step to nd the unit was still under warranty. e have entioned the idea that you need to not always shop contractors for cost, but the carin or dedication to their custo ers. e found the furnace issue because our heatin contractor was hired to do this inspection. e t week we ll discuss a few other issues that you ay have Around the ouse

Howell conservative activist announces House candidacy Wendy Day of Howell last week announced her candidacy for State Representative of the 47th District House Seat. She described herself as a conservative activist and military wife who believes, “Michigan citizens, rather than Washington D , know what is best for their families and businesses. A long-time activist who is running on the Republican ticket, she said that she knows how Lansing works and is “committed to being a courageous voice that doesn’t cut back room, good-old-boy deals, with the establishment. “We have all been frustrated by politicians who make campaign promises that seem to align with our values, only to have them fail to stand up for those values once they are in of ce. Actions, and votes, speak louder than words, said Day, “If voters want a courageous voice who will stand against Washington, D , it would be an honor to have their support. She is a former Howell School Board Trustee.

iting this e perience, Day noted that she sought to bring transparency and scal accountabil-ity to the District. She pointed out that she “helped develop policies and programs that provided consistent leadership to District employees, more accessibility to the District for parents, and greater transparency to the ta payers.
