April 22, 2018 FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 22, 2018 CELEBRATING EARTH DAY 2018 Furry, feathered, finned, four- legged, and winged - the diversi- ty of God’s creatures inspires wonder and awe. In the Psalms, creatures give praise to God, having their own relationship with God separate from humani- ty. Knowing and loving God’s creatures helps us better know our Creator. Genesis calls hu- mans to till and keep creation, but also to marvel at and love all creatures. We give thanks for all God’s creatures who are an essential part of our life journey and teach us about God. Within this complex relationship which Pope Francis calls an integral ecology, we find ourselves today facing unprecedented, existential environmental challenges. Technological advances that power our society and have brought amazing and wonderful solutions to human needs and suffering. Pope Francis in Laudato Si de- scribed it this way. Humanity has entered a new era in which our technical prowess has brought us to a cross- roads. …Technology has remedied countless evils which used to harm and limit human beings. How can we not feel gratitude and appreciation for this progress? However, technological development when motivated solely on financial gains can lead to unintended negative consequences for the environment and humanity. In Laudato SI, Pope Francis says: We are not faced with two separate crises, one en- vironmental and the other social, but rather one complex crisis which is both social and environmental. The Catholic Church in the US brings a distinct perspective to the discussion of environmental questions, by lifting up the moral dimensions of these issues and the needs of the most vul- nerable among us. As we are approaching the third anniversary of the publication of Laudato Si, the Dio- cese of Worcester is committed educate and motivate Catholics to a deeper reverence and respect for God's creation, and to encourage Catholics to address environmental problems, espe- cially as they affect poor and vulnerable people. http://environment.worcesterdiocese.org/ Print to PDF without this message by purchasing novaPDF (http://www.novapdf.com/)

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 22, 2018

CELEBRATING EARTH DAY 2018 Furry, feathered, finned, four-legged, and winged - the diversi-ty of God’s creatures inspires wonder and awe. In the Psalms, creatures give praise to God, having their own relationship with God separate from humani-ty. Knowing and loving God’s creatures helps us better know our Creator. Genesis calls hu-mans to till and keep creation, but also to marvel at and love all creatures.

Pope Francis in Laudato Si de-scribed it this way. Humanity has entered a new era in which our technical prowess has brought us to a cross-roads. …Technology has remedied countless evils which used to harm and limit human beings. How can we not feel gratitude and appreciation for this progress?

However, technological development when motivated solely on financial gains can lead to unintended negative consequences for the environment and humanity. In Laudato SI, Pope Francis says: We are not faced with two separate crises, one en-vironmental and the other social, but rather one complex crisis which is both social and environmental. The Catholic Church in the US brings a distinct perspective to the discussion of environmental questions, by lifting up the moral dimensions of

these issues and the needs of the most vul-nerable among us.

As we are approaching the third anniversary of the publication of Laudato Si, the Dio-cese of Worcester is committed educate and motivate Catholics to a deeper reverence and respect for God's creation, and to encourage Catholics to address environmental problems, espe-cially as they affect poor and vulnerable people.

THE CANTICLE OF THE CREATURES

By St. Francis of Assisi

Most High, all-powerful, good Lord, all praise is yours, all glory, all honor, and all blessing. To you, alone, Most High, do they belong. No mortal lips are worthy to pronounce your name. All praise be yours, my Lord, through all you have made, and first my lord Brother Sun, who brings the day; and through whom you give us light. How beautiful is he, how radiant in all his splendor; Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness. All Praise be yours, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars; in the heavens you have made them, bright, and precious, and fair. All praise be yours, my Lord, through Brothers wind and air, and fair and stormy, all the weather's moods, by which you cherish all that you have made. All praise be yours, my Lord, through Sister Water, so useful, humble, precious and pure. All praise be yours, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you brighten up the night. How beautiful is he, how cheerful! Full of power and strength. All praise be yours, my Lord, through our Sister Mother Earth, who sustains us and governs us, and produces various fruits with colored flowers and herbs. All praise be yours, my Lord, through those who grant pardon for love of you; through those who endure sickness and trial. Happy are those who endure in peace, By You, Most High, they will be crowned. All praise be yours, my Lord, through Sister Death, From whose embrace no mortal can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Happy those she finds doing your will! The second death can do them no harm. Praise and bless my Lord, and give him thanks And serve him with great humility. +

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP MINISTRY

In Laudato SI, Pope Francis called for "a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet.”. St Luke has a team working to respond to this call. We have a range of projects including Blessing of the Ani-mals, Adult Study groups, and more. You can join our Flocknote distribution by texting "Environmental Stew-ardship" to 84576 to sign up or send an email to [email protected].

Save the date! The diocese will be holding the Worcester Catholic Environmental Stewardship Conference on Sep-tember 23 which will be opened by Bishop McManus will provide a range of speakers discussing Catholic teaching on Care for Our Common Home. Information about the conference and more is available at the Diocese of Worcester website https://environment.worcesterdiocese.org/.

SAINT LUKE'S ORGANIC GARDEN (SLOG) The parish community garden is lo-cated on Route 135 in the small fenced-in area behind St. Luke's Cemetery. SLOG exists in response to Renewing the Earth, a Pastoral Statement of the United States Catholic Conference in 1991. More recently, Pope Francis exhorts the world to focus on envi-ronmental protection in his 2015 encyclical Luadato Si: Caring for Our Common Home. Through our church community we offer individuals and families the oppor-tunity to grow healthy food while helping • to restore the purity of air and water • to halt the loss of farmland • to sustain ecological diversity in plant and animal life All gardeners at SLOG agree to use organic products and practices to grow their gardens. We are a community di-verse in age and cultures, and welcome new members. Gardeners pay a yearly fee of $25 for a 20' x 15' patch and garden May through November. If you would like to learn more, contact the garden facilitator, Mary Andrade, at [email protected].

SAINT LUKE THE EVANGELIST CHURCH

April 22, 2018 4

ST. LUKE THE EVANGELIST CHURCH IS OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK, WE CAN MAKE A VISIT ANYTIME WE PASS.

JESUS WILL BE AS HAPPY TO SEE US AS WE ARE TO SEE HIM.

PRAYER FOR PEACE Lord Jesus Christ, who are called the Prince of Peace, who are yourself our peace and reconciliation, who so often said, “Peace to you,” grant us peace. Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice, and brotherly love. Banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace. Enlighten our rulers that they may guarantee and defend the great gift of peace. May all peoples of the earth be-comes as brothers and sisters. May longed-for peace blossom forth and reign always over us all. Saint Pope John XXIII

ATTENTION H.S. SENIORS

Women of St Luke’s Scholarship applica-tions are in Gloria’s office. They are due back by April 26

PRAY IT FORWARD This April, 56 teens will receive the Sacrament of Confir-mation here at St. Luke’s. As a gift and remembrance, each confirmand will receive a copy of The Catholic Youth Bible. These wonderful bibles are used in our Reli-gious Ed. classes. The books include hundreds of well-written articles, guides, prayers, and more, and we know they will remain a source of comfort and strength well into adulthood. All of our Religious Ed. classes are mak-ing contributions to help provide gifts for their fellow stu-dents. We feel that it is important for each young Catholic to see, in a concrete way, that we all pray for and support their faith journey. If you would like to “Pray it Forward” and help pro-vide Bibles to our confirmation candidates, donations in any amount (cash or check) can be left at the parish center or the rectory during the month of April. Questions? Email Debbi Ziegler at [email protected].

2018 Ecumenical Vacation Bible School Registration is now! “Shipwrecked” is the theme for this year’s VBS planned for August 6-10 at

the First United Methodist Church. High School and Adult volunteers are very much needed for this popu-lar summer program. For further information or to volunteer to assist with this annual event you may contact Dianne Patrick at 508-366-8509. Registration forms are available in the Parish Center or online at [email protected].

Members of Saints Francis & Therese Catholic Worker will be here this weekend with their home-made baked goods. The sale of their wholesome bread and muffins, made with organic ingredients, is the main source of income which supports their min-istries. They shelter homeless men and women, and work for justice and peace. There is no set price for the bread and prefer to depend on our generosity to carry on the works of mercy.

VOLUNTEER REQUEST OUTING TO MCDONALDS

Looking for a “mellow” individual to bring homebound parishioner to

McDonald’s on a Sunday. Time commitment would be one hour round trip. You might do this once or twice a month as your schedule permits. The person lives close to the rotary, and is home alone all week-end. This would allow him to get out for a short pe-riod of time and interact with someone else. His in-terests (to talk about) include music, sports (example Bob Dylan, Beatles, Red Sox, sports history and his-tory in general.)

FOREVER YOUNG SEWING FOR HOPE On Monday, April 23, we will wel-come Judy Hall, who will introduce us to “Sewing for Hope,” a charity dedicated to providing appropriate school clothing for African children. Join us at 9:45 a.m. for a conti-nental breakfast, a short business meeting, and an interesting program. We look forward to seeing you.

May Knights of Columbus meeting will be held on Monday May 7th at 7pm. There will be a breaking of bread with a meal from Chef Bobbie at 6:15. This will

be a very important meeting with the nominations of officers for the next year and information on the Corporation.

“St. Luke’s donates 10% of its weekly collection through Sharing First . We donate to others be-fore attending to our own wants. Sharing First is unique not only because there is one

collection each week, but that we help the needy first. Please adjust your donation to include both Sharing First and St. Luke’s. Thank you for your generous support.

APRIL 15 supports DISMAS in the amount of $1284 APRIL 22 supports (TODAY) ST. ANNE’S FREE MEDICAL PROGRAM APRIL 29 supports Mustard Seed

The Mustard Seed is a house of hospitality in the Catholic Worker movement begun in 1933 by Peter Maurin and Dorothy Day. It began in 1972 as a storefront community living room but grew into a full house of hospi-tality in 1974 providing refuge and rest for the hungry, lonely, and homeless in Worcester.

Today the Mustard Seed offers a nutritional evening meal to the city’s hungry each weekday. Meals are pro-vided by people of all faith traditions as well as from area corporate and civic groups. Students from area col-leges are also supportive. St Luke’s participates by providing a meal 6-7 times a year; additional support is given to them through our Sharing First program and through our Outreach Ministry.

On April 28-29 our Sharing First donation will be given to the Mustard Seed for a special project that they are about to begin - much needed renovations to the bathrooms at their home on Piedmont Street. Your gen-erosity will help in this very worthwhile endeavor. Please be as generous as you can – through prayer or monetarily. Thankyou

4TH SUNDAY OF EASTER “I am the good shepherd...and I lay down my life for the sheep…and they will heed my voice.” (JOHN

10:14-16) When you pray, do you only ask Jesus for the things that you want? Do you ever ask Him what He wants from you? How do you listen for His response? Usually, the answer is in “quiet whispers”, so take

time every day, in silence, to actively listen for His response.
