Our return to God for Blessings onSunday, December 17, 2017

Stewardship Thought: “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!”- LUKE 1:28

Faith is a gift from God. Take time in silence and thank Him for all the gifts He has given you. Try to set aside any anger or resentment you have and really open your heart to receive the gift of God’s mercy and forgiveness. We can’t give what we don’t have. We need to receive God’s mercy and forgiveness first before we can give it to others.

SAINT OF THE WEEK SAINT EUGENIA

Although we know that there was a woman named Eugenia who was martyred in ancient Rome, that is all we know about her. The rest is legend. According to that legend, she was the daughter of Philip of Alexandria, governor of Egypt when Valerian reigned as the Roman emperor. Dressed in men's attire, Eugenia ran away from home and was baptized by Helenus, the bishop of Heliopolis. Thinking she was a man, the bishop sent her to an abbey where she became the abbot. When Eugenia was falsely accused of adultery, she appeared in court. The judge turned out to be her father. She revealed her true identity, was declared innocent, and was instrumental in her father's conversion as well as the conversion of many others. Eugenia was martyred in Rome circa 257. Her feast is celebrated on December 25.

MISS BEHAVIOR Dear Miss Behavior: Here’s an idea: why not tell us some facts about Christmas that we may not already know. Sincerely,

Christa Dear Christa: You have given me an interesting challenge. Here is an incomplete list of facts about Christmas. The word Christmas means “Christ’s Mass.” The first holyday observed by Christians was Easter, not Christmas. Think about it: without Easter and Christ’s resurrection, there would be little reason to celebrate Christmas. In the year 350, Pope Julius I declared December 25th to be the date of the celebration of Christ’s birth. We do not know the actual date or even the year when Jesus was born. The Christmas tree comes to us from sixteenth-century Germany. The Puritans in Massachusetts banned the celebration of Christmas from 1659 to 1681. They thought the celebration was too Catholic. Christmas was declared a national holiday in the United States on June 26, 1870. We are not sure which American president had the first Christmas tree installed at the White House. Some say it was Franklin Pierce in 1856; others say that the credit goes to Benjamin Harrison in 1889. All agree that President Calvin Coolidge began the custom of the White House tree-lighting ceremony in 1923. Now, here are some facts about Christmas that we all know. Christmas is a time of joy, a time when we give gifts and show our love for each other in countless ways. It is a time when we give more generously to the poor, when we smile, when we remember what it was like to be a child, when we rejoice that we are a redeemed people, because God has chosen to dwell among us. Merry Christmas!

Miss Behavior
