Celebrating Christmas - Here and Now
ENCOUNTERING JESUS IS ALWAYS A LIFE - CHANGING EXPERIENCE. Sometimes that’s as simple as a change in attitude. To read about or remember his kindness, care, or patience with others may inspire me to renew such virtues in my own life. His promise of God’s mercy may help me trust more in God’s forgiveness as well as my forgiveness of others. His teachings on peace and justice, stewardship, and the dignity of every person may enlighten my convictions and commitments.
Other encounters with Jesus may be more dramatic and evidently profound to others. His generosity with his own life may spark unspeakable gratitude within me and the grace of being joyfully generous with my own life.
I am sure that we are here today once again celebrating the Feast and Season of Christmas because the lives of many before us were changed in simple and profound ways by the life of Jesus, raised from the dead.
AS WITH THOSE FIRST DISCIPLES AND ALL WHO FOLLOWED THEM, our own amazement, our wonder, will lead us to search for and tell more stories of how all this began. In fact, the Christmas story encourages us to remember and celebrate how we too have come to know and trust God.
Who are the people who populate our own nativity story? What have they revealed to us of the mystery of God? Who gave birth to joy in our lives? Cultivated our courage? Challenged us beyond limits? Who are the people who have clearly and convincingly revealed to us the unfolding mystery that God is with us?
ALL THE ELEMENTS OF THE GOSPEL STORIES OF THE NATIVITY OF JESUS TELL US ONE MOST IMPORTANT TRUTH: Those who encountered Jesus on Earth – like all us – wondered who he was and where he came from. They also could not stop themselves from telling the stories of how he came into their lives and the difference that made from then on. What a gift we have from them in their testament of faith, that God is with us.
THIS CHRISTMAS, TOGETHER WITH OUR ENTIRE PARISH STAFF, I thank God for each of you, for your faith, and for your witness to the truth that God is with us. As I look for the evidence of this, often I turn to a kind of unofficial motto I have coined for our parish: Friendship In Christ. A college teacher of mine helped me to describe what this looks like. Friends enjoy each other’s company. Friends strive to bring the best out of each other. Friends share a commitment to a common good outside of themselves. We celebrate the Feast and Season of Christmas because the lives of many before us were changed in simple and profound ways by the life of Jesus, raised from the dead. As I experience our life together as a parish community and search for the stories of how God is with us and being born into our world again this motto helps me to have faith, invites me to love more, and inspires my hope that God never lets anything good go to waste and that God always finishes what God starts.
Truly may we all be blessed this Christmas in the sureness of the love of God! It promises to make a big difference in our lives and through us in the lives of many others. Thank you for being here.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Visitation We are almost there! Just two days before we celebrate the great birth of our Savior, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. In the Gospel, Mary visits her relative to share the joy she is experiencing as the mother of God. It is appropriate for us to consider those people in our own lives who could use a joyful message right now. Maybe it is a relative who is suffering a serious mental or physical illness. Maybe it is someone mourning the loss of a spouse, a child, or a relative. Maybe it is someone who is struggling to find work or who is having financial problems. Whatever person you determine God is calling you to console, embrace this great task. Christians are people who believe in a God-man who came to earth so that we might experience the fullness of joy and the fullness of life. We are not called to settle for mediocrity or to allow others to settle for it. Do not hesitate to share the joy with those people who need it most during this beautiful time of the year. Like Mary, we have surprising experiences that take us aback (albeit not bearing the Son of God), but let us press on with haste to bring others the Good News of salvation even in our own struggles.
The 20th Anniversary St. Louis Marian Conference will be held at the Renaissance Hotel Jan 11-12-13,2019 Confirmed speakers are Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, Dr. Gregory Thompson, Peggy Schneier, Fr. Vincent Lampert, Mary Lou McCall, Fr. Tom Sullivan, Bishop Robert Hermann, and Fr. Charles Becker. For additional information, call cell # 314 401 1707, or visit website: stlmarianconference.net

MEMORIES AND DREAMS Throughout our lives, we retain the language and habits of our native region and family of origin. Should we return to our home after a long absence, we quickly revert to its familiar speech and practices. Our deep memory is reflected in old stories and words and speech patterns. This familiarity runs like an under-ground river and accompanies us wherever we go. Not only do we remember, we are incorporated into and made part of a greater memory. In remembering and recollecting, we are in turn gathered up and re-collected. Today we remember Mary, a small figure travelling the country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pronouncements and dreams of the prophets point to this time when the Lord’s words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled. The memories of her people are alive in her, and memories of her nourish our own living faith. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ARCHDIOCESE OF ST. LOUIS OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP Christmas 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Rejoice! The weeks of Advent waiting are over, and Christ is born! We rejoice in our Savior’s birth—remembering the great gift of faith He has given us through the mystery of His incarnation and the saving power of His death and resurrection. Each year, the people of our archdiocese have been asked to make a special gift on Christmas Day to support our seminarians at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary. The men of our seminary, who have responded to Christ's call to follow Him, are truly a gift to the Church and to the Archdi-ocese of St. Louis. It is these men who will bring the faith given to us by Christ 2000 years ago to future generations here in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. I ask you, once again, to pray for vocations and for all our priests and seminarians. I also ask you to be generous in your donation to the Christmas Day collection, which helps pay the day-to-day expenses and maintenance of our seminary. Please be assured of my prayers for you during the season of Christmas. May the Lord of life come into your hearts and homes in a special way during this holy time of year. Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson Archbishop of St. Louis
