Notes from Fr. John T oday we celebrate the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. This week we get to hear Matthew’s version of the Sermon on the Mount. We are called to be meek, offer forgiveness, and to be peace- makers. In many ways, we are to shine a light on a world that does not see these traits as values. The final lesson from the sermon is that God will be with us as we work to be His light. This week, we once again celebrate Catholic School’s week across the country. The theme this year at St. Agnes is “Respecting Our Roots”. Throughout the week, the students, faculty, and Mr. Lungaro will stress the roots of our Catholic faith; Roots that go back for over two thousand years. We will also stress our local roots and where we have come as a school in the past 108 years. We can see that history with our eyes as we walk into church and see all the pictures of those who have graduated from St. Agnes. We will also hear some of our story as Sr. Mercy tells the story of our Franciscan sisters from Mishawaka. We have a rich history, and throughout the week, we will show our appreciation to our students, faculty, principal, alumni, and friends who continue to keep St. Agnes School strong. Today at the 11:00 AM mass, we will highlight Catholic Schools Week by having the children and alumni participate in the liturgy. The children’s choir that sings once a month at the 5:00 PM mass will be leading our music. There will be alumni readers as well as Eucharistic Ministers. The nice thing is that our students and alumni serve us every week, not just Catholic School’s week. At noon, the school will hold an Open House so that prospective students and parents can see the school, meet some of our parents, teachers, and students, and get information on registration. Everyone is welcome, and we encourage you to bring you friends and neighbors. The success story of St. Agnes School has been a joint effort for over 108 years. Please come and celebrate with us. Finally, thanks once again to all of you who continue to support the Teach Who Christ Is campaign in the Archdiocese. We presently have collected over $67,898 at St. Kieran. We are beginning to discuss the next projects that will be completed at St. Kieran. Your generosity makes these projects happen. Thank you. If anyone would still like to make a pledge, please call the parish office, and Sandy can give you information on the campaign. 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal “Love Your Neighbor As Yourself ”

This week, many parish families will be receiving a letter from Cardinal Cupich asking that you make a pledge to the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal. We ask that you respond as generously as possible.

The Appeal supports both Parish and Archdiocesan ministries and services. The Appeal funds services that are of great help to ministries here in our Parish. For example, Appeal funds support Archdiocesan Services used by Ministers of Care, Religious Education program volunteers, our deacons and priests, and services that benefits the entire parish community.

This year, the theme of the Appeal is “Love Your Neighbor As Yourself.” We have all received God’s love. By financially supporting the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we help to extend God’s love to many, many others.

As you review the mailing from Cardinal Cupich, please note the ministries and services funded by the Appeal, including the ones that directly support the work of our parish. Then please give generously. Note, when our parish reaches its goal of $16,918 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our Parish.

St. Agnes has hosted a Shawl Ministry group for a number of years. They are a small group of knitters and crocheters who make baby afghans for families who are baptizing, shawls for the sick or homebound and neck scarves for PADS guests. A lot of the work may be done at home, but they meet once a month for about an hour at St. Agnes, usually on the last Thursday of the month at 10 AM for a cup of coffee, company, and to pray while they work. If you’re interested in joining the group, please call Ann at 756-2635 or Kay in the parish office at St. Agnes at 709-2694. P.S. Plenty of supplies are available, so please think about coming to learn how to knit or just for the fellowship!
