Four of our finest artists will demonstrate their techniques at our May meeting. Joe Mac Kechnie, Kay Barnes, Kathy Collins and Kristi Galindo Dyson will paint and explain their work . Each will be at a different station in the room so that we can wander from artist to artist watching them paint. Joe Mac Kechnie is retired and spends much of his time painting. It shows. His work changes constantly and improves with each effort. Much of his current painting is in acrylic. Kay Barnes is the consummate teacher. At her studio in Woodinville, she conducts classes on all aspects of watercolor. Kay offers information at a dizzying pace – all of it valuable. Kathy Collins’ free-flowing work is filled with light and color. Her high- contrast work is beautifully composed and brilliantly executed. Her marine paintings are especially arresting. working on another controversialeditorial. We sometimes agreewith him and sometimes we don’t,but he causes some gooddiscussions and is alwaysenjoyable!

• Kathy Winters has been the chairof the spring paint-out at SamishIsland for eight years, taking overfrom Jeanne Davis. We always fillthat event—it’s so much fun topaint with friends over a longweekend, particularly when thefood is so good. Kathy puts thepaint-out together pretty much onher own from several hundredmiles away. Good work Kathy!

• Thank you to Shirley Jordan, whotook over the job of both Treasurerand, at least temporarily, bookkeeper. That’s a lot ofvolunteer time and effort that she’staken on.

• I can’t leave out Cheryl Phillips! She always exceeds her jobdescription. Cheryl is ourDatabase Manager. She keepsinformation about our members, our mailings and everything weprint. She keeps all of us informedand answers all of our questionsand requests with a broad smile onher face…..you can even hear andsee it over the phone!

I’ve enjoyed my two years asNWWS President. We have so manytalented members, it’s a joy to beinvolved.

experimentation. Somewhere in thosemiddle years we produce our bestwork.

Surely you have stood in front of apainting and thought, “That can’t beCharlie’s. He’s not that good!” Only todiscover that it is his but was executedten years ago. The stuff he’s doing nowdoes nothing for you.

Don’t misunderstand me. I’m notnecessarily referring to abstract work.

EDITORIALContinued from page 2

Some can be wonderful. Indeed, Ivoted for an abstract oil painter for thisyear’s Foundation scholarship award.

I’m just terribly saddened by seeingrecent efforts by watercolor artistswhose landscapes and still lifes, full oflight and color I greatly admire andbeing bitterly disappointed.

This all came into focus when apainter friend literally stopped in hertracks and stared at the magnificentwatercolor over my fireplace. Whenshe read the name, she was stunned. “Ijust saw her demonstration. I’d neverhave guessed she could paint like that!”

I do understand that one tires ofpainting the same old thing in thesame old way. Our styles will naturallyevolve but let’s try to remember whatmade our paintings beautiful andexciting and not lose it in our quest for“art”.

The Northwest WatercolorFoundation was established  to:

• Assist, encourage, promote andadvance the visual arts in thePacific Northwest

• To provide scholarships• To conduct certain charitable

and educational activities• To solicit and accept

contributions, gifts, devises andbequestsWe were recently involved in the

selection of the 2009 Gold GrantScholar ship Award and enjoyedreviewing the materials and artworksubmitted by 20 undergraduate artmajors from Washington, Idaho andOregon.

Working with the Foundation isextremely satisfying, as we are awareof how the Gold Grant helps supportsome extremely talented youth.  Theapplication process encourages allthese students to pull together a bodyof work and create both an artist’sstatement and a biography.

There are two ways you can help theFoundation:1. If you have a desire to serve our

great purpose, we’d love to haveyou on the board.  We hold threemeetings a year and anyinvolvement would beappreciated.

Artist scam - attempted fraudYou may receive an E-mail offeringto buy paintings seen on yourwebsite. You then receive a largecheck ($5,500) via Fed Ex. Next, you receive an E-mail asking you toproceed to the bank, deposit thecheck and pay the shipper. Theobject is to get you out of thehouse, presumably so they canransack your home. Obviously, thecheck is no good. Report any suchactivity to the police. If it seems toogood to be true…

2. We are seeking to increase ouraccount balance to the point thatinterest will fund the scholarshipand other expenses.  Weencourage tax-deductibledonations of any size and urgeyou to consider including theFoundation for gifts andbequests.

The Foundation is also lookingfor a new treasurer.

Drawing an Easier WayTranslating a drawing from a small

value sketch to a large sheet ofwatercolor paper can be daunting attimes. So many times we fall short offilling out the whole paper. This iswhen I we say, “Maybe I should cropthe painting!” I know there are anumber of methods for transposingwith a grid system, but this is toocumbersome and time consuming forme. Here are some helpful drawingideas that I have found to be quiteuseful over the years:

Stand away from the paper at armslength. This allows one to see thewhole paper and the spatialrelationship of all the shapes to eachother. This is very difficult to do whentoo close.

Hold the pencil loosely at the endwith the arm near full extension.

Actually more control can bederived by drawing from the shouldersthan from the wrist. Wide sweepingrelationships can be easily established.

Take broad measurements from thesketch, photo, or from life with thepencil and mark them on yourwatercolor paper. Find one shape torepresent your base measure and use itto measure all other divisions of space. For example, I may measure the width

of a boat cabin with my pencil and usethat measurement to tell how manyboat cabins away is the next boat, howmany boat cabins down is thewaterline, how many boat cabins is thewidth of the hull, etc. I translate therelationships onto my paper using anew boat cabin width I established inmy painting.

If I am plein-air painting, I extendmy arm fully with my pencil eithervertical or horizontal and mark off themeasurements with my thumb on mypencil.

As the drawing progresses on thepainting and refinement begins, keepchecking all the relationships to eachother. I call it “triangulating”. I willpause, for example, with my pencil onthe paper at the corner of the boatcabin and draw mental lines to otherimportant points sketched inthroughout the paper. My eye quicklychecks the angles and distances. Thiskeeps everything in properrelationship to each other. I tell mystudents to not draw in isolation, inother words, don’t draw the objectwithout checking the relationships. Itleads to disproportion.

May these thoughts help ease thechallenge of sketching on yourwatercolor paper. Keep your brush wet!
