The Novena to the Holy Spirit in preparation for the Feast of Pentecost begins on Friday, May 22 until Saturday, May 30. MAY - Month of Mary Our Lady, Mediatrix of All Graces

In recent times, special attention has been given to Mary's title of Mediatrix of All Graces. This means that Mary is our mediatrix with Her Divine Son. All of our prayers and petitions go to Him through Her; He distributes through Her all the graces we receive. Though it has not yet been defined as an article of Faith that Mary is the Mediatrix of All Graces, the belief had gained almost universal acceptance among the most orthodox theologians prior to Vatican II, and nearly every recent Pope has alluded to it or even expressly taught it. On the strength of these teachings one can unhesitatingly subscribe to the judgment of the apologist Fr. Joseph Bainvel SJ: The twofold cooperation of Mary in the work of the Redemption, first on earth by Her life, prayer and suffering, and then in Heaven by Her prayer alone is sound Catholic doctrine, beyond all dispute, and wor-thy of being defined—i.e. of being raised to the dignity of an article of Faith. Many private revelations bear out the fact that Mary is the Mediatrix of All Graces. St. Catherine Labouré saw rays of light streaming from gems in Our Lady's fingers. The Blessed Virgin explained: The rays are graces which I give to those who ask for them. But there are no rays from some of the stones, for many people do not receive graces be-cause they do not ask for them. The rays streaming from the hands of Mary are depicted on the Miraculous Medal. At Pellevoisin Our Lady said to Estelle Faguette that the Heart of Her Son bears so much love for Her that He cannot refuse Me any requests. In another apparition Estelle saw drops of rain falling from Our Lady's hands. She understood these to be graces. These graces, said the Blessed Virgin, are from My Divine Son; I take them from His Heart. He can refuse Me nothing. Tell everyone that Our Lord grants us all graces through the Immaculate Heart of Mary; that all must make their petitions to Her, Jacinta of Fatima said to Lucia. Mary shared in the work of the Redemption to such an extent that She is called the Co-Redemptrix. It is only fitting that She should share in distributing the graces of that Redemption. Just as God did not have to come into the world through Mary, so He does not have to distribute His graces through Her. But the fact is that He wishes to distribute them in that way. St. Bernard tells us that if Mary does not pray for us we shall not obtain salvation; because She will not have provided us with grace, which is all that we require, and the only means by which we are saved. He then con-cludes, What more can we desire? Let us seek for grace, and seek it by Mary; for that which She seeks She finds, and never meets with a refusal. Mary's role as our Mediatrix is an appropriate one to be emphasized in our day. The people, sinking beneath the weight of their sins, can be saved only by a return to God. But God, in His august majesty, seems very far away to people who have never known Him. And the thought of an all-just God is a frightening one to them. Naturally they seek mercy rather than justice. It is most consoling, therefore, to know that we can turn to Mary, our all-merciful Mother, and ask Her to inter-cede for us. She who is our Mother is also the Mother of God, and He can refuse Her nothing. She takes the grac-es from His Heart and distributes them to all who ask for them. We cannot have peace without the cause of peace, says Fr. Edward Leen CSSp. in his book, Our Blessed Mother. Until the world assents to depend on its Mother Mary... there can be no peace... Only when Mary's rightful place, as Mother of Men, is fully accepted will the world be able to rise. The apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima show us the truth of this... Mary is the Mediatrix of All Graces, and it is through Mary alone, the grace of true peace among nations can come to the world. Justly then, in these days of turmoil... does the Church salute Our Blessed Mother with the glorious title Mediatrix Potentissima—Most Powerful Mediatrix.

EASTER DUTY

Easter Duty is the popular name for the obligation which the Church imposes on all Catholics who have attained the age of reason to confess their sins at least once a year and to receive Holy Communion during the Easter period. The law of annual confession and the law of Easter Communion were established by the 4th Council of the Latern in 1215. Those who willfully neglect to observe these explicit laws are guilty of grievous sin. The Church says that confession once a year and Communion at Easter is the least that a person may do and remain a practicing Catholic. The Church wishes her members to receive the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucharist often. By a special privilege of Pope Pius VIII for the United States, the time for Easter Communion begins on the First Sunday of Lent and closes on Trinity Sunday (this year celebrated on June 7).

THE APPARITION OF ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL It is manifest, from the Holy Scriptures, that God is pleased to make frequent use of the min-istry of the heavenly spirits in the dispensations of His providence in this world, and especially towards man. Hence the name of Angel (which is not properly a denomination of nature, but office) has been appropriated to them. The angels are all pure spirits; they are, by a property of their nature, immortal, as every spirit is. They have the power of moving or conveying themselves from place to place, and such is their activity that it is not easy for us to conceive it. Among the holy archangels, there are particularly distinguished in Holy Writ Ss. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. St. Michael, whom the Church honors this day, was the prince of the faithful angels who opposed Lucifer and his associates in their revolt against Gad. As the devil is the sworn enemy of God's holy Church, St. Michael is its special protector against his as-saults and stratagems. This holy archangel has ever been honored in the Christian Church as her guardian under God, and as the protector of the faithful; for God is pleased to employ the zeal and charity of the good angels and their leader against the malice of the devil. To thank His adorable goodness for this benefit of His merciful providence is this festival instituted by the Church in honor of the good angels, in which devotion she has been encouraged by several apparitions of this glorious archangel. Among others, it is recorded that St. Michael, in a vision, admonished the Bishop of Siponto to build a church in his honor on Mount Gargano, near Manfredonia, in the kingdom of Naples. When the Emperor Otho III. had, contrary to his word, put to death, for rebellion, Cres-centius, a Roman senator, being touched with remorse he cast himself at the feet of St. Romuald, who, in sat-isfaction for his crime, enjoined him to walk barefoot, on a penitential pilgrimage, to St. Michael's on Mount Gargano, which penance he performed in 1002. It is mentioned in particular of this special guardian and pro-tector of the Church that, in the persecution of Antichrist, he will powerfully stand up in her defense: "At that time shall Michael rise up, the great prince, who standeth for the children of thy people." St. Padre Pio would visit this Shrine and urge others to do so as well.

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO ST. MICHAEL

Saint Michael the Archangel, invincible Prince of the Angelic hosts and glorious protector of the universal Church, I greet thee and praise thee for that splendor with which God has adorned thee so richly.

I thank God for the great graces He hast bestowed upon thee, especially to remain faithful when Lucifer and his followers rebelled, and to battle victoriously for the honor of God and the Divinity of the Son of Man.

Saint Michael, I consecrate to thee my soul and body. I choose thee as my patron and protector and entrust the salvation of my soul to thy care.

Be the guardian of my obligation as a child of God and of the Catholic Church as again I renounce Satan, his works and pomps.

Assist me by thy powerful intercession in the fulfillment of these sacred promises, so that imitating thy courage and loyalty to God, and trusting in thy kind help and protection, I may be victorious over the enemies of my soul

and be united with God in Heaven forever. Amen

5 MILLION PRAYERS FOR PEACE

Are you depressed about the state of this fallen world? Do you ever wonder if you could do more to help? Well, this year the Association of Marian Helpers together with the World Apostolate of Fatima and Children of the Eucharist are inviting prayer warriors around the globe to join them on a bold new mission called "World Rosary 2020." The goal is to collect 5 million prayers of the Rosary into a "spiritual bouquet." This bouquet of prayers will be offered at Masses on May 13 and October 13 at the Chapel of Apparitions in Fatima, Portugal, by Fr. Carlos Cabecinhas, rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary. Our Lady prom-ised at Fatima: "In the end, My Immaculate Heart will triumph." She also said at Fatima: "Continue to pray the Rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary because only She can help you." Our Lady promised that if we pray the Rosary every day and make sacrifices, She will intervene in history. Visit [WorldRosary2020.org] to submit your gift of ongoing prayers to Our Lady of Fatima's Immaculate Heart. Again, go to WorldRosary2020.org and enter the number of rosaries you'd like to commit to. There you can keep track of the total number of prayers offered.

DONORS NEEDED

We are in need of donors for a new microphone for the High Altar for use at the Ad Orientem Novus Or-do Masses as well as for a lectern for the sedilia for priests who wish to begin the celebration of Holy Mass there. If you are interested in contributing to this, please contact the Parish Office.

OUR LADY OF THE SACRED HEART

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is a title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary by Father Jules Chevalier in 1857. Mary is showing the Child Jesus' heart while Jesus points to his mother. In 1854, in Issoudun (France), during a Novena in honor of the Immaculate Conception, Father Jules Chevalier promised that if his dream of forming a missionary congregation in honor of the Sacred heart of Jesus became a reality, he would teach the faithful to love Mary in a special way. During various Novenas made to the Virgin Mary, Chevalier obtained several monetary do-nations that allowed him to build the Basilica of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Issoudun (France) and in 1857 he established his Religious Congregation and gave Our Lady the new name: ...When pronouncing this name, we thank and glorify God, because he has chosen Mary among all creatures to form in his virginal womb the adorable Heart of Jesus. We recognize through this special title, a summary in a certain way of the other titles of Mary, the ineffable power that the sweetest Savior has granted her over him adorable Heart. We beseech this compassionate Mother leads us to the heart of her Son... As the power of Mary surpasses what our weak reason can conceive, and Jesus always listens to the humble supplications and prayers of his Mother, we will entrust her with the success of difficult and desperate causes ...

— Jules Chevalier 1857

MEMORARE TO OUR LADY OF THE SACRED HEART

Remember, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, what ineffable power thy divine Son hath given thee

over His own adorable Heart. Full of trust in thy merits, we come before thee

and beg thy protection. O heavenly Treasurer of the Heart of Jesus,

that Heart which is the inexhaustible source of all graces,

which thou mayest open to us at thy good pleasure, in order that from it may flow forth upon mankind the riches of love and mercy, light and salvation,

that are contained therein; grant unto us, we beseech thee, the favors which we seek. . . .

We can never, never be refused by thee, and since thou art our Mother, O our Lady of the Sacred Heart,

graciously hear our prayers and grant our request. Amen.

Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here.

We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite

you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.
