DEVELOP AND CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS

MY MAGAZINE OTHER MAGAZINE

Page 12: Foundation Portfolio in Media : Evaluation

DEVELOP AND CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS My magazine challenges usual

conventions of rock music magazine by appealing to a dominant female audience through a pink white and black colour scheme

My magazine challenges the conventions of rock magazines through the use of a bold typeface for the title rather than a broken font synonymous of rock magazines

My magazine challenges conventions of normal rock magazines through the use of an image of a female artist only on the front cover

DEVELOP AND CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS

My magazine develops the ‘subscription’ section used on some contents pages by also giving 3 reasons why the audience should subscribe, the feature will be used weekly

My magazine challenges conventions of contents pages through the minimal use of images on the contents page, this provides emphasis on only the main features

My magazine challenges conventions of a contents page through the use of a section specifically for weekly found features of the magazine.

DEVELOP AND CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS

My magazine challenges conventions of a double page spread by not using quotations from the article to advertise it on the page.

My magazine develops conventions by using one large main image of the artist however it is a mid-shot to emphasis on her femininity through her makeup

My Magazine does not use multiple entry points as the example above shows.

HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL

GROUPS?

Page 18: Foundation Portfolio in Media : Evaluation

REPRESENTING ANY CLASS FEMALEThe magazine represents females as they are dominantly shown through images and written about through the magazine. Females are also represented through the pink colour scheme.

Middle class are represented in the magazine shown by the clothing the main female wears throughout. Her clothing is not designer and can be afforded by middle class readers.

Youth is also represented in my magazine as the majority of images are of females and a band (in the contents page) of a young adult age range. I feel my magazine represents young female artists as confident through the way my main model stares confidently in the camera on the cover page.

REPRESENTING

Leather magazine represents a wide range of artists from various ethnic and social backgrounds, as it also shows unsigned bands and artists. The front image represents a female artist portrayed as being independent and strong, a misconception throughout all ages and ethnicities around the world from all music scene’s in that women don’t belong in the music scene as much as men.

As you turn to the contents page there is an image of an unsigned band ‘undercurrent’ of which consists 5 male artists ranging in age from 19-31 and from ethnic backgrounds ranging from British-Iraqi. Leather magazine aims to open the music market to promote bands from all backgrounds. RnB and Rap music is often associated with ‘black music culture’ and a lot of urban dialect and jargon is often used in magazines such as VIBE, however, Leather uses no colloquial language so that the magazine is accessible for people from all backgrounds.

WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTIONS MIGHT

DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?

Page 21: Foundation Portfolio in Media : Evaluation

DISTRIBUTING MY MAGAZINE

A renown multinational company who are well built and could fund my magazine easily.

Owners of Kerrang they already have a successful market for a similar magazine to mine.

By using ‘Synergy’, Leather and Kerrang could be used to promote each-other for free, and as the target market is similar it would be successful.

Also a renown multinational company who could easily fund Leather into a successful industry.

Owners of NME they have a successful target market, that is slightly similar to mine.

BAUER IPC MEDIA

Page 22: Foundation Portfolio in Media : Evaluation

DISTRIBUTING MY MAGAZINE

As my magazine is aimed at older teens/young adults, they have more disposable income to spend on magazines. If I used a company such as Bauer to distribute my magazine, it would be found on shelves in WH Smith and supermarkets such as Tesco and Sainsbury's.

In an on-the-go society however, people find they don’t have time to buy magazines, especially the younger generations, so I will offer the subscription service where the magazine can be delivered to the audience members home, an online store where the magazine can be purchased and sent out. Another idea for distributing the magazine is having an ‘app’ for smart/android phones where the target audience can buy the magazine to their phone and read it weekly.

WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR

MEDIA PRODUCT? HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS

YOUR AUDIENCE?

Page 24: Foundation Portfolio in Media : Evaluation

AUDIENCE

The audience for my magazine is Females between the ages of 14/15 to about 22/23. The females will be fans of rock music and chart music.

How I attracted my Female audience:

•Pink, white and black colour scheme is often synonomous of a very feminine magazine and automatically attracts female audience.•Dominant female artist used on main cover, dressed in feminine clothing.•Rock fans are attracted to the magazine through the features of other rock bands titled on the front cover.

Page 25: Foundation Portfolio in Media : Evaluation

AUDIENCE - CONTINUED

How I attracted my Female audience:

•Fashion article in the magazine will attract the female audience to purchasing ‘gig’ and ‘festival’ wear.•The white background is synonomous of fashion magazines often read by woman and targeted at a female audience, I used a white background to also attract a female audience.•The main article and double page spread is on a rock artist who is a female, attracts the intended audience as she is both an artist of the music they are fans of and a female role model.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF

CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?

Page 27: Foundation Portfolio in Media : Evaluation

TECHNOLOGIES

During the creation of my media product, a music magazine, I’ve learnt a great deal about technologies and they have vastly helped, and improved, my media product had I been without them. During the process of creating my product I regularly blogged about what I’d done and so in parts of my answer to this question I’ll reference these blog entries or make use of the screen prints featured in these blog entries.

To make my product I used a number of different technologies. Needless to say, I used a computer but below is a list of other technologies I made use of for the task; -Digital Camera -Digital Video Camera -Scanner -Adobe Photoshop -Quark Xpress -Internet Explorer (Blogger and numerous other websites) -Microsoft Word/Open Office Writer -Microsoft PowerPoint/Open Office Impress

Page 28: Foundation Portfolio in Media : Evaluation

TENCHOLOGIES

Overall technology has helped me with my task of creating a front cover, contents page and double-page spread in numerous ways

and without it; the end product I created would be considerably less professional and

of a lesser quality. It would have also resulted in me being less organised and showing less cohesive and clear research, planning, skills

and evidencing.

LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO

YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO

THE FULL PRODUCT?
