WHO WE ARE WHAT WE DO

The St. Johns River State College Foundation, Inc. is a charitable organization that exists to support the growth and development of SJR State in various ways which are beneficial to its students, faculty, staff and campus facilities. We fulfill this mission by actively encouraging private gifts from individuals, alumni, businesses, associations and service organizations.

Chartered in 1970 by the State of Florida as a nonprofit, direct support 501(C)3 organization, the SJR State Foundation, Inc. is governed and guided by an independent board of directors composed of professional, business and civic leaders who have a vital interest in higher education within Clay, Putnam and St. Johns counties.

To fulfill our mission statement and meet our goals, we perform three activities. We:• Receive funds through our volunteer-driven annual fundraising campaigns, special fundraising events, and through thoughtfully planned bequests and deferred gifts. • Manage funds through a conservative cash management and investment program. Equally as important, we provide careful stewardship of funds and other assets entrusted to us through annual audited financial reports and communication with donors.• Disburse funds through a thoughtful planning process involving leaders of the Foundation and the College.

The SJR State College Foundation, Inc. is organized to receive, invest, manage, and disburse donor gifts in the most effective manner possible.

The St. Johns River State College Foundation seeks and secures financial support for the College and its students by raising funds through friends and successfully managing resources and relationships.

After taking many dual-enrollment classes at St. Johns River State College, Ernie “Bubba” Silcox said he knew it made sense to continue on the path to earning his A.A. degree. A year later, he graduated from SJR State and continued his studies at the University of Florida, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in social studies education. Today, Bubba teaches world history at Palatka High School. Did his time at SJR State influence his current career decision? “In some ways it did,” he said. “I had always juggled the idea of whether I really wanted to become a teacher, and some of the history teachers I had at the College inspired me to want to pursue that goal.” Bubba credits his parents and Coach Sam Rick, former student activities coordinator at SJR State’s Palatka cam-pus, for their ongoing support in his life. “Aside from the support my parents always gave me during my col-legiate career, Coach Rick was instrumental in helping me reach my goals at the College and beyond,” Bubba stated. “Coach Rick was a great mentor to me during my time at the College and even to this day, long after I have graduated. His advice and outlook on life helped me as I continued my education at UF and even now, starting my first real job.”

While studying at SJR State, Bubba enjoyed working as Coach Rick’s student worker. Through that role, he has fond memories of assisting with the annual fall and spring frolics and other Student Government Association (SGA) events, as well as new-student orientations. “I was able to interact with tons of students, whether it was helping with registration, finding classes, or just playing a game of pool,” he recalled. “Also, being able to help plan and work on behalf of SGA for frolics gave me a better appreciation for the College and the work people put into making it great.” Bubba was inducted into SJR State’s Hall of Fame and recognized by “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” He also received the Student Leadership Award for his SGA participation. A “very great experience” is how Bubba sums up his time at SJR State. Having friends studying along with him added to his experience. “Many of my friends also attended the College and had several classes with me, so there was never the feeling of being the new kid or trying to start over,” he said.

The quality of education she received at St. Johns River State College inspired Veronica Charltray to enroll in the College’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. Her first experience with SJR State’s nursing program was while pursuing an Associate in Science in Nursing degree, a program she graduated from in December of 2005. Then, in 2013, Veronica was one of four students awarded a $1,200 continuing education scholarship from the Florida State Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (FSARN), which allowed her to pursue a BSN at SJR State, a program she graduated from in December of 2015. “The BSN program introduced me to the new world beyond clinical experiences that many of us nurses linger between – that of tasks and leadership – to meet the demands of the healthcare industry,” Veronica explained. “The diverse patient population served within our community has made it a priority to find nurses with higher education.” Veronica credits SJR State’s wide variety of learning activities, including both online technology and classroom learning activities, for preparing her for her current position as manager in a 26-bed orthopaedic/medical surgical unit at UF Health Jacksonville. Veronica formerly worked with Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital as a bedside nurse for adults and children with brain injuries. She also served as a nursing supervisor for five years.

While Veronica spends her days striving to provide patient satisfaction in the workplace, she fondly recalled how SJR State provided student satisfaction for her, particularly because of the consistency and support she received from her professors. “They helped me maximize my learning ability to be successful, personally and professionally,” she said. In 2015, Veronica was selected to make a poster presentation at the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses 41st Annual Educational Conference. Over 230 abstracts were submitted, and Veronica’s was one of 140 selected to be presented at the “Beyond Survival: Practice, Policy and Partnerships” conference held in New Orleans, LA. According to Veronica, her poster-presentation, “The New Trend of Healthcare Reimbursement Systems: CompleteCare,” was useful for helping “the role of nurses, as team navigators, to generate new knowledge in the transition of care across settings.” While she continues to move forward, personally and professionally, Veronica remains grateful for the nursing foundation she received – and built upon – at SJR State. She is proud to be yet another example of reminding students that they can begin here and go anywhere.

OUR SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

The SJR State Foundation has only one mission – to support the growth and development of SJR State and its students, faculty, staff and campus facilities. We fulfill this mission by actively encouraging private gifts from individuals, alumni, businesses, associations and service organizations. Over the past ten years, the SJR State Foundation has successfully managed over $5 million in funds for student scholarships, program support for workforce development and adult education, athletics and more. The SJR State Foundation awarded 328 scholarships totaling $383,192 from April 1, 2016 – March 31, 2017. As the direct support organization for St. Johns River State College, the SJR State Foundation’s charitable efforts support a diverse demographic of students on three campuses, many of whom have chosen to attend St. Johns River State College as their first exciting step after high school, while others have selected the College to train for a new career. Serving approximately 11,000 students annually, SJR State plays a vital role in the community by providing educational opportunities to traditionally economically disadvantaged students. Thank you for helping our students succeed!
