Wear Your Thinking Hat ! Wear Your Thinking Hat ! Wear Your Thinking Hat ! This page is dedicated to the creative genius in You. Yes, it is very simple. Just wear your thinking hat appropriate for the puzzle or situation . … and Get Going! We present a Management Consulting Crossword Puzzle here. –the words and clues for Crossword Puzzle in this issue are taken from the book “Management Consult-

ing” (Fourth Edition) -an ILO Publication edited by Milan Kubr (So, go ahead and test your knowledge … you may be already on road to success in CMC examination!

We also present a special column by the name “ Thought Express” -this is intended to encourage our Members to share their ‘opinion’ on any random subject of interest in a ‘free flowing’ manner . Yes, no judgment passed, because, there is no ‘thought police’ here! So what are you waiting for ? Start scribbling your thoughts and send it to the IMCI Commu-

nity via “Thought Express”. Here we go with the first one - What Consultants should be doing in Changing Times?

Thought Express… What should a consultant do to be of “Value” to clients in changing times? -by Jagmohan Rawat

Consultant often has a toolkit of

techniques and methodologies in his arsenal, backed by academic research

and ‘consulting experience’. Here, I am reminded of parting advice given to us

by our professor.. at the conclusion of his lectures on ‘Statistical Techniques’ in

our post-graduation class; he said. “I have taught you about various statisti-

cal tools and techniques… but remem-ber: this advice. He said, ‘”f you have

a screw, do not go around screw-

ing!”

The full import of this advice dawned upon me after many years of consult-

ing practice. I realized that the most important thing to know is not how

many fancy techniques or tools you know but it is to ‘know’ which tool to

use and when. I realized how majority of us have been screwing around, and for how long! I realized that

knowledge , or its elder cousin called ‘intelligence’ is not enough. To make

wise decisions, you need

The environment in which an organiza-

tion is required to perform is always changing. In the context of an enterprise,

change is often a conscious business strategy. Management Consultants are

expected to offer the correct advice to the managements in managing the chang-

es effectively. What should consult-ants do to ensure that their advice

and intervention actually helps the managements in doing the right

things and in a right manner, in changing times? In other words, to ensure they remain of “value” to their

clients in changing times?

It is a simple question but there is no

straight forward one “correct answer” to this question. With the nature and

dimensions of change becoming more complex (due to globalization, techno-

logical advancements etc.), offering the “correct advice” has never been so

difficult as it is today.

‘wisdom’. This essentially separates an

expert from a mere practioner of the art, if

you may call it so!

But then how does one become ‘wise’? Working under the guidance and supervision

of experienced consultants is one way to get insights into their wisdom and ‘imbibe‘ it from them. It is not learning, which I think is

again more of the same knowledge! Imbibing is almost like developing an insight—your

sixth sense-. In this context, I am a strong admirer of the “internship model” perfected

by medical, legal and Chartered Accountan-cy professionals. We can perhaps adopt this

model to the Management Consulting pro-fession to impart some ‘wisdom’ to the

budding consultants in a structured way. IMCI perhaps is the right forum to deliberate

how this can be institutionalized.

Wisdom is fine; but alas, that in itself is

also not sufficient! Words of wisdom have

to be constantly interpreted in ever changing

context of the situations and environment, in which an organization, or an individual, is

required to perform. Change by definition is dynamic and involves risks pertaining to the

unforeseen and unpredictable.

This brings us back to the original question:

What should consultants do to ensure that their advice and intervention actually helps the man-

agements in doing the right things and in a right manner, in changing times? I am of the opin-

ion that a Consultant needs to be constantly aware of the changes in the business context

of its clients, keep his roots alive to the Academia and upgrade his tool-kit and

then draw upon his wisdom to apply all this to his consulting practice. This alone will help

him/her to remain relevant to the changing

business, social and cultural realities.

That should keep a Management Consultant

going—assignment or no assignment !

Happy Management Consulting!
