Dear Parents: The month of March marks a time in schools throughout our area for Spring Break and we’ll begin our Spring Break in a few days. For parents, especially parents of juniors and seniors, you are faced with rather important decisions during this time regarding your child’s activities during spring break. Spring break started many years ago as a time for college students to relax and break away from their studies. However, spring break is increasingly involving high school age students and for the past several years has gained the reputation of being a time for unsupervised risk taking. Many high school students make poor decisions and place themselves at risk by agreeing to and engaging in activities before they have the maturity to handle the situations that occur during spring break. The Prevention Action Alliance is an organization dedicated to helping promote healthy lives through substance abuse prevention. Regardless of whether your high schooler is away from home or staying here in town during spring break, this organization has some pretty helpful tips for this time, including…

Make clear your expectations regarding smoking, drinking and using other drugs. Children whose parents talk to them often about not using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs are 50% less likely to use in the first place. In today’s world, these expectations must include the serious dangers associated with vaping and electronic cigarette use.

Set rules as to which friends (if any) are allowed over while you’re gone, as well as which friends’ houses your child may visit.

Know where your child is and whom he/she is with at all times. Obviously, at this age you don’t (can’t) be with your high schooler all the time. High school students seeking to be independent is a part of them growing up. However, it’s still ok to insist on knowing where they are, the people they’re with, and having them check in with you on a regular basis.

Supervision, at this age, is less about holding your child’s hand and hovering over their shoulder and more about taking certain precautions, setting clear expectations, and arming your child with the knowledge and information to make smart and healthy lifestyle choices. For the most part, our students at FZS consistently make positive decisions. However, please keep in mind that a non-supervised spring break trip or activity (no matter where it is) for high school students can have serious consequences and even the best individuals can fall victim to poor choices. As parents it is our responsibility to help our children make good decisions regarding spring break activities and talk through their plans with them. Please take time prior to spring break as an opportunity to have these conversations with your child. Regardless of what your children have planned for spring break, it is important to keep communicating with them and providing them with rules, expectations, and information so that they can enjoy the time away from school while staying safe. Best wishes for a relaxing and safe spring break! Sincerely,

Kevin Keltner, Ed. D. Principal

CLASS OF 2022

Spring break is almost here! It is a great

time to recharge and prepare for fourth

quarter. It is time to put your studies in

high gear. It is imperative to stay on top

of your assignments and plan accordingly

to study for exams. If you find that you

need help, please take advantage of the

A+ tutoring that is provided every day

after school.

When you do have some free time, come cheer on the many sports

that are wrapping up their season. Spring sports have just begun, if

you are interested in joining a team, make sure you stop by the

activities office for more information.

If you need anything, please stop by my office and I can assist you

with all your questions and concerns. Make sure to enjoy your last

few months as freshmen...you will be sophomores before you know

it.

Dr.Ticia Garbarini Assistant Principal

CLASS OF 2020

Wow, it’s hard to believe that March is here already! Hopefully, the snow, ice and cold are behind us and warmer days are ahead! Be sure to stay on top of your grades as 3rd quarter will be ending on March 8, which is right around the corner! Spring Break is almost here…it begins at the end of the school day on Friday, March 8, and extends through March

17. School resumes on Monday, March 18. Spring also means sports and activities, so be sure to support your fellow Bulldogs by attending one of these events. As a reminder, the ACT (for those who registered), will be given here at South High on Tuesday, April 2. All registered students will need to arrive by 7:30 a.m. I will be sending out more information regarding this in the coming weeks, so be watching for it in your email. As always, if I can be of assistance in any way, please do not hesitate to come see me!

Mrs. Stephanie Goellner Assistant Principal

CLASS OF 2019

Spring break will be upon us shortly.

My sincere hope is that this gives

everyone a relaxing break to recharge

those batteries for when we return as

the last few remaining months will fly

by quickly. Upon our return from spring

break, I will be crafting an email with

several key dates related to Senior

events. Among those to be included will

be our Senior Field Trip set for April

24, more information will follow after

spring break. The official last day of school will be May 21.

Though most pressing is the fact that 3rd quarter ends March 8. I

greatly encourage all parents to review with your children their

grades and credits. I have met with several students as of late

discussing what needs to be accomplished prior to the end of the

quarter to ensure we all are celebrating on May 25 at the graduation

ceremony. Speaking of celebrating, the Senior Grad Night

Committee has a golf tournament fundraiser scheduled for April 6.

If you would like to participate or donate your time to help with

this event, please click HERE for more details. Proceeds from this

event go toward paying for the annual Grad Night Party.

Mr. Joe Serles Assistant Principal

CLASS OF 2021

February sure flew by! Winter sports

and the musical kept a lot of us busy!

My hope is that despite all the extra-

curricular activities, you all have been

able to keep your grades up! March 8 is

the last day of the quarter which means

you have just over a week to raise or

maintain your grades. Make sure you

are turning in all of your work, and if

you have any tests in the next week,

study! You need your third quarter

grades to be as high as they can be to average with fourth quarter

for the semester, which is what credit and GPA is based on for your

transcripts.

With spring comes spring sports, one-acts, and many other exciting

activities. Remember to watch Twitter@FZS2021 for sports up-

dates and other exciting news for the Class of 2021. I hope you all

enjoy your spring break and come back refreshed and ready to

finish the year out strong!
