Australia’s most successful privately owned logistics company Linfox has placed its largest-ever order for MHE (forklifts) with Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA).

To be fulfilled across Australia, the massive delivery will be a mixture of Toyota forklifts, BT pallet movers and Raymond high lift reach trucks,

Significantly, it contains a high proportion of three and four wheel electric forklifts, drawn from the latest 8-Series range, with industry-leading safety features.

The order is the latest result in a growing relationship between the logistics giant and TMHA – and it’s based not only on product quality, but also on mutual respect.

Linfox has made its name, and stakes its reputation, on customer service. In the past two years it has distilled its client base from 300 to 100 and it treats those customers like gold.

“If you don’t look after your customers,

someone else will,” Linfox Logistics chairman

Peter Fox says.

It’s only natural he expects the same level of

attention from his business partners.

“Relationship is everything – it’s the great

differentiator,” according to Fox. “This year we

celebrate 25 years with Daimler Benz and in

2016 we will have been with Dunlop 50 years

(as preferred suppliers).

“We place a great deal of accountability with our

suppliers. Our dealings have to be transparent.

Relationships at this level are like a marriage.

If we have a problem we talk about it, air our

grievances, have a dust-up and fix it – locked

and loaded.”

Surprisingly, Linfox began its serious

relationship with Toyota only relatively recently.

“Toyota pushed it along,” Fox says. “They

proposed that there was a lot of benefit to be

gained from having a primary relationship over

several supply lines.”

According to TMHA’s Executive Director Steve

Takacs, the common ownership by Toyota of all

three forklift brands – Raymond, BT and Toyota

– is a big factor in streamlining the supply, and

importantly the service, chain.

In that respect the two companies share similar

philosophies. Linfox offers many services

beneath its logistics masthead.

“Not every customer takes up every service

on offer, but we are a one-stop shop and we

endeavour to provide our customers with an

holistic view of our supply chain solutions,” Fox

says.

As the relationship developed, Linfox and

TMHA discovered they also connected on levels

which were both intrinsic and idealistic.

Both are committed to future-proofing the

environment, and to achieving growth based on

the quality of their products.

The Linfox success story is well known, in fact

a legend, in the Australian transport industry.

This privately-held company has achieved

extraordinary growth fivefold since 2002.

Customer service a two-way road for Linfox

Fork Torque I 4

Just as exceptional, however, is the company’s

contribution to energy and emissions reduction.

Each year it conducts an energy survey, audited

by Ernst and Young. The latest published survey

2006/7-2008/9 shows a drop in emission rates (a

calculation of carbon emissions divided by total

fleet kilometers) of 28 per cent and a reduction in

carbon footprint of 14 per cent. The next survey,

soon to be released, may be even better.

“There’s real alignment with Toyota on energy

use,” Peter Fox says. “Toyota is one of the

most advanced company in the world in

finding alternatives to the use of fossil fuels.

In the future we could, and should, be working

together.”

Optimisation of warehouse energy has become

a major factor in Linfox’s relentless drive to

reduce its carbon use.

In March 2011 it will open a purpose-built

warehouse for National Foods in Melbourne’s

Laverton in which it will co-generate electricity

from a natural gas pipeline, directing surplus

back into the grid.

Natural gas, it says, is the greenest of all

viable energy sources, supplanting even the

clean black coal and green electricity which it

draws down in eastern Australian states from

hydroelectricity plants in NSW and Tasmania.

Warehouses which have not been purpose-built

are upgraded to Linfox guidelines, maximising

use of lighting and racking to achieve optimum

energy use.

The company is wary of what it calls “the

developers’ one-size fits all solution”.

As part of its proprietary floor mapping program,

CAPS, it places lights where necessary and

reduces stack height to allow natural light and

reduce lifting energy.

Linfox’s policy for the use of forklifts currently

favours neither IC nor electric.

Choice is determined by the availability of green

energy.

It’s possible, Linfox says, to build an energy-

efficient case for the use of diesel over electricity,

depending on the source of the electricity and

the impact of energy transfer.

Nonetheless the Linfox order is weighted

towards Toyota’s battery electric forklifts, a move

Steve Takacs says leads an industry-wide trend,

through the growing availability of clean energy.

“In every respect Linfox’s order reflects the

leading edge of industry demand,”

Takacs says, “on an environmental level and in

terms of OH&S safety considerations as well.

“The 8-series exclusive system of active stability

(SAS) and Operator Presence Sensing (OPS)

are essential for a company like Linfox, which

views safety with highest regard.”

“As the leading forklift company in Australia,

TMHA were confident in our ability to

provide Linfox with the safe, productive and

environmentally friendly MHE it required.

Be it a manual pallet jack, a counter-balance

forklift or a high lift turret truck, the TMHA MHE

range is Australia’s number one for breadth

of range, with a reputation for product quality

backed by our 100% fully owned TMH branch

outlets” said Takacs.

The Linfox order includes 2.5-tonne payload

8FG25 and 3.5-tonne payload 7FG35 forklifts,

BT Levio LWE140 “walkie” electric pallet trucks,

and Raymond 7600 sit/stand reach trucks with a

working height of 10 metres.

“Take-up of battery electric vehicles will

continue to grow,” Takacs says, ”particularly

as companies like Linfox continue to create an

environment in which their use is put beyond

question.”

Peter Fox’s personal dream is a future in

which each of his warehouses will be covered

in solar panels, providing power to the plant.

It’s a dream currently thwarted by available

technology.

Although Linfox’s environmental division says

solar efficiency has doubled in the last five

years, they believe it is not yet able to make a

material difference in energy delivery.

For the moment, Linfox has a firm policy for

off-peak recharging of electric forklifts, driving

down costs and contributing to equalisation of

demand on the grid.

Linfox is also concentrating on its employees’

contribution – and in this respect Toyota’s state-

of-the-art forklifts are making a difference.

The company has instituted the corporation-wide

voluntary GreenFox campaign in which staff

members can study and sign on to a program of

workplace environmental protection.

So far 600 have taken the pledge and been

rewarded with a certificate signed by the

chairman.

Linfox also runs an eco-drive program, teaching

and enforcing energy- conscious driving

habits. The new Toyota forklifts will make a big

contribution, Peter Fox says.

“No-one likes driving old stuff, especially when

they’re on it all day long,” he says. “It’s just like

when you buy a new car and you have pride in

it. The new forklifts will give people a sense of

pride and they’ll drive them to get the most out

of them.”

Linfox and TMHA are working together to devise

a life-cycle program for the current order and for

forklifts that will continue to be supplied to the

company.

It takes into account a case-specific preventative

maintenance program (Linfox prefers to

outsource its maintenance to Toyota), and a

schedule to determine optimum residual value for

turnover – to the benefit of both companies.

Currently projections are that the Toyota, BT and

Raymond forklifts will extend productive service

life, providing greater cost and energy efficiency.

Australians have had their first glimpse of a stunning race car that demonstrates the performance potential of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology.

The Toyota Supra HV-R is the first and only

hybrid car to win an officially sanctioned motor

race, achieving the breakthrough last year at

Japan’s only 24-hour endurance race at Tokachi,

on the island of Hokkaido.

This historic car has made it to Australia, where

it formed the centerpiece of Toyota’s motorsport

display at the Australian International Motor Show

in Sydney.

Converted from a retired Super GT racing car,

the Supra HV-R was driven to victory by three

Japanese drivers – Katsuyuki Hiranaka, Akira

Lida and Tatsuya Kataoka – who were joined by

Andre Couto from Portugal.

The hybrid Supra started from pole position and

held a comfortable lead for most of the race

before pulling away towards the finishing stages.

It eventually claimed an emphatic victory, winning

by 19 laps.

Toyota Australia’s senior executive director sales

and marketing David Buttner said Toyota – with

its emphasis on hybrid technology – was excited

at being the first manufacturer in the world to win

a motor race with a hybrid-powered car.

“The Supra HV-R victory is a very significant

moment in Toyota’s history and motorsport

history in general,” Mr Buttner said

“It highlights the direct benefit that motorsport

has on passenger car technology, and reaffirms

hybrid systems as the way of the future both on

the track, and on the road.”

Mr Buttner said the significance of the car went

far beyond winning a race.

“Toyota engineers gathered an enormous amount

of data from the Supra HV-R during the 24-hour

enduro.

“Since then, they have been using that

information to help make future hybrid systems

lighter and more efficient.

“Reductions in size, weight and cost are central

to improvements in the performance and fuel

efficiency of all our vehicles, including hybrid

systems.

“Motorsport plays a vital role in developments

that eventually find their way into Toyota’s road

cars.

“It’s all about gaining every possible advantage

– perhaps a fraction of a second faster each lap

while also having the fuel efficiency to be able to

stretch the gap between fuel stops.

“We race, we learn, you win.”

Mr Buttner said the racetrack success of the

Supra HV-R destroyed one of the myths about

hybrids – that they lack performance.

“In the toughest of motorsport environments,

this vehicle has demonstrated the flexibility

and performance potential of Toyota’s hybrid

technology,” he said.

The Supra HV-R features a 360kW 4.5-litre petrol

V8 engine which works in tandem with a 150kW

electric motor mounted on the rear axle, and

10kW electric motors in each of the front wheels.

The exciting coupe also has a sophisticated

energy-regeneration system to recover the huge

amount of energy available under heavy braking

from high speeds.

Instead of being fitted with rechargeable

batteries usually found in hybrids, this car

uses a quick-charging capacitor system. This

new development was necessary to cope with

the massive acceleration and braking forces

produced during a race of this length.

In addition to the Tokachi event, the Supra HV-R

also completed a demonstration lap at the 2007

Macau Grand Prix.

Hybrid TheoryThe first petrol-electric hybrid to win an internationally accredited race shows the depth of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive.

TMHA now supplies materials handling solutions for Mitre 10’s nationwide network of distribution centres which service more than 450 Mitre 10 and True Value hardware stores.

Toyota has been awarded a five-year lease to provide Mitre 10 with BT, Raymond and Toyota-branded forklift products, based on Toyota’s superior fleet management system and the overall quality and safety features of its warehouse equipment range.

Mitre 10 distribution centre management and staff were particularly impressed with the performance of BT’s range of reach trucks and low-level order pickers.

Mitre 10 Southern Region Distribution Centre manager Brett Manning said the company’s deal with TMHA had brought an instant improvement in workplace efficiency and safety.

“The great thing with the switch to Toyota is the uniformity of the forklift product we use in the warehouse,” he said.

“The technology that Toyota uses is superior to other brands, and importantly, it also brings OH&S benefits.”

Mr Manning said Mitre 10 specifically chose BT’s reach truck for its ability to reach the extremely high racks in its warehouse, and because staff liked the unit’s ergonomic controls and ease of operation.

Mitre 10’s adoption of Toyota’s integrated fleet management system has also enhanced OH&S levels. “Our workplace is now safer because of Toyota’s fleet management system, due to that system’s features and how it interacts with those built into the equipment,” Mr Manning said.

Mr Manning also praised the durability of Toyota’s products. He said not one piece of equipment has been out of service due to breakdowns, allowing full utilisation of the company’s fleet.

TMHA corporate account manager John Pudney believes the partnership with Mitre 10 highlights Toyota’s ability to supply materials handling equipment for a broad range of warehousing needs.

“Mitre 10 is regarded as a super-brand, so the relationship has come together really well,” Mr

Pudney said.

“For future business, it shows that Toyota has the capabilities to deal with all types of business – large or small. Mitre 10 is also a very diverse business, so it highlights Toyota’s broad capabilities in the materials handling sector.”

Mitre 10’s Toyota-supplied fleet consists of 38 BT second level man-up double-length order pickers, 21 BT reach trucks, 16 BT double-length pallet trucks and a range of Toyota LPG counterbalance forklifts, BT pallet trucks and Raymond man-up high-level order pickers.

Toyota forklifts really stack up for Mitre 10Australian hardware giant Mitre 10 has forged a strong and rewarding relationship with Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA), the supplier of forklift solutions for Mitre 10’s nationwide network of distribution centres.

Toyota Material Handling Australia’s Director of

Sales, Steve Takacs, said the whole company

was delighted to have Casey Stoner not only

using but also representing the company’s

Huski skid-steer loader products.

“Casey is an outstanding ambassador for

Australian sport, and Toyota Material Handling

Australia looks forward to a successful

partnership with him,” Mr Takacs said.

Hino Australia has released a Front Underrun Protection System (FUPS) for 500 Series FG, GH, FL and FM models to improve safety for road users in the event of collision.

The FUPS unit – available as a Hino Genuine part – precedes the Federal Government’s 2011 compulsory implementation date for these systems.

The FUPS is fi tted as a bumper bar replacement, which incorporates a steel tube to prevent other vehicles becoming trapped and crushed under the front of the truck.

The protection system also helps prevent damage to Hino’s steering controls, allowing the truck to be brought safely to a controlled stop.

When fi tted, the front axle loading increases to 6.5 tonnes and the vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Mass is increased by half a tonne.

The FUPS is available from, and can be fi tted at, all Hino dealers, and a FUPS integrated Hino Genuine bull bar is also available.

Certifi ably strong

Hino 500 Series single cab FG, GH, FL and FM models and 700 Series FS and SS models now comply with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Regulation 29 (UN ECE R29) for cabin strength.

The ECE R29 prescribes safety standards for protecting occupants of commercial vehicles. The Hino 700 and 500 Series trucks were subjected to a series of load and impact crash tests for cabin strength and construction.

The goal was to ensure a ‘survival space’ in the cab for occupants in the event of a crash where the cabin is put under pressure. A stronger cabin provides additional safety for occupants.

Each Hino vehicle complying with ECE R29 will have a plate verifying certifi cation.

Driver safetyAll new 500 Series trucks from 2010 will feature a driver SRS airbag as standard. This is already a standard feature across the popular 300 Series.

Truck-driver safety is a primary consideration for Hino, and additional safety equipment such as airbags helps Hino provide peace of mind for drivers on the road.

Upon impact from a collision, the airbag deploys from the steering wheel, reducing the chance of the driver sustaining signifi cant injury.

A clearer viewAll new 500 and 700 Series trucks will have heated and electric main mirrors, plus heated spotter mirrors on both sides of the cab.

The heated mirrors are manually operated with a switch near the driver which cleans fog and moisture to provide clearer vision.

Electric adjustment of main mirrors allows drivers to remain safely in their seats when modifying their rear view.

Darrell Lea Chocolate Shops Pty Ltd lease up to 40 pieces of material handling equipment from across the TMHA forklift product range during peak production and distribution times.

Leased equipment includes BT reach trucks

and stackers, Raymond pallet trucks and order

pickers, and Toyota gas and battery electric

counter-balance forklifts.

The highly seasonal nature of Darrell Lea’s

business – and the fact its manufacturing and

national distribution centres are 35km apart –

create special challenges, according to national

logistics manager Shane Lincoln.

Darrell Lea’s factory is in the southern Sydney

suburb of Kogarah and its national distribution

centre is at Ingleburn, close to the M5 Motorway.

The company has 80 retail stores nationally, as

well as licensees in regional areas and stock in

over 1000 newsagencies and pharmacies.

The entire distribution chain – from factory to

warehouse to distribution around Australia – is

temperature-controlled between 15 and 18

degrees Celsius.

According to Shane Lincoln, TMHA’s extensive

product range, coupled with the flexibility of

leased equipment, have helped Darrell Lea meet

its material handling challenges. In addition, the

company’s maintenance section at Kogarah uses

Toyota forklifts to lift heavy machinery items.

“Darrell Lea is a very seasonal business,” Shane

Lincoln says. “The peak season is Easter, and

it begins eight or nine weeks out from the actual

weekend. We ship upwards of 100,000 cartons a

week during the peak of the 4-5 week distribution

cycle. Our next biggest peak is Christmas, and

after that Father’s Day – when Dad’s Bag offer is

very popular. Then the next one is Mother’s Day

and then Valentine’s Day.”

TMHA helped Darrel Lea in the design of racking

and modified machines to suit Darrell Lea’s

special needs, such as the six-metre racking at

its 10,000 square metre warehouse.

George Borisko from TMHA Corporate Accounts

said the relationship between Darrell Lea and

TMHA was a classic example of supplier and

customer working together to boost productivity

and safety over the last half decade.

“We strive to met customer expectations and

tailor the best material handling solutions,” he

said. “With Toyota’s wide product range, regular

Toyota provides sweet forklift solutions for Darrell LeaIconic Australian confectionary-maker and retailer Darrell Lea has forged a unique partnership with Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA).

Fork Torque I 10

site visits and understanding of the Darrel Lea

business, we’ve been able to meet specific needs

for Darrell Lea.”

As Shane Lincoln explained, “Toyota Material

Handling modified the safety frames on the BT

high-reach trucks so they fit into our drive-in

racking.”

“It also helped source special forklift attachments

that have saved us 8-10 man hours when loading

40ft containers for export. We now export large

quantities of liquorice to the United States. When

we started those exports, we were hand-stacking

the containers. It would take two men four to five

hours.

“Toyota helped us source forklift attachments

for slip-sheet loading. Toyota went to a supplier,

fitted the attachments to the machine and

did some trials. We’ve been able to change

our forklifts fairly quickly and slip-sheet our

containers, which is a great cost saving to us.

“With the slip-sheet method, the cartons are loaded onto a pallet that’s on a plastic sheet. The attachment on the forklift grips that sheet and drags the whole pallet of stock onto two platens. We then drive that into the container and do the opposite operation, so the forklift pushes the pallet down the floor of the container. We can load 200 cartons in minutes as opposed to the hours it took before.

“TMHA has also tailored the machines to meet our specialised OH&S needs. The high-reach trucks have settings for the different levels, so the operator knows the level of his tynes. We also limit the speed of the forklifts around the warehouse.”

Shane Lincoln said Darrell Lea has built its relationship with Toyota Material Handling Australia over the last six years. “We had a long

association with BT Lift Trucks,” he said. “That

relationship expanded in 2005 when TMHA

acquired the BT and Raymond franchises – so

we had a single source for all our equipment.

“The number and variety of Toyota machines

means there is one for each application – and that

is really helpful for us with so many applications in

our business,” Shane Lincoln said.

“The support network is really good. We find that

our Toyota Major Account manager Peter Poulos,

is very attentive and knows our business well.

“They come in and do site audits, and make

suggestions based on their knowledge of the

machinery. They can look at our operations and

suggest a machine for a particular application – be

it in the factory, the maintenance section or the

distribution centre. Then they’ll bring that machine

in for a trial and we can make decisions from

there. It is really important for us that the Toyota

people understand our business, and what we

need to achieve.

“The Toyota service people schedule forklift

maintenance to suit the cycles of our business.

We run a day and an afternoon shift for the pick-

and-pack operation in the warehouse, so we can’t

afford to have any downtime – especially when

we’re in the busy periods and on tight schedules.

Our customers need to have their stock, so we

can’t have anything break down in the supply line.”

* Harry ‘Pop’ Lea founded his confectionary

business in Manly (Sydney) in 1916 to boost

winter trade in his fruit shop. In 1927 he opened

a combined milk bar and confectionary shop in

the heart of Sydney (Haymarket) and named

the store after his youngest son Darrell. The

company’s Kogarah manufacturing facility

opened in 1962.
