welcomeForgan Arts Centre is delighted tointroduce its new Coordinator,Rebecca Sharp.

Welcome to the new Spring Season at Forgan Arts Centre! Since I started on the1st of October, it’s all been a bit of a blur! I’m very lucky to be working alongsidesuch wonderful people – the terrific committee and volunteers, our fantastic tutors,members and participants. There is so much going on in and around Forgan –I look forward to developing new and existing links with local residents, schools,businesses, charities, artists and anyone who wants to get involved in fostering artsin the community. In addition to the stellar list of existing classes, I’ve introduced acouple of new ones – you’ll see storytelling, candle-making, freestyle sewing andmore. Brand new features include the Forgan Salon evening event and one-off,not-to-be-missed workshops on Saturdays. Want to know what a Gong Bath isor how to Grow a Poem? Then read on…!

We have big plans for the future – exhibitions, regular events, classes for childrenand teenagers, and a mixture of short, long and one-day courses to make surethere’s something to suit everyone’s schedule. But we need to hear from you –drop us a line if there’s something you’d like to do and let’s make it happen.Contact details are all on the back page.

All of our classes, workshops and events are open to the public – you don’t needto become a Member to take part. There are some perks to becoming a Member,such as advanced booking, social events, special offers and discounts; but ourdoors are open to everyone. We hope to see you soon!

You do not need to be a member to attend classes at the Centre,but if you are a member you benefit from reduced class fees and prioritybooking. We will also be announcing other benefits as the term progresses.

A class for those who are new to upholstery. Jacqueline will guideyou through the different techniques and equipment needed to complete a smaller project.Bring an item of furniture to work on! If you have tools, bring them. If not, you will be givenadvice about what you might need for the term and a limited number can be borrowedfrom the Centre. She has taught for many years at WaidAcademy and also here at Forgan Arts Centre. The Centre has a number of wheels and akiln. Students can work with clay either with or without using the wheel. Glazing and finishingthe pottery is all covered in the class. Clay incurs a small additional charge for each student.

Elsie is a Member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen and has many years of experience.Along with her husband, she has an established upholstery business and she has taughtat the Centre for over 20 years. These classes are suitable for various levels of ability andstudents work on their own piece of furniture while receiving individual instruction fromthe tutor. Some materials can be bought at the class as required.

Painting2.00pm – 4.00pm Full Price £120; Concs £100; Member £80Tutor: John JohnstoneJohn Johnstone was born in Forfar in 1941. He studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College ofArt 1959-64, and was highly commended. He received a major travelling scholarship to visitEuropean Capitals and was a part time lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art formany years. He has exhibited several times in London and he is a professional member of theSociety of Scottish Artists and Visual Arts Scotland.

Art for Beginners7.00pm – 9.00pm Full Price £120; Concs £100; Member £80Tutor: Gillian RobertsonThe class will start by looking at sketchbooks, why people keep them anddifferent easy ways of using them in order to record the world around andorder thoughts, colours etc. Students to have a small sketchbook (A5 as aguide) for the duration of the course and draw in regularly so they can figure out what excitesthem visually and will be able to work on pieces during the class from their own sketches ifappropriate. Gillian will also be looking at perspective, drawing in line with a pen (including blinddrawing), negative spaces, watercolours, and probably some basic printing techniques duringthe term. There is the opportunity to draw outwith the Centre at some point during the term.

Gillian has both a first class Degree with Honours and a Master of Design course in Illustration& Printmaking from Duncan of Jordanstone. She has been teaching at Dundee College forthe past 16 years.

Bring a sketchbook and pencil to the class. You will then be guided by Gillian about any othermaterials you might need.

Students will be introducedto a breadth of themes relevant to contemporary art practice. Delia Baillie is a lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and has astudio in Dundee. She has been a member of the Royal Scottish Academy since 2008.Recent projects include a 2-month artists residency at Halle 14 in Leipzig, Germany.

NEWStorytelling for the Curiousand TerrifiedFull Price £30; Concs £24; Member £21A three-week Short Course startingon Wed 4th February (see Timetable).

Tutor: Owen Pilgrim

Introduction to storytelling and story-making. For those whowant to find their storytelling voice or just learn a little more about storytelling, this courseis a gentle, fun, and interactive introduction to the craft of storytelling. Exploring basictechniques of storytelling and the ways in which a traditional tale can bear the teller’s style.With story-making activities to show how the elements of story may be created andunderstood.

Owen Pilgrim is a storyteller and artist, with a Bachelor of Fine Art, various trainings instorytelling, and a qualification as a Forest School leader. He has been a storyteller for over10 years and has performed for all ages and in many locations including festivals, libraries,schools, community centres, and many others including his favourite: in the forest. Owenhas a keen interest in the deeper meaning and significance of stories, their therapeutic andhealing aspects, their social purpose, and how they are relevant for us as individuals. Hehas developed storytelling workshops and projects and has been an organising memberof Blether Taygither, the Dundee Storytelling Group for the past 7 years.www.storypilgrim.co.uk

The realm of the mythological has much that can teach us about ourselves through theuse of metaphor, symbol, and archetypes. Myths can be seen as essentially maps thatcan be interpreted and followed to fabulous and revealing places. In this course we will betravelling deeply into a small bag of myths to see how the meaning contained within themcan be relevant and significant for our lives. The structure of the course will be basedaround teaching and discussion, with optional home study.

Felting7.00pm – 9.00pm Full Price £120; Concs £100; Member £80Tutor: Karen Caddell-Walker

To design and make a 40x40cm felt textile piece using wetfelting, needle felting, beading and embroidery. This can then bedeveloped into a cushion cover, wall-hanging, a framed pieceof art or something else. The choice is yours!

Starting with research and design development, please bringphotographs, magazine images, colours and thoughts on what youwould like to make. From here we will develop a shopping list so an ordercan be placed for all of you to be ready to start the following week. You will continue to worktowards a finished product and within this time including wet felting for half felt and full felt,needle felting and basic embroidery. All of these workshops will allow you to produce anitem to include in your design or an individual piece.

All materials costs are to be met by the student. This should be no more than£15 – £20 in total.

Working with the life model this class will introduce participants toboth traditional and more expressive approaches to life drawing.

Tutor: Liz Dulley

This class is suitable for all. Specially designed for improving painting skills,gaining confidence and finding out what you can really do withwatercolours! Whether it’s laying down washes, painting without a paintbrush or building uptexture. Liz offers tips, exciting techniques and advice using any water based media, tailoredto individual abilities. Students will bring along their preferred source material and have theopportunity to select and try the different techniques demonstrated while working on theirown painting. Includes – inks, watercolour bars, watercolour pencils

Liz enjoys working with watercolour, finding it an exciting and versatile medium. With adelicate approach, using unique spattering techniques, Liz creates intriguing watercolourpaintings succulent in texture, drawing inspiration from surrounding objects. Liz has beensuccessful to have work hung with The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolouron numerous occasions and is an Artist Member of Paisley Art Institute (PAI).

NEW Freestyle Create and Sew9.30am – 12.30pm Full Price £72; Concs £60; Member £48 A six-week Short Course.

Tutor: Jill SkulinaTextile mark-making and creative sewing. This course gives you the chance for some judgement-freeplaytime on a Friday morning – there are no such things as mistakes, just creative development.

Using a variety of techniques and materials, Jill will guide you through textile mark-making to createyour own bespoke fabric. You will then use this to make any garment, costume or soft furnishing thattime permits. All levels of sewing skills welcome. For those less confident with dressmaking andwishing to make a garment, Jill will guide you through marking up, cutting out and reading a paperpattern. This class is designed to be a relaxed and enjoyable way to release your creativity anddevelop your skills.

The class starts at 9.30am, but the Centre will be open at 9.00am, allowing you to come in if youarrive early. Have a cup of tea, a biscuit and a blether before we get started. You will need to bringmaterials with you each week – this list of inexpensive, mostly household items is available upon en-quiry, and is also given on our website.

SoundJourney™with FionaMcLarenSaturday 21st March, 10.30am – 4.00pm

The morning will comprise a 2.5-hour participatory workshop ina range of sound therapy techniques, including voice and the useof singing bowls. 1-hour break for lunch, bring to share if you wish.In the afternoon Fiona will lead us on a 2-hour SoundJourney™,also known as a ‘sound bath’. You will be immersed in a therapeuticwash of sound waves using gong, bells and drums and so much more,emerging amazingly relaxed and revitalised.

Initially trained in Shiatsu and then Reiki, Fiona qualified as a Sacred Sound therapist in 2005.This allowed Fiona to extend her practice from solely 1-2-1 clinical sessions to also workingwith groups. Fiona is a gifted and intuitive Sound Therapist. Fiona has work with a broadsection of individuals and groups around the country, has a couple of Sound Therapy CDs toher credit, The Heart of the Matter and Space Within, and also teaches djembe drummingfor beginners and leads a Kirkcaldy based djembe group, HeartSound.

Growing A Poem: aWild Walk and aWorkshopwith Simone Kenyon + Rebecca SharpSaturday 25th April, 10.00am – 5.00pmFull Price £60; Concs £55; Member £50

Using walking as reflective practice and a way to engage with yourenvironment, the morning session will be a 2-hour gentle walk led bySimone through a local woodland route, with stops along the way.We’ll begin the day with some gentle guided exercises to connectour minds with our bodies, which we may repeat along our walk.1-hour break for lunch and discussion – bring a packed-lunch andsomething to sit on. Break will take place either outside during ourwalk (weather permitting), or else returning to Forgan Arts Centre. Theafternoon session will be held indoors at Forgan – a poetry writingworkshop led by Rebecca, responding to observations and feelings generated by the walk,writing about the journey, plants, wildlife and elements encountered; working with a range ofimages, objects and other source materials that will be provided. Writing and general creativityexercises based on sense perception and awareness will provide stimuli for your work.

Be sure to leave your contact information at the time of booking so we can notifyyou of our meeting point and any other arrangements for the day.

We hope to gather a supportivegroup of complete beginners and advanced readersalike, whether you have a passing interest or keeninsight. It will be a relaxed, informal and friendly wayto explore the symbolism and associations of Tarot,compare different decks, explore spreads andtechniques, study card meanings and share ideas.

She will also introduce the wider contextof visual art and craft provision in Fife. Chance for discussion and Q&A.

There will also be the chance to find out in detail about the Spring programme at Forgan,as Coordinator Rebecca Sharp will be introducing some of the new features of the season.
