We’re delightedto offer a wide range of short courses, workshops and eventsfor the summer months, where we hope you’ll agree there’ssomething to suit everyone. The programme picks up in May,running through to the end of August and includes a range ofvisual art, crafts, creative writing, music, evening events andsocial gatherings. Choose from short summer courses,one-day workshops, taster sessions and events.

Brand new for the summer season is ourWalk-itoffer – taking advantage of the better weather(fingers crossed!), we’ll have a meeting point inNewport (see the end of the brochure for details),

from where you can walk to your class or workshop.A chance to add a little fresh air, exercise and socialisinginto your event. Look out for the Walk-it symbol throughoutthe programme.

Becoming aMemberYou don’t need to be a Member to attend classes, workshops or events at thecentre, however membership offers reduced fees throughout the year, early bookingand other seasonal offers. Our regular groups – Sewing Bee, Book Group and KnittingGroup – require membership.

Charcoal drawing with still-life. All materials supplied – no experience necessary. After herpopular workshop in April, Nichola is back with a short course to explore charcoal effectsand artistry. Beginners welcome! Nichola graduated in Fine Art from Duncan of JordanstoneCollege of Art and Design in 2007 and won the John Kinross Scholarship from the RoyalScottish Academy, allowing her to study in Florence. Following the success of ‘Creative Your Life!’ last Autumn, Carol is back with a Summerversion of activities and Shamanism to explore Creativity through the symbol of the Sun.The creative spark is known as the Muse. To follow our creativity we need to get in touchwith our inner sunshine and find some ways to get expression flowing. This 5-week courseteaches ways to encourage the light inside each of us to shine and incorporates a differentmethod of communication and expression each week to develop the theme and get clearabout the calling and direction of our creativity. You will be drawing, creating with nature,writing, constellating and drumming. Designed to inspire and revive!

Her work often includes embroidering onto the finished silk. The ideal class for a complete beginner, Adela will guide youthrough all of the different stages of lino-cutting. You will be able to design, draw andtransfer your image to lino, then cut and print your own finished work. You will leave withlots of knowledge of lino-cutting, as well as a beautiful and completely original colouredprint. They also make stunning gifts or cards.

This day-workshop is good for those wanting to try out Shamanism and good too if youhave been working with Shamanism for a while and would like to explore the significance ofthe tree. It is also brilliant if you just love trees and want to find out why! The tree is central inShamanic traditions, it is also an important guardian of the earth and a great symbol andpower to work with when we are looking for ways to activate our creativity. We will befocusing on the oak – Carol will bring in lots of material to teach the language of trees andhow they have been worked with through different traditions. Then we will take a trip intothe ways of the tree through Shamanic journeying and constellation work. The afternoonwill be a creative collaborative project bringing the communication system of the tree to lifethrough writing and multi-media.

Through line, blots, drops, spattering and fun techniques, Liz will guideyou through this exciting workshop to capture the feeling of chosenplant material using marks and colour. You will have the opportunity to explore your individualresponse to subject and create a unique representation. Please bring the following:One or more water-based medium for example – watercolours, inks, acrylics, pencils, bars,crayons. Brushes – include a rigger brush if you have one. Tissues and masking tape. Pencil,soft graphite – 3B, 2B or B, putty rubber. Cartridge and watercolour paper 300g/140lbs.

Plant material and photographs that inspire you. Sketches of plant life if you have some.A variety of plant material will be provided and there will be an opportunity to use watersoluble wax bars. In her second Summer workshop using watercolour paints, Liz willdemonstrate and guide you through exciting techniques to buildup texture, including spattering, diffusing and printing.

You will have the opportunity to choose your own subject, experiment, explore and create aunique landscape painting, succulent in texture. Please bring the following: One or morewater-based medium, for example – Watercolours, inks, acrylics. Soft pencil – 3B, 2B or B,putty rubber. Masking tape. Brushes – a mixture – soft, hard, thick or fine. Sponge ortoothbrush. Watercolour paper at least 300g/140lbs. Tissues or toilet roll or kitchen roll.A variety of landscape photographs no larger than 7 x 5'', for example – beach, buildings,forest, mountains. There will be a variety of mark making tools and mediums available to useon the day and some papers may be purchased for a small additional charge. A demonstration and taster-session with Rebecca Sharp, who hasplayed the clarsach (Celtic / folk / lever harp) for over twenty years,including composing, performing and teaching. One large 33-stringclarsach and two smaller lap-harps will be available to use.No previous experience or musical knowledge required! Rebecca will give a brief historyof the clarsach, the technical features of the instrument and how it has developed acrosscultures, playing a range of music for you to hear. You will have the chance to try the harps,having a short lesson within the time. Adults and older children welcome: younger childrenmay prefer the Harp Day for Littler Fingers.

Explore this fascinating technique to make creative prints.In this workshop, you will set up a ‘sun trail’ box outside,to track the sun’s movement, before developing unique printswith found objects. The session will include a short local walkto gather materials (eg. feathers, leaves – alternatively, objectswill be provided if the weather is prohibitive), and a short breakfor refreshments. Wear comfortable clothes and footwear for a walk, and bring any objectsyou might want to use for your prints.

Sylvia Troon taught art in schools, and then went on to be a puppeteer for many years.She is now a professional storyteller, often using puppetry to enhance her stories – andthroughout her career, she has been running puppet-making workshops for children andadults. Each session consists of a demonstration on how to make stories come alive witha characterful puppet which moves expressively. Everyone will then make a rod puppet.The final part of the day consists of playing around with ideas for storytelling with apuppet. Bring a packed lunch. Will include an outdoor break, weather permitting.

WALK-ITIf you see aWalk-it symbol next to a workshop or event, you can join usfor a gentle walk before and after your activity. The meeting point is: the

entrance to Tayfield on High Road, Newport, near Trinity Church. If you wish,please register for each walk at the same time as you book your event, and you’ll benotified of your meeting time.

Private HireForgan is available for hire for workshops, rehearsals, meetings and events. We havea range of rooms to choose from – two very large, one smaller; all well-equipped andspacious with excellent natural light. Please enquire at any time, or to arrange a visit.Hire charge is £15 per hour.
