Thereʼs no question that investment inyour staff at every stage of their career is the best way to grow your business, and increase employee performance, satisfaction, and retention. However, it canbe challenging to find educational programs that deliver an immediate return onwhat can be a significant investment. This is what distinguishes NAWLAʼs education programs from those that span

CHANGING THE WAY AMERICA BUILDS

SLB-USDA Identify Shared Priorities for Joint Efforts

The Softwood Lumber Board (SLB) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture(USDA) are moving aggressively to implement a Memorandum of Understand-ing (MOU) signed in April this year by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack andSLB Chairman Marc Brinkmeyer. The MOU established a partnership agree-ment between the SLB and USDA to change the way America builds, emphasiz-ing research and development in wood building product applications, expandingthe use of wood in the built environment, reducing greenhouse gas emissionsfrom the construction sector, and creating jobs in rural communities.USDA has established an inter-agency team to bring together the breadth of

USDA talent and resources focused on wood building products across the De-partment. The SLB met recently with USDA team leaders to identify specific

Insights and trends in sustainable design shared by the American Wood Council

Everyone in the building industry is aware of the increasedattention to how construction materials impact the environ-ment, from concept to completion, and even beyond. Simi-lar to the way consumers demand to know the ingredientsin their food and where they come from, people want toknow what materials are used in building construction andthe potential impact they have on the world around them. Tothis effect, wood is an ideal building material due to its vastabundance, renewable qualities, low environmental impacts, and its ability togrow naturally and sequester carbon. Fact is, wood buildings require less energyto build and operate, and simultaneously help to combat air pollution, ozone de-

Oldtown, ID—Tri-Pro Forest Products, based here, manufactures specialtyWestern Red Cedar and Douglas Fir, products at their facility here, as well as

Orofino. The company continuesto provide consistent high-qualityspecialty products to whole-salers and wholesale distribu-tors, who in turn sell to the retailyards (both independent andlarge box stores) and contractoryards. Their products are mar-keted in every state in the union, along with Canada and Mexico.Tri-Pro Forest Products opera-

tion in Oldtown includes a resawand board break down facility, automatic stickering machine, 10dry kilns with 70,000-board-footcapacity each, a resaw/planerline, two resaws, two additionalplaner lines and covered storagecomprising approximately100,000 square feet.

Key personnel at Tri-Pro in-clude: Operations Manager Ron

Cluster, Sales ManagerTerry Baker, Sales Rep-resentative LanceHubener, Plant ManagerMike Davis, Office Ad-ministrator KarenPhillips and Administra-tive Assistant LaurieClark.“Tri-Pro has been a

Cedar operation fromthe beginning makinghigh-end specialty prod-ucts,” said Ron Cluster.“In 1987, we started the

Cedar programout of Dover,Idaho. We wentfrom there toSpokane Indus-trial Park, andthen in ʼ96 webought the facilityweʼre at right nowin Oldtown.Thereʼs been a fa-cility at this millsite since the turnof the century. Weactually have pic-tures of a millhere in 1909.”Cluster contin-

ued, “We call ourmill the sawmill, but thereʼs a quad saw, band saws that break down cants, andthereʼs also a 5-foot horizontal band saw. We have a big J-bar sorter where wegrade and sort, and then the lumber goes to the kilns. There are two production

planing buildings on-site. In planer building1 a Stetson Ross614, a 20 knife planeris where all of thedecking and fasciaitems are manufac-tured. In planer build-ing 2 is where all thesiding is done, includ-ing the bevels, chan-nels, tongue andgroove and any otherspecialty items. Wealso have an area wecall planer 3 and thatis a 10-foot andshorter planing andtrimmer systemwhere we make ourhome center 1x2 and2x2ʼs.”

The Orofino sawmill, which specializes in Western Red Cedar and Douglas Firproduction, was purchased in 2007. Cluster said that operation has under-gone renovations with new equipment installations. “We are completing anew hog system, which should help production overall. There are some oldsystems where thebark conveyorswere going under-neath the bandmills and theywould plug up andinterfere with pro-duction, so wewere having down-time.”He continued,

“Weʼre fixing thoseissues and weʼre

cutting our Cedar andDouglas Fir and trans-porting it to the Oldtownfacility to be dried andplaned, which adds valueto the end product for ourcustomers.”

He continued, “Indi-rectly our products aregoing into the contractoryards, retail yards andhome centers,” Clustersaid.Tri-Proʼs products are

offered in full units andhalf packs. “We ship ourproducts all over the country,” Cluster offered. “We contract carriers to move ourproducts. We do not own any trucks.”

The company is capable of doing many different patterns. “We are running spe-cialized patterns with Douglas Fir. There has been quite a bit of demand forboard and batten during the last 14 months and thereʼs a much larger demand on10 and 12-foot in the wides than there has been in the past. Thatʼs conducive tothe board and bat-ten programs.”Tri-Pro purchases

Cedar from outsidesources as well. “Wekeep things supple-mented. In thesawmill itʼs a lottougher to manufac-ture a lot of differentitems than it is in aremanufacturingplant,” he explained.“So if the sawmill ismaking one size di-mension and youcan buy dimensionin different sizes onthe outside, thatʼswhat we do to keep things in stock.”

Great People.Great Facilites.Great Solutions.Great Pine.

West Coast Business TrendsBy Wayne MillerExecutive Editor

Most people know that it isnʼt cheap to live on the WestCoast. In fact, eight of the 20 most expensive cities in thecountry/region are located there. They include Vancouver, BC,median priced detached home: $2.23 million; San Francisco, average price: approximately $1 million; Los Angeles, averageprice: $539,600 (and 7.9 percent of homes have a negativeequity); San Diego, median price: $506,500. Other West

Coast cities on the most expensive home list include Seattle, San Jose and Or-ange County, CA.Currently, buyers from China dominate the luxury segment of Vancouverʼs red

hot housing market, according to the Vancouver Sun newspaper, which reportedthat 70 percent of high-end Vancouver homes are purchased by mainland Chi-nese for more than $3 million a pop. How all of this information directly affects thewood industry is not detailed here. However, it is safe to say that the more priceycustom/spec homes are where a lot of clear and upper grade material has beenand continues to go. Kent Beveridge, Skana Forest Products, Richmond, BC, said, “Chinaʼs wooddemand issues are controlling the market. When they stop or slow down buying,a lot more wood is put into our domestic markets, which softens the market andis detrimental to prices. “It seems to us that the U.S. economy is slowly improving and this is a positive.

Up to now we have had few issues with supply with the exception of clear Cedar, which is in tight supply. Buyers are watching inventories closely due to unseason-able ups and downs.”

Midwest Business Trends

Continued on page 37

In the May/June issue of The Softwood Buyer, the activity inthe Midwest was reported as “stagnant.” Since then, the mar-ket has reportedly picked up marginally for some. One lumbersource in Kansas noted the market is up 10 percent for hiscompany. But the general consensus seems to be that it couldbe better.

Another Kansas source, which sells to manufacturers and retail yards, said thatsales of Ponderosa Pine were doing well, but he thought poor sales of certainSoftwoods, such as SPF, were pulling it down. “Things have been pretty soft andinactive,” he said, adding that the market is worse than it was six months ago. One reason for the poorer market has been the poor weather. Parts of the Mid-

west have experienced record rainfalls over the last several months. Illinois hadits wettest June on record, for example, according to the stateʼs climatologist. Asa result, thereʼs more supply than there is demand since wet weather jeopardizedhome construction in the area. “Houses that should be framed in are just now getting the foundations done be-

cause of all the rain that weʼve had,” said one source in Iowa that sells largely tocontractors and do-it-yourselfers, adding that inventory is backed up because ofit. The economy in some areas of the region is also playing a factor in the lack of

growth, with a few contacts specifically pointing out the oil-rich Dakotas, whichhave had to deal with the slump in oil prices. “I would say six months ago, peoplefelt like the economy was turning around and demand would be higher for lumber

than what it is today. Sawmills rampedup production in hopes that the de-mand would be there, and it really hasnot come,” noted a South Dakota lum-ber source.Another Midwest source called the

market “volatile and prices are jump-ing up and down all the time. Stabilityis what we need.”Challenges in the export market is

another issue affecting the industry.“Exporting has been way, way down.China and Pakistan and other coun-tries that were buying Canadian lum-ber havenʼt been,” said the SouthDakota contact. He added that thestronger dollar has slowed U.S. lum-ber and log exports, and this has re-sulted in Canadian supply beingdirected towards the U.S. markets.Still, despite a wish for more activity,

there is a sense of optimism. “Hard topinpoint when, but things are going toturn around and get better at somepoint,” said an Oklahoma contact whomarkets Southern Yellow Pine, Dou-glas Fir, and Ponderosa Pine. “Our market is not really robust, but

itʼs not bad either,” he added. “Wehave peaks and valleys in our orders. Most of the markets we deal with, which include retail lumberyards want-ing boards, were on a downward slidefor 24 weeks in a row, starting aboutThanksgiving last year, and about sixweeks ago, it bottomed out andstarted turning around. Now the mar-ket seems to be topping out and turn-ing in a positive direction.” n
