FORENSICS AT LOCKERBY COMPOSITE

This week students in our grade 12 forensics class visited Laurentian University’s Department of Forensic Biology. There, students met with forensic experts and worked in one of the University’s new laboratories. The class extracted their own DNA and were able to take it with them in a fancy necklace! Then, Dr. Scott Fairgrieve shared some case work with the group, and together they proposed key questions and procedures for examining human remains. Students were able to deduce the manner of death using physical evidence on skeletal remains. This experience was interesting for students pursuing careers in forensics, policing, law, and even kinesiology. CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES! On behalf of the staff, students, and the entire Vikings community at Lockerby Composite, a big congratulations goes out to the graduating class of 2019!

LOCKERBY PRIDE!

On Friday at lunch, the Lockerby GSA hosted a special guest speaker as part of our Pride Week celebrations. Kyle, who is part of the Laurentian University GSA, shared his transition journey with us. This can be a very challenging time in a person's life but Kyle's story helped to show us that having the support from loving friends and family who accept you for who you are can make all the difference. Kyle left the Vikings with some advice: celebrate the little things- remember the things that make you happy and that feel good so that you can think back to them when you need a boost.

MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE Lockerby would like to congratulate Miranda D. on the achievement of her Masters of Architecture as McEwen celebrates its first graduating class. Miranda is a former Lockerby graduate who was among the first (of many since) to be accepted into the McEwen School of Architecture. Always generous with her time, Miranda has kindly visited Lockerby Composite over the last few years to share her experiences with current LCS architecture students. Congratulations Miranda and best wishes for your future! Read the whole story from Sudbury.com here:

VISUAL ART Lockerby Composite’s visual art students have been working diligently over the last couple of weeks to plan their culminating masterpieces. After brainstorming, planning, and sketching ideas, students are now getting down to business with final artworks. Grade nines are working on plaster masks, grade tens are working in artworks in the style of Canada’s own Group of Seven, and grade elevens are working on individualized artworks determined by independent proposals. Stay tuned for a wide variety of projects displayed in our school, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for new beautification installments in the hallways. Way to go Lockerby artists!

FLIPPING SUDBURY!

By Brooke A.: In Architecture this semester the class was given an assignment to ‘Flip Sudbury.’ Our task was to ‘buy’ a house that is located in the city, and renovate its exterior, interior, and landscape using a fictional budget of $175,000. I was excited to begin this project since it was something that interested me, and allowed me to broadcast my creativity and design skills. I got to use different programs to achieve my final results, and I am proud of how it turned out.

FANTASTIC AT FUSION BOARDGAMES NIGHT!

Grade 10 student Anthony D. took his final culminating activity to a whole new level this week. After finding plans for this vise online, he modeled the components using Fusion 360 and then assembled it using the same software. Not stopping there, he decided he wanted to animate it as well. After some experimentation, he got it working. The next step? 3-D printing! Click here to see an animation of his modeled vise.

STUDENT SERVICES

Grade 12s University Programs - Still Available To Students Are you an Ontario high school student who still has not received an offer of admission? Starting on June 6th, 2019 you can use the AIS to find possible openings at Ontario universities. Learn more at www.ouac.on.ca/ais. Students can also contact the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre at 519-823-1063 or [email protected]. Completion of Timetables for University It is important for any university bound student to know that when you receive your codes to prepare your timetable, act promptly and make your decisions. Otherwise, students could end up with leftover courses and an undesirable timetable. Additionally, students should take advantage of all the workshops offered for note taking, study skills, reading, etc. Students are easily overwhelmed by the amount of professional reading expected and workshops provide a smoother transition as students move from high school to university. Deposits For Post Secondary Programs (College & University) Graduates are reminded to ensure that they have processed deposits for their chosen program. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the school’s admissions department. Scholarships Knights and Ladies of Kaleva Guidance has received this year’s application for the Knights and Ladies of Kaleva Scholarship. This scholarship provides opportunities for students of Finnish heritage. Visit our school’s website or see a Guidance counsellor for additional information or an application form. Summer School Co-op Students will be able to obtain one, two, or three new co-operative education credits through work placements this summer. The work placements must be linked to courses students have already completed. Please see a guidance counsellor for application forms. Summer Camp Architecture and Design For the second year, the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism, Carleton University in Ottawa is excited to offer the summer studio, Imagine Architecture, for students in grades 10 - 12. Imagine Architecture has been designed as a career exploratory program for students wanting to build skills in creative design thinking and explore the artistic culture of design studio, which is at the core of any architectural studies curriculum. Please contact Mawuena Torkornoo via email [email protected] or phone: 613-520-2600 x6022 with any questions.
