the international Baccalaureate (iB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) is organized into six different themes that guide our studies: Who We are, how We express ourselves, how We organize ourselves, how the World Works, Sharing the Planet, and Where We are in Place and time.

i invite you to join me as we travel through time to examine the theme “Where We are in Place and time”. this ride will take us to the past, bring us to the present, and give us a glimpse into the future. this reflection includes our history, the exploration and discoveries made, the relationships cultivated between individuals and the connections forged between cultures, from local and global perspectives.

hIsTORy: WIThOuT hIsTORy, ThEREWOulD BE nO fuTuRE.

eaBh was found in an opportune time. it emerged from the fusion of three key aims: the need for college preparatory education in english, a mission to influence moral values through religious study, and the desire of parents and community leaders to provide continuous education for expatriate-americans.

this is the basis of how many international schools were created. today, international schools are not much different. the needs are unchanged, but the way we meet those needs has transformed as our environment has metamorphosed over time.

our big world has become smaller through globalization. today’s need for college preparatory education in multiple languages, a mission to influence values through a multicultural perspective of character education, and a desire from community members to provide high quality international education for local and transient international families are the synthesis of why and how eaBh continues to operate.

this is the foundation that is essential to our international families living in a globalized world. the demand for this quality education only continues to grow.

TODAy: ThE fuTuRE sTARTs TODAy,nOT TOMORROW.

as in the past, we continue to be dependent on the vision and dedication of the parent- and teacher-leaders, despite challenging conditions, limited resources, and facilities in need of expansion. it is through noble purpose, risk-taking courage, and passion that great initiatives flourish. and it is this process of transforming from organizational vulnerability to organizational sustainability for fifty-nine years that has made eaBh different from the rest.

eaBh has not only endured, but it has prevailed over half a century. it is now the leading international educational institution in Minas gerais, as the first and only iB World School. it is also one of only two schools in all of Brazil to offer the iB continuous program with both the PYP and MYP. Staff members are recognized by international qualifications and honors, and students become recipients of university admissions and scholarships.

it’s worth noting and celebrating, and then teaching our students, the impact of perseverance, collaboration, and leadership.

next school year, eaBh will celebrate 60 years, an incredible milestone.

We’ve made it this far because of the great contributing stakeholders that invested in the future of eaBh - the school that you and i relish today. the helping hands of the past have put the school on a successful trajectory to today. and just like the hands of a clock, we must keep this path perpetual.

the continued longevity of our school is dependent on our stakeholders, our school leaders, and donors making an ongoing commitment to building the school and its brand, thus supporting its constant evolution to meet the rapidly changing demands for how a school should function.

in the 2016-2017 school year calendar, you’ll see that we have marked a special week for grand celebrations to commemorate our 60th anniversary. the following is a glimpse of what we are planning.

november 22 – gala Dinner at the Cine theatro Brasil Vallourec featuring dining, dancing, and networking to celebrate our milestone.

november 23-27 – an opportunity to travel to hotel transámerica Comandatuba, an exclusive trip for eaBh members and their families. thanksgiving would be celebrated on the island, on november 24.

these events are being organized and supported by Cine theatro Brasil Vallourec and Belvitur Viagens. More details regarding these and other events will be shared soon.

i’d like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your ongoing engagement and commitment, and for being a part of our EABHConnection. We have coined the term eaBhConnection to capture the sum of our experiences at school. it’s hard to describe in words, but it’s a prevalent feeling, a permeating spirit, and a lasting impression that connects us together and is shared by all who are fortunate to be a part of this school community.

the upcoming eaBh annual report will showcase the major achievements and progress made during the 2015-2016 school year, and the following pages of the FYi highlights special moments of our everyday lives - the achievements of our students, the hard work of our teachers and staff, and the constant support of our parent association.

O PYP, um dos programas do Bacharelado Internacional (IB), é organizado em seis diferentes temas que guiam nossos estudos: Quem somos (Who We Are), Como nos expressamos (How We Express Ourselves), Como nos organizamos (How We Organize Ourselves), Como o mundo funciona (How the World Works), Compartilhando o planeta (Sharing the Planet) e Onde estamos no tempo e no espaço (Where We are in Place and Time).

Eu os convido a se juntarem a mim em uma viagem pelo tempo para analisar o tema “Onde estamos no tempo e no espaço”. Esse passeio nos levará ao passado, nos trará ao presente e nos dará uma rápida visão do futuro. Essa reflexão inclui nossa história, a exploração e as descobertas feitas, os relacionamentos cultivados entre indivíduos e as conexões moldadas entre culturas, por meio de perspectivas locais e globais.

A EABH foi fundada em um momento oportuno. Ela surgiu da fusão de três principais objetivos: a necessidade de uma preparação para a universidade em inglês, a missão de influenciar valores morais, por meio de ensino religioso, e o desejo de pais e líderes de uma comunidade que fornecesse educação para expatriados americanos.

Essa é a base de criação da maioria das escolas internacionais. Hoje, escolas internacionais não são muito diferentes. As necessidades são as mesmas, mas a maneira de satisfazê-las mudou, enquanto nosso ambiente se transformou ao longo do tempo.

Nosso grande mundo tem diminuído com a globalização. A necessidade de preparação para a universidade em diversas línguas, a missão de influenciar valores por meio de uma perspectiva multicultural da educação e o desejo de uma comunidade de fornecer uma educação internacional de alta qualidade para famílias locais e internacionais são a síntese de como e por que a EABH continua a funcionar.

Assim como no passado, continuamos dependentes da visão e dedicação de pais e professores líderes, apesar das condições desafiadoras, dos recursos limitados e das instalações com necessidade de serem expandidas. É por meio de uma proposta nobre, de coragem e paixão, que nascem grandes iniciativas. E é nesse processo de transformação de uma vulnerabilidade organizacional para uma sustentabilidade organizacional, durante 59 anos, que a EABH se mostrou diferente de todo o resto.

A EABH não apenas resistiu, mas prevaleceu por mais de meio século. É atualmente a instituição de ensino internacional líder em Minas Gerais, sendo a primeira e única Escola do Mundo do IB no estado. É também uma das duas escolas em todo o Brasil a oferecer o programa contínuo do IB, com o PYP e o MYP. Funcionários são reconhecidos por qualificações e honrarias internacionais, e alunos são admitidos em universidades no Brasil e no exterior e recebem bolsas de estudos.

É importante ressaltar e celebrar e, depois, ensinar nossos alunos sobre o impacto da perseverança, da colaboração e da liderança.

22 de novembro – Gala no Cine Theatro Brasil Vallourec, com jantar, dança e networking para celebrar nosso marco.

23 a 27 de novembro – Uma viagem exclusiva para a comunidade da EABH (EABH Family Trip) para o Hotel Transamérica Comandatuba, em uma ilha privada. Ação de Graças será celebrada no local, no dia 24 de novembro.

Esses eventos estão sendo organizados e apoiados pelo Cine Theatro Brasil Vallourec e pela Belvitur Viagens. Mais detalhes sobre eles e outros eventos serão compartilhados em breve.

Gostaria de aproveitar esta oportunidade para agradecer cada um de vocês pelo compromisso e por fazerem parte da EABHConnection. Cunhamos esse termo para capturar a soma de nossas experiências na escola. Students in grades Preschool to 5 presented artistic performances that brought many of us to tears. the early Childhood students performed songs from the Beatles and elementary students performed selections they had learned in music classes.

Alunos da Turma de 2 anos ao 5º ano fizeram apresentações artísticas que deixaram todos emocionados. As crianças da Educação Infantil se apresentaram com músicas dos Beatles, e os outros alunos mostraram o que aprenderam nas aulas de Música.

Parents had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the Brazilian Program. thays Silveira, the program coordinator, discussed how we conduct classes and assess the students, in addition to sharing Portuguese tests results.

What a wonderful day! Students and their families joined the school staff for a day of competitive fun that also served to highlight connection within our close-knit community. as usual, the school was divided into four teams, each one represented by a color and symbol: Yellow (sun), red (fire), Blue (water) and green (leaf). the teams competed in various games designed to earn points. Kids also enjoyed face painting and balloons. Congratulations to the red team, who won pizza for lunch!

Que dia incrível! Alunos e pais se uniram aos funcionários da escola em divertidas competições, que serviram também para mostrar a integração de nossa comunidade. Como de costume, a escola foi dividida em quarto times, cada um com uma cor e um símbolo: Amarelo (sol), Vermelho (fogo), Azul (água) e Verde (folha). As equipes competiram em diversos jogos. grade 2 students learned about Self-expression. as part of this unit, they wrote poems and created tie-dyed shirts. another 2nd grade unit that the entire school enjoys is the economy unit, during which students sell products and services to other students, teachers, and staff members in order to learn about making change and negotiating.

Os alunos do 2º ano aprenderam sobre autoexpressão. Como parte dessa unidade, eles escreveram poemas e criaram camisetas com tie-dye. Outra unidade que toda a escola adora é sobre Economia. Os alunos vendem produtos e serviços para outros alunos, professores e funcionários e assim aprendem sobre negociação e a dar troco.

Students in Kindergarten Blue and White learned about the different types of transportation. in arts, they reused materials in order to create cars, planes, trains, and other vehicles. they also simulated arriving at the airport and boarding a plane.

Os alunos do Kindergarten Blue e White aprenderam sobre os diferentes tipos de transporte. Nas aulas de Artes, reutilizaram materiais para criar carros, aviões, trens e outros veículos. Eles também simularam uma ida ao aeroporto e o embarque em um avião.

eaBh Director, Ms. Catarina Song Chen, was invited by the Lifetouch to participate in the Memory Mission. She spent a few days in the Dominican republic, accompanied by other Lifetouch employees and educators from the USa. She had the opportunity to meet, talk, and exchange ideas with locals. She also had the chance to help build a school for the community of Constanza. While she was there, and after she returned, Catarina had the opportunity to answer students’ questions and share her experience.

A diretora da EABH, Catarina Song Chen, foi convidada pela Lifetouch para participar da Memory Mission. Ela passou alguns dias na República Dominicana, acompanhada de outros membros da Lifetouch e educadores dos EUA. Catarina teve a oportunidade de conversar e trocar ideias com moradores locais e ajudou a construir uma escola na comunidade de Constanza. Enquanto estava lá, e mesmo depois de retornar, ela pôde responder a perguntas de nossos alunos e compartilhar sua experiência.

in March, american author Kathy erskine visited our school. She wrote the book Mockingbird, which is read by eaBh students. her visit was sponsored by the Pta. Kathy worked with parents, students, as well as other invited guests, in workshops about writing, together with our librarian and author in-residence, Kristy Dempsey.

Em março, a autora americana Kathy Erskine visitou nossa escola. Ela escreveu o livro “Passarinha”, que é lido pelos alunos da EABH. A visita da autora foi patrocinada pelo PTA. Kathy trabalhou em workshops sobre escrita com pais, alunos e convidados, acompanhada da nossa bibliotecária e autora, Kristy Dempsey.

We are so happy with eaBh’s results in the international League! the goal of the Math League is to promote the enjoyment and study of mathematics by organizing contests. the contests help to enrich mathematics programs. a total of 16 mathletes dedicate part of their lunchtime every week to develop their math skills. Under Mr. Leondaro Botaro’s leadership, eaBh students competed against other students from around the world and came in 9th place for grade 6, 6th place for grade 7, and three of our grade 8 students ranked in the top 30 in the world in their category. Congratulations to all!

Estamos muito felizes com os resultados da EABH na Liga Internacional. O objetivo da Math League é promover o gosto e o estudo da matemática por meio de campeonatos, enriquecendo o Programa de Matemática. Um total de 16 alunos dedica parte do horário de almoço toda semana para desenvolver suas habilidades na disciplina. Eles são liderados pelo professor Léo Botaro e, sob sua liderança, a EABH ficou em 9º lugar geral no 6º ano, 6º lugar geral no 7º ano, e três alunos do 8º ano ficaram entre os 30 primeiros do mundo em sua categoria. Parabéns a todos!

the global issues network group has started a campaign to eliminate the use of plastic cups in our school. they have the school’s support and Pta has joined them in the project, designing personalized cups that were sold to the community. there is still a lot to do, but we are off to a great start!

O grupo do Global Issues Network começou uma campanha para eliminar o uso de copos de plástico na EABH. Eles têm o apoio da escola, e o PTA se juntou à causa, criando copos e canecas personalizados, que foram vendidos à comunidade. Ainda há muito o que fazer, mas eles já começaram bem!

the Kindergarten classes always invite members of the community to be mystery readers. Parents, teachers, students and staff choose books and tell stories to the students, but only after the students try to guess who the mystery guest is!

As turmas de Kindergarten sempre convidam membros da comunidade para serem “leitores misteriosos”. Pais, professores, alunos e funcionários escolhem um livro e contam histórias para os alunos, mas só depois que as crianças tentam adivinhar quem é o misterioso convidado!

MysTERy READERs

Students in grades 6 to 10 presented research projects in various topics related to science. this year’s event was held in the main building, where judges used rubrics with specific criteria to assess the science projects. Winners received a special medal and certificate in recognition of their creative work. Fun activities were also available for the younger students.

Alunos do 6º ano à 3ª série do Ensino Médio apresentaram diferentes projetos em várias categorias relacionadas às ciências. Neste ano, a feira aconteceu no prédio principal, onde jurados usaram critérios definidos previamente, para avaliar os trabalhos. Medalhas especiais e certificados foram entregues em reconhecimento à criatividade dos projetos. Atividades divertidas foram organizadas para os alunos mais novos.

each year this event gets bigger and better! More than 800 guests participated and enjoyed students’ presentations, book sales, and delicious food from 19 different countries. Some special moments were the two piñatas full of delicious candy, the Pta dances, and the raffle of various prizes. Students prepared beautiful surprises for their moms. the school sent home a special gift - an eco bag - for each mother.

Como de costume, os alunos prepararam surpresas para suas mães. A escola enviou para as casas dos alunos um presente especial para cada mãe, uma ecobag.

teachers anna Souza, Cláudia gomes, Mariana Freitas, and thays Silveira, along with Upper School Principal, Jason Baxley, participated in the iX Jornada de educação, with other teachers from schools in the association of american Schools in Brazil. this year, the event, which followed the theme of “Unity in Diversity”, took place in the american School of Campinas.

O Conselho de Escolas Internacionais (CIS) e outras instituições trouxeram à EABH mais de 50 universidades dos EUA, Canadá, Austrália e Suíça. Foram excelentes oportunidades para os alunos tirarem dúvidas e conhecerem melhor o que cada instituição tem a oferecer.

grade 5 is the last year of the Primary Years Programme (PYP). it is a time to celebrate and grow. in order to commemorate this important time of the students’ academic life, eaBh organized another Lock-in. Students had the chance to spend a night at the school, enjoying pizza, movies and games, as well as breakfast with their parents and an emotional video. this unforgettable experience was a great opportunity to bond the class and create great memories.

O 5º ano é o último do Primary Years Programme (PYP). É uma época de celebração e crescimento. Para comemorar essa etapa importante da vida acadêmica dos alunos, a EABH organizou mais um Lock-In. Os alunos tiveram a chance de passar uma noite muito divertida na escola, com direito a pizza, jogos e filme. Na manhã seguinte, eles tomaram café da manhã com seus pais e assistiram a um vídeo emocionante. Essa experiência inesquecível foi uma ótima oportunidade para a turma se unir e criar grandes memórias.

the nhS students developed many projects this semester. among these projects, they sold raffle tickets in order to raise funds and invest in the BraMUn trip; collected book donations for a local charity; promoted a Futsal tournament to raise funds for “Bom na Bola, Bom na Vida”; partnered with Student Council for a leadership project for students; and organized sports activities for teachers and students.

Os alunos da NHS desenvolveram diversos projetos neste semestre. Entre eles, venderam rifas para arrecadar fundos que foram investidos na viagem do BRAMUN; receberam doações de livros para uma creche; promoveram um torneio de Futsal para conseguir fundos para o projeto ‘Bom na Bola, Bom na Vida”; desenvolveram um projeto de liderança em parceria com o Grêmio Estudantil; organizaram um evento esportivo para professores e alunos.

in earth Science, students studied the different types of seismic waves and how earthquakes create them. additionally, they learned how cities located in earthquake zones construct buildings to withstand earthquakes and built their own constructions that were then tested in a special experiment created by the teacher, Mr. Dave ritchie.

Na matéria Ciências da Terra, os alunos estudaram sobre ondas sísmicas e como elas sãocriadas por terremotos. Além disso, aprenderam como as cidades que se encontram em zonas de terremotos constroem prédios que não caem com o balanço. Depoisdisso, os alunos construíram seus próprios modelos de prédios, que foram testados em um experimento criado pelo professor Dave.

every year our students participate in the Pi Day Challenge, celebrated on March 14 (3/14). once again, student nazareno C. memorized the most digits of pi. as a prize he got to throw a whipped cream pie at Mr. Leonardo Botaro, a teacher chosen by student vote.

Todo ano, nossos alunos participam do Desafio do Pi, comemorado no dia 14 de março (que em inglês fica 3/14). Mais uma vez, o aluno Nazareno C. foi quem memorizou mais números. Como prêmio, ele teve a chance de jogar uma torta na cara do professor Leonardo Botaro, escolhido por votação.

Festa Junina is a traditional party usually celebrated in the month of June. People dress in regional clothing, listen to typical music, and of course, eat delicious food. our students performed dances and then all the guests enjoyed games and a bingo with exciting prizes.

A Festa Junina da EABH é sempre um sucesso. Todos vêm fantasiados com roupas típicas e aproveitam a música e as comidas gostosas. Nossos alunos fizeram apresentações de dança e, depois, os presentes participaram de jogos e de um bingo com muitos prêmios.

Before our athletes go to the iSSL, the Student Council organizes Spirit Week. each day of the week is planned around a different theme and students use all their creativity to come to school wearing costumes.

Antes de nossos atletas viajarem para o ISSL, O Grêmio Estudantil organiza o Spirit Days. A cada dia, um tema é escolhido, e os alunos usam toda sua criatividade para virem à escola usando fantasias.

eaBh is very proud of its active Pta! the members were very involved throughout the whole year. they organized and sponsored events, workshops and other activities. apart from events like Carnaval, international Showcase and Festa Junina, the great highlights of the semester were the egg hunt and the talent Show. it is great to be able to count on parents who work and help towards our continuous improvement.

A EABH tem muito orgulho da participação ativa da Associação de Pais e Professores (PTA), cujos membros foram muito presentes durante todo o ano. Houve eventos, workshops e outras atividades patrocinadas e organizadas pelo PTA. Além do Carnaval, da Mostra Internacional e da Festa Junina, os grandes destaques do semestre foram a Caça aos Ovos e o Show de Talentos. É muito bom poder contar com pais trabalhando e ajudando a escola a melhorar sempre.

eaBh hosted a team from the Middle Years Programme of the international Baccalaureate. the visit served to evaluate our school’s implementation of the MYP and the team was impressed by the level of knowledge of the program held by parents, students, teachers and staff. as always, we strive to keep improving our program and practices. We would like to thank everyone involved in this process, as well as our self-study team leaders and our Upper School Principal and MYP Coordinator, Mr. Jason Baxley.

A EABH recebeu um time do Middle Years Programme do Bacharelado Internacional. Eles vieram avaliar nossa escola e saíram daqui impressionados pelo nível de conhecimento do programa, por parte de pais, alunos, professores e funcionários. Continuaremos trabalhando para buscar melhorias em nossos programas e práticas. Gostaríamos de agradecer a todos os envolvidos, principalmente o líder do processo de avaliação, o Coordenador do MYP, Jason Baxley.

Students in grades 11 and 12 visited inhotim. teachers edmar Silva, Dave ritchie, Celi Silva and thays Silveira, each one from a different subject, accompanied them, allowing a multidisciplinary work at one of the best museums of the world.

Alunos da 2ª e 3ª séries do EM visitaram o Inhotim. Os professores Celi Silva, David Ritchie, Edmar Silva e Thays Silveira, cada um de uma matéria diferente, acompanharam a visita, promovendo um olhar multidisciplinar em um dos melhores museus do mundo.

in an activity that combined two units (Journeys and Jobs) students visited Fazenda Santa helena. What a blast! the kids observed a variety of animals, such as sheep and cows, and saw horses being examined by a veterinarian. they also had the chance to milk a cow, ride horses, and experience the daily routine of a working farm. it was a meaningful learning experience that everyone enjoyed a lot.

Em uma atividade que combinou duas unidades (jornadas e profissões), os alunos visitaram a Fazenda Santa Helena. Eles se divertiram muito! As crianças observaram diferentes animais, como ovelhas e vacas, e ainda viram cavalos sendo examinados por uma veterinária. Eles também puderam tirar leite de uma vaca, andaram a cavalo e aproveitaram muitos outros momentos. Foi uma importante experiência de aprendizado que agradou a todos.
